‘Nothing’: Maddow says Trump lawyers ‘didn’t bring it’ for Cohen cross-examination

“This is their defense. The cross-examination of Michael Cohen is the defense's case and…there was nothing,” says Rachel Maddow on the Trump lawyers questioning of Michael Cohen falling flat. Chris Hayes, Alex Wagner and Lawrence O’Donnell weigh in.

    LOL Trump wrote personal checks on a regular basis to Cohen for his retainer. Perfectly legal. Bragg has to prove that Trump not only didn't care if Melania and Baron found out, but he didn't want to protect his brand too. The FEC prosecuted John Edwards, a Presidential candidate, for the same thing. They lost the case. That's why the FEC didn't pursue this case. It's also why Bragg's predecessor didn't pursue the case.

    @@cherylmatthews5507 Yes, and they were all choices. Throughout his life and at any moment of his life Trump had a chance to be a decent person. It's not that he doesn't know right from wrong. It's just that he always "wrong". I read Robert Caro's multi-volume bio of LBJ. LBJ was not a nice guy. He treated people terribly including his wife and his most loyal staffers. Yet, Johnson knew poverty, personally, and knew first-hand the discrimination and racism Mexican-Americans and African-Americans endured. So, when he became president, he tried to ameliorate those conditions (Medicare, Voting Rights, aid to education, etc.). As Mr. Caro notes, "power reveals". In LBJ's case, he used his power to help people (which he had rarely done). In Trump's case he used his power to hurt people and divide the country while still enriching himself. Power revealed his evil nature.

    Fact: if this is the weakest case, then by definition the other three must be stronger, and the only reason the others haven't come to trial is because of delay, delay, delay tactics. Fact: Michael Cohen has served time for this crime, a crime in which Trump was referred to as the 'unindicted co-conspirator'. Justice will be done when both the fixer and master are dealt with. Fact: I am not a legal expert but your assertion that the Statute of Limitations applies doesn't hold muster. If it did, the defense would have presented that argument.

    As a former juror on a month long trial, for us as a jury, the biggest impact on information, was when we heard it for the first time. It was so clever for the prosecution to get ahead of what the defense will use as a rebuttal regarding Cohen. For us in our case, when the defense would say, hey but didn't you say???? We would think....yeah no new information here, they covered it yesterday.....next.

    I don't think it would be detrimental for Cohen to acknowledge his anger or its delivery in the public space. His life and his sense of self was ruined by Trump and his narcissist's manipulation. He should say he will spend a lifetime healing that trauma and this is a redemptive moment, despite not in spite of Trump.

    I love how Mr. O'Donnell weaves the story of how one behaves in the witness stand. Earlier today he said something close to this, "When a witness takes the stand, everything changes." Here is my experience as a parish pastor for 30 years now in a mainline Christian denomination that if you throw a rock at the corner of Main and First, you would at least hit the sidewalk of said church. Easter is full of joy and jokes! Holy Thursday and Good Friday are muted. Christmas is full of joy. A funeral for a 98 year old is usually fun (old people die and there are stories to be told...many are funny.). A funeral for a service member killed in combat is something completely different. A funeral for a 14 year old child is completely different. How I present myself to my congregation and those gathered does not change who I am, but the demeanor is essential. It seems that Cohen presented himself with the correct decorum. Today was not the time for jokes. Today was not the time for audacity or arrogance. Today was the time for truth telling and humility.

    An early indicator that the cross examination was not going to be very successful was when the defence attorney started by asking questions about personal grievances. Bad strategy from the outset and not very effective. Also congrats to Cohen about maintaining his composure so well.

  • @starfishsystems

    @starfishsystems

    15 күн бұрын

    I agree. For a cross examination to begin with a personal grievance - even a valid one - immediately creates an impression that the defense is not impartial. It seems not to the point, merely a petty and vindictive distraction. So now the jury is critically watching defense counsel, not the witness. It's not a good look for a defense trying to cast doubt on a witness. The only way this could conceivably work to the advantage of defense is if the defense is already established on unassailably high moral ground, such that the personal grievance is carried along with the general sense of moral outrage. But the opposite is true here in this courtroom.

    What threads? Trump wrote personal checks on a regular basis to Cohen for his retainer.
