Fun fact - in Novosibirsk subway announcer have a female voice. Except when train arrives to second track, then it male voice. That way even if you couldn't hear exact words, you could understand on which track train is coming.

The Tatra KT4 used to operate on the M17 line on the eastern side of Berlin in the past years as a fast connection between trainstations, subway stations and the S-Bahn. I loved to catch a ride on these every morning. Hate that they are gone in Berlin but its good that they start a second career !

Thanks for the great video and greetings from Prague. We've never been part of the USSR, but of course we share some of the Soviet transportation mindset heritage. Much of what's been mentioned in the video has also happened here, only years earlier. The good news is that the trend is reversible and there can indeed be a transit renaissance once the local government and public support gain a critical mass. When the Prague Metro was being built in the 1970s and 80s, tram lines in the city center were removed and branches that ran parallel to the metro were scheduled for removal as well. 40 years later, the first such branch is being restored and tram tracks are about to return to the Wenceslas Square and the central train station. Our understanding of urban mobility is different than it was in the 70s and I believe a positive shift can also happen in Novosibirsk and other Russian cities, even if constrained by budget and the perception of the car as a status symbol in all post-communist countries. Good luck!

I’m from St. Petersburg and it was fun watching this informative video about your home city, we share some commonalities in terms of metro and trams. Of course it is difficult to compare St. Petersburg to Novosibirsk simply due to the budget differences and size of city center/population, but we too have a decent amount of shitty rails and transport problems which feel like they could have been fixed a long time ago if it was profitable for them to do so (money seems to magically “disappear”.... you know what I’m talking about lol). So thanks for making this video, it would be also interesting to find out about your local natural areas of interest, perhaps a couple places that I could stay at when visiting Novosibirsk in the future. I currently live between Sarasota, Florida (USA) and St.Petersburg, Russia (my home town) between which I travel on a yearly basis since my family is semi-divided between the two sides of the world.

Hi! West Siberia is mostly plain steppe, so the biggest nature attraction of Novosibirskaya oblast' is Vasyugan Swamp, which is more an extreme off-road and survival experience rather than something to see. Everyone from the region goes to Altai mountains, that's our primary travel destination. Also if you're really into rails, there is one more interesting spot kzread.info/dash/bejne/k3mqtcuJfs7bpag.html

@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 Special thanks for Novosibirsk rail-system review of yours. Good job! I hope that by the end of 2022, streetcar rails will have been properly restored at least in the left bank area of the city. Well, speaking of Vasyugan wetlands, I have always thought that the most section of them lies farther north in Tomskaya oblast. So I would hardly recommend considering looking for them in Novosibirskaya oblast. Yet, Novosibirskaya oblast does have some natural attractions, such as waterfalls and picturesque minor ridges in the south-eastern part of it.

Thanks for making videos like this! I love trains, trams, metros, and Russia is super interesting to me. So naturally I love watching this video and the fact that it's a city (capital) in Siberia, made it much more interesting too! Now I can see a lil bit more of the lesser explored parts of Russia, which would've been otherwise hard to do, to visit IRL (which I still hope I can do one day!). Also, despite all the negatives of the Soviet government, they sure know how to design amazing metro/train stations! Oh, and I love the old-school but super durable red trams the most (especially from the way you talk about how seeing in the cold dark morning brightens your day).

Btw I am from Indonesia and I am interested if Russia try to move it's capital to central Eurasia? Because I see a lot of inequality in Siberia, especially Far East :( Looking at the geopolitics on where China become so strong, influential in Far East and demonstration of Far East Russians to have better economy makes me think that Russia should move it's capital. But of course, maybe a lot of Russians didn't support this even though there are a lot of cities in middle of Siberia that capable for becoming economy capital, such as Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, or even Vladivostok! Yeah, I hope Russia becoming a better country, had decentralized development and can keep it's sovereignity from foreign dominations. Hope you get 1 Million subscribes 👋😃

Thank you! 😃 I agree with you on the decentralization part, such a big country can’t be governed by one man from one place. But it really won’t have much sense to have the capital of Russia in Siberia, it is poorly communicated and harsh to live, and will probably forever remain that way. It honestly has little sense to have such big cities like Novosibirsk too, challenges of maintaining a megalopolis in Siberia aren’t really worth it, and modern siberian cities only grew up because of the lack of decentralization. There are so many dead rural localities in Siberia that were prosperous lands in the XIX century. Anyway, thank your for your feedback, I really appreciate it!

I thought Romanian secondary systems (Galati, Braila etc) were unkempt until I saw these. KT5s and Konstantinos 105ns obviously have the same design philosophy, even if more modern systems, namely add angled ends to a box on a pair of bogies. But if they work, why not. Great work. I rode the Metro over the river in Novosibirsk and found the covered bridge interesting. I also road the KMP5 tram in Krasnoyarsk, and I knew that was special too, but didn't know its history. I learned about that in the KMP5-specific video on this same channel.

Great video! The metro is very good, stations are much nicer than most found on European capital cities, very well done! Trains look simple yet effective and durable. The tram system is wonderful! Please, people of Novosibirsk keep and improve your tram system! in most cities in Europe, trams were torn to make way for automobile in the postwar. It was a tragic mistake, and will cost us a lot to revert and return the cities to the citizens. Porto has a few lines of historic trams, mostly built in the early XX century. They were kept running at the center of the city and most people love them. Some have more than 100 years of uninterrupted service.

12:14 In Amsterdam, you have doors only for boarding and for exit with thoses gates. And in the middle of each Tram there is a "service/info point" with a Conductor.

Porto Metro has nothing like that. It's called metro, but it,s more a glorified tram that runs partially on tunnels. Neither stations or cars have gates, peple buy tickets on the stations and bard the cars. teams randomly show up to check the tickets, but not often. Most people have the monthly pass anyway.

Yakima,Wa has a very interesting heritage streetcar, runs mostly on summer weekends. The fleet includes 2 Porto single-trucks, a third being restored, and 2 former Yakima Valley Transportation Co Brill Master Units. The two operable survivors of a fleet of three ordered in 1930. They have the third, but it was in the woods in Snoqualmie too long.

Seeing this, i'm happy to live in a city with an exeptionally well bus system. The buses are built by Mercedes and the few old ones left aren't much older than 15 years.

I immediately subscribed to your most interesting channel. The affection with which you talk of these marvels is palpable (especially this - your father working with them probably had some influence - and that of Omsk - people, find it and watch it!) BTW, it is surprising what continental climate (or, the other way around, oceanic one) can do - Novosibirsk is at the same latitude as Copenhagen.

@@RailwaysoftheWorld1 Yup, that's what continental climate all about - no oceans for thousands of kilometres in any direction. And, as you point out, the Gulf Stream / North Atlantic Current and returning cold water from Labrador Sea have great role - NYC is at the same(-ish) latitude as Naples, which is almost 10°C warmer.
