Novgorod The Great, Russia. Founded in 859. Father of Russia

Novgorod The Great (“Veliky Novgorod”, don’t mess with Nizny Novgorod) is one of the oldest Russian cities founded accoding to the first mention in the History at least at the 859 year. It is located along the Volkhov River which downsteam from Lake Ilmen.
The history of Russia started in Veliky Novgorod at 862 after it’s residents invited Rurik, the Scandinavian Varangian to manage their matters. Rurik laid the foundations of the future Russian statehood. The dynasty of Rurik ruled Russia for over 700 years after him, until in 16th century, the Romanovs came the Russian authority.
That’s what Novgorod The Great considered as the “Father of Russia”. Tsar Alexander II at the 1000’s year of Russia (1862) ordered to open The Monument to Millenium of Russia at the Kremlin of Novgorod The Great.

Sergey, thank you for the history and the great video. The way you tell us, the Slavs of Novgorod of that time governed themselves, democratically, exactly as the Slavs of Koroska, a previous region of Slovenia, which these days is the part of Austria. Keep up with great work. With love from a Slavic Canadian.

Greetings from a Russian teacher for you! I ought to recommend you to show for your students the film "Aleksander Nevsky (1938) - English Subtitles". It is available here on KZread. It was filmed in 1938, just three years before the German invasion in to Soviet Union (WW2). That film is full of the Russian native folk proverbs and sayings, it shows the real Russian native culture, dresses, mindset, military tactics & strategy, courage and the real Russian democracy base one thousand years ago. The Novgorod city People Gathering ("Народное Вече") is an example of the "Russian Truth" law-state, which can be put together in the line with the Greece ancient city democratic rules. People, who says, "Russia is a barbaric uncivilized state" must know: Russia was based on the democracy laws one thousand years ago. At least, in Novgorod the Great Free City. That film is long and old (filmed 80 years ago), but is a masterpiece even up to nowadays!

Sergey, that was overwhelmingly beautiful! Only in Russia do we see such beauty. Well, ok, there are some beautiful places throughout Europe, but Russia is unique. I could not help think when you were mentioning the Kremlin that so many American people still have it wrong. They think that there is only one Kremlin and that it is full of spies or something. No matter how much I tell them that Kremlin means Fortress and there are many throughout Russia, they insist on being incorrect and keeping their definition. Novgorod is stunning! Thank you for your videos Sergey without which we would never see such beauty in both Russia and her people. Yes, Classical music is to be discovered. I listen to it often. I recently got some Shostakovitch on vinyl, which I had not had before. I don't think I have any Rachmaninoff yet, but eventually I will find some. For some reason, I want it on vinyl. I like much Russian music, from classical to folk to rock. In fact, one of my top five favorite songs of all time is Kukushka by Kino. For me it is a recent discovery as of a few months ago and instantly made my top list.

@@user-yp4zk7ul7n Yes, that happens with music of the west too. I do like the acoustic version that the little girl sang on an episode of The Voice Russia though. (That was my discovery moment causing me to want to learn more and find the original version). It works in reverse as well sometimes. I'm ok with Metallica's song "Nothing Else Matters" (I'm not much for most of their other music), but then I heard it song partially in Russian on The Voice and thought it was the best version ever. Russian language is musical.

He was from the Romantic period of classical music. What a deep history of the lands that are now Russia. Looks like the Vikings were a big part of Russian history. Looking forward to more videos like this.
