Notorious Shoaling on the Way from Wrightsville Beach, NC to South Carolina | ICW Series Ep 7

We leave Wrightsville Beach, NC with the intention of stopping in Southport but plans change and we end up traveling through one of the worst shoaling spots on the Intracoastal waterway at low tide!
We've created an ICW Planning Workbook to help you better plan your day-to-day travel on the ICW. Check it out here: abroadreachtravel.myshopify.c...

We have been full-time liveaboards since May 2020. We spent the first year and a half aboard a 1965 Alberg 30 that we have owned since 2010. We recently upgraded to a 1980 Tartan 37 named Acadia and we are so excited to continue our cruising journey! Be sure to SUBSCRIBE to see our journey!

Does your depth indicator show depth below the keel? At the shallowest point it still looked like you were still showing over 7 ft. Thanks for the video. I love the maps and place referencing.

It’s total depth so when it reads 4.5 we run aground. We’ve had it set up both ways and we both have found we like total depth better than depth below the keel. I was actually surprised we ended up with that much water especially since it was a lower than average tide and what the recent surveys looked like. It can still be a bit nerve wracking to only have 2.5 feet under the keel 😁

Yup! And we have what is considered a shoal draft sailboat! We know people who have done sections of the ICW with 7ft draft boats but it’s not recommended. I think the common rule of thumb is 6 feet, but you really have to play the tides in some places with that much!

Question: What is the tablet stand that you are using in the cockpit? It looks like a good one...

The tablet mount and leg parts are ram mount and they are attached using the mantus marine stainless rail clamps. They are both fantastic and put up with so much abuse. The ram mount can also be installed on a cabin top which is how we had it set up on our Alberg 30. We’ve been using the mount for a year and it still looks and works like brand new. It’s pricey but we HIGHLY recommend them!

Just once I left Carolina Beach and had the current with me through Snows Cut and also going downstream. Did you get stuck trying to go in to the pipeline canal?

I think having them both is one of those once in a lifetime kind of things 😂 . We didn’t get stuck we poked our nose in following the sonar charts and put it in reverse when we saw 5 feet. Didn’t run aground but the notes about someone hitting something hard on the starboard side of the channel had us a little too squeamish to poke around too much. It was also half tide so we we worried if we got in we wouldn’t be able to get back out 🤣

I know that you are limited traveling with someone, but do you ever consider sailing off shore?

We plan on doing a lot more outside travel moving forward. With our Alberg 30 it was easier to stay inside because weather windows we were comfortable with were so hard to come by we were usually making better time inside. As we came south this year we had already planned this whole ICW series and we wanted to travel with our friends so we stayed inside. The boat was also super new to us so we used it as a good shake down since we bought it 10 days before we started heading south. We are feeling much more confident with the Tartan now that we’ve got some miles under the keel (we are currently in the southern Bahamas) and we plan to do a lot more offshore when we head north later this year ☺️
