This performance blew me away the first time I heard it. That confidence, that sass, I don`t think I have ever seen that to this extent. Thanks for the link. Finished watching both artists videos for the first time. No doubt Faouzia's version was very powerful esp since it was only her while playing piano, so talented. On first listen I probably favor Novia's rendition mainly due to that extra grit, sass and texture I feel from her vocals. There's maybe a bit too much quivering in Faouzia's voice for my ear but that's just me. Who knows maybe my impression could change over time.

Well I'm glad you're being open-minded about it. I understand the bias, especially since you heard the cover first. Faouzia also sings with a lot of growls and grit on the regular, her vibrato may be an acquired taste for some but it's really one of her greatest assets because it comes from her Arabic background. She could also do better trills and transitions than anybody else. Like her registered transitions from head to chest voice or actually better than what novia was doing here. Because it's more like a yodel which is not as easy to do as smooth transitions. And she can do that for days. Just listen to all her stuff, she's really such a crazy, versatile and dynamic performer. Novia is a huge fan of hers.. I don't mean to trash novia, I like her too, but people need to give faouzia her props especially when somebody else is just doing a cover. So thank you for listening and forgiving faouzia some props as well and being open to liking her more over time..

@@torbjornlindholmes2401 Yeah Faouzia has a lot of vibrato and for some people it's too much. I think her newer music has less emphasis on the vibrato. I also think there's a bit of coldness to Faouzia's performance here, relative to her normal sound, perhaps due to nerves. This was from a few years ago when she first started performing. There's another great version that she has, an acoustic version, that's pre-recorded and in the comfort of her own home, so probably a bit warmer. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKyqttZ7Y7Kqops.html I like both versions but slightly prefer the live one just because of the piano playing. You can find a lot of grit and sass in Faouzia's performances, typically, so I might recommend checking out something like "How It All Works Out" - another masterpiece with her playing the piano - a "stripped" version but not live: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n66my5eJZNLIkdo.html

@@Rosannasfriend I also think the Novia version is great - she adds a lot of attitude and color to the song, and her finishing note is very nice. That said, I do think Faouzia's vocal flip is significantly better (dare I say perfect) and the big notes Faouzia does with ease and sustain compared to Novia who I think struggles a bit to get up there and no sustain really. And bigger picture, this song is pretty tame by Faouzia standards, and doesn't really show her true vocal prowess like many of her other songs do. Again though, props to Novia for a great cover.

Would you react to Indonesian ethnic music? sape, gamelan, Kolintang, angklung. There are so many ancient heritages of music in Indonesia. I’m a little disappointed to be honest with you. Faouzia is the original singer of the song. Novia has made it clear she’s a fan of Faouzia. And Faouzia is still the best singer of the song. She has at least two versions of it, the official which is more upbeat, and the stripped version which really highlight everything she can do with her voice. She’s a very unique artist who brings her Arabic style of melisma‘s and trills into her contemporary music. So I would rectify the mistake of asking “what is Faouzia“ by going into a rabbit hole of Faouzia‘s music and starting with her renditions of “this mountain“. You won’t regret it. she’s one of the best singers in all of music today, and I’m not exaggerating. One of the most unique ones. Until then, I’m not interested in watching you review a cover without knowing who she is. Sorry, but good luck in your rabbit hole!

I wouldn't be as harsh but I do agree that if a reactor doesn't know the original, they should just listen to both in the reaction and react to both, followed by some thoughts when comparing both versions. I think that would be a lot more interesting too - and a changeup from the standard 1-song and done reaction.

@@jeff.howard I have done it a few times but always worry that the reaction might get too long. It's not just doing a reaction and it's done, I do the video editing, metadata aka tagging and doing thumbnails. It's pretty time consuming, lot's of love and care goes into every reaction and post.;) I do like your suggestion and agree it's more interesting to compare both versions/artists. Thank you for the input.
