‘NRA Republican’ Turns In His AR-15 After Uvalde Shooting | The Katie Phang Show

Richard Small has considered himself a devout NRA Republican who owns various firearms, but following the shooting in Uvalde, TX, he turned in his AR-15 and has pledged to speak up about gun violence. Small joins Katie Phang to share his story. New details surrounding the sequence of events during the shooting in Uvalde, TX are painting a much clearer picture of how law enforcement failed that day. NBC’s Ken Dilainian joins Katie Phang to share what he’s learned.

Small caliber, supersonic bullets do something unique when they hit the flesh of a living person. They create a shockwave that radiates some 8 inches from impact in all directions. This shockwave SHREDS the flesh of a small child no differently than pounding with a heavy meat tenderizer. This tissue cannot heal. Two or three shots can leave a child's body unrecognizable requiring DNA samples from the parents to Identify the shredded body. If you are confused by this, let me put it this way. >>> The bullets from the AR-15, when they hit living flesh, they turn YOUNG CHILDREN into CHEAP HAMBURGER. This is not an exaggeration. Kneejerk reactions are dangerous like this one. I will be keeping my AR-15 to fend off all the criminals and gangsters that the Democrats released early from prison. Glad to hear there's some hope. Living abroad has given me so much more perspective on how unhinged US gun culture is, both right and left. In Korea, you're only allowed rifles for hunting or specific sports teams. You can't store them at home. Your police department holds them for you until you want to take them out, specify the reason and where you're going. You have to be 20 to buy, pass background checks, psychological checks (can't be addicted to substances, have mental illness or epilepsy), and you have to renew your permit every three years to reconfirm. They're even debating an upper age limit because an elderly guy accidentally shot someone while hunting recently. Just one accidental shooting, that's all it took.

I tried to turn in an AR to the Sarasota PD 3 years ago. They had no idea what I was trying to do and wouldn’t take the gun. A deputy said someone in the department would just take it home with them

I applaud this Man, he is a man with conscience, who did the right thing. Thank you. The PEOPLE of this country need to come together to start taking first steps, even if our politicians won't. I'm a Republican, was a gun owner and I've fired an AR15, it's fun, but it can be used as a killing machine and shouldn't be sold to 18 year-old kids.

I salute you, Richard Small! I have been waiting for Republicans of goodwill to come to the obvious conclusion that owning a gun that was designed as a weapon of war is not a gun that any law-abiding citizen should need to keep in their gun collection. THANK YOU for you courage and commitment! You are the first Republican to make a move like this, and I take my hat off to you, sir! You are a true caring American!

Mr Small, thank you for turning in your AR15. Does anyone know what the surrendered weapons protocol is for police. For example, are these weapons destroyed, are these weapons added to the police department's arsenals, is the disposition of the weapon consistent in all police departments? I am not convinced these weapons do not find their way back into the hands of dubious owners. Are there any law enforcement agencies willing to comment here?

If there’s no official paperwork that it was submitted for destruction then more than likely it’s in someone else’s personal arsenal.

@@matthewmorel3758 It has been five days since I ask for law enforcement feedback on surrendered guns. There are no comments, so I am going to assume these weapons are being trafficked back into private ownership, or passed around to other police departments. It looks like "no good deed goes unpunished" for average Joe American. As much as it pains me to say this, gun owners should not surrender any weapons until there is local or federal accountability for these weapons.

I live very close to a sportsman club and they have a shooting range. When I hear shooting coming from there it is usually a semiautomatic weapon, or an AR 15. But where I live we're lucky to have 1 to two murders a year, and sometimes none. The last murders that we had here, was a result of two seperate black men from the cities that killed their white girlfriends, but not with a use of a gun either. My question is how many murders are done without a firearm?? Most of those mass shooters had mental problems. Taking guns away will not stop the use of a firearm, but the monitoring of the mentally unstable will.
