I am Italian, there is no mistake, in many translations it is not possible to faithfully translate a text, therefore the text in Italian has been rewritten without distorting the original meaning of the work, in order to give the same meaning but with different metaphors . Each country has its own precise way of defining a certain event or mood. All this in compliance with the metric.

And only the Russians get stright to the point and all three men repid the same phrase at the end of their part with no methaphor at all😆 (they would all sell their souls to the devil for just one night with her), what I like most because it indicates best how all the men are exactly the same. In the polish version Frollo sees Esmeralda as the holy mother of god , with makes it both even more creepy and interesting. In the polish version they also pray to Notre Dame, so I gess the meaning is "holy Mary" as well.

Salut. JE trouve la version française bien plus puissante et touchante, et je suis italien, c'est pour dire. Mais je trouve que dans ma langue natale, ça passe moins bien, et puis justement, sans Garou, Lavoine Et Fiori, c'est pas vraiment pareil.

I don't think there is any "mistranslation" of the French lyrics, especially when Cocciante worked so closely with both the author of the French version (Plamondon) and the Italian one (Panella). In the French version Notre-Dame is used with a double meaning, indicating both the Church of Notre-Dame and the Virgin Mary, though I think the first meaning is prevalent; in the Italian they only kept the first meaning for metrical reasons. But I think they knew what they were doing, it wasn't a mistake.

Capisco che cosa intendi e mentre posso accettare questo discorso per la versione francese, nella quale obbiettivamente le due entità portano lo stesso nome, questa sovrapposizione si perde in italiano e il messaggio che passa è che questi tre elementi stiano pregando una chiesa....che è un luogo di culto, non esattamente un oggetto di culto. Per questo io parlo di una traduzione mal interpretata oppure, se intenzionale, di una traduzione mal fatta. Perché esiste anche questa possibilità. Personalmente, non sono una fan del libretto italiano (non che trovi quello francese particolarmente brillante, siamo lì), ma è anche vero che i miei standard sono abbastanza alti per quelli che sono i parametri accettati in ambito di adattamento.

Bisognerebbe capire in quale lingua l'opera sia stata scritta per prima, le altre sarebbero quindi traduzioni. Ovviamente, le traduzioni non possono ricalcare le parole dell'originale, quindi metafore e significati devono essere cambiati per mantenere il significato del discorso e la sua drammaticità.

I'm not Italian - but I am Romanian ..maybe that's why I understand a bit of the nuances of the language .. but in any case this version is still by far my favorite version of the show - the voices, their acting, their passion and simplicity is just incredible. It's a masterpiece !! And to think that most of the artists were not professional singers or well known actors, etc.

В целом неплохо, видно, что перевод на итальянский максимально близок к оригиналу, не то что русский, но всё равно французская - неповторимый оригинал!

Испанский вариант тоже максимально близок к оригиналу. Думаю, что на других языках тоже старались. И только у нас с подстрочника "переводил" кореец, вообще не знающий французкого. Это ж надо было так обос...ся

Мне русский вариант больше всего нравится, душевный, невероятно страстный и отчаянный...только в русском варианте отдают не жизнь, но и саму душу, вечность, когда покой не придет даже со смертью, больше отдать не возможно...И русский вариант больше передает об обстоятельствах истории описаной в романе. Русский вариант - это не перевод, это отдельный шедевр

Однако в воплощении сущности Феба произошло фиаско. Напрягает некое ощущение атеизма автора перевода( упустим ), но тембры исполнителей незабываемы.

With all respect and my personal love for italian language, it is not a good fit for the rhythm of this music. French has all accents on the last syllable, and Italian mostly does not. So it feels artificial and a poor match. I can't say about other translations as I did not hear them.

You're right, unfortunately the "poet" who did the italian localisation cared more about trying to get the original meaning without thinking that it would have to fit the music and be sung

True. I also noticed that the open (and long) vowels make it difficult to adapt to the rhythm of the melody. Just one short example is "belle" vs "bella".. Curious too the visual difference between the two Esmeraldas (presence vs attention-seeking), and the difference between the two priests (the French one is sober, in line with the style of the priests). I find the Russian version quite nice and curious (though have yet to see it all) - as one said they rewrote afresh taking into account the sense and context that Russians can get from it (imho the only right way), and for sure did not have problems with open vowels.

Il modo di esprimere i turbamenti non può prescindere dalle abitudini del ruolo, nonché dalla estrazione sociale. Solo nelle soap, zeppe di espressioni stereotipate, si trova una sintonia tra turbamenti interni e manifestazioni visive. Non siamo al circo, e lo stesso Cocciante, dato per scontato che ha collaborato nella regia della versione francese, non è amante delle interpretazioni circensi. Propendo per la superficialità unita alla mancanza di rispetto e voglia di strafare. Qui non è una questione di "de gustibus", bensì del travisare strafacendo.
