NPTE Practice Questions: SCI Functional Outcomes

In this video I answer a question from one of my students, who is studying for the NPTE. The question was: "What are some functional outcomes to expect in PT?"
How well do you understand SCI functional outcomes? Let's test your understanding in this excellent episode about SCI functional outcomes.
NPTE Practice Question:
Jax is being seen for a C7 ASIA B SCI. The patient has been participating in physical therapy for two months to address his functional limitations. Which of the following is the highest level of function the patient is MOST expected to achieve?
Answer Choices:
A. Independent wheelchair to bed slide board transfers
B. Modified independent rolling in bed
C. Independent with feeding
D. Independent wheelchair to the floor transfers
Do you think you know which answer is correct? Watch the video to find out.
If you get it wrong, don’t worry. Dr. Kyle Rice, better known as “Coach K” doesn’t just give you the answer -- he breaks down the question so you know how to eliminate answers before getting to the right one.

Hi, How would this patient be independent with feeding...? (answer C). Wouldn’t he be modified independent? I know it’s not the correct answer to the question, but I got confused with your explanation for option C.

I saw a guy with C6 SCI who could use a slide board transfer by externally rotating arms and hands to compensate for lack of tricep enervation

I always was taught that you need at least C6 intact to independently perform SB transfers using your reasoning

True they will be able to horizontal transfer with no slide board. But A is the best answer from all the other choice. D is not the best answer, as pt still needs assist from PT.
