Notes Sound Balance. Wolf Notes Explained. Guitar comparison.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, we are going to see a very important quality that a guitar should have. The sound balance of all the notes in all the registers of the guitar. Also, we talk about the famous Wolf Notes that can appear on a guitar. Wolf notes are one of the biggest headaches for guitar makers.
At the end of the video, we compare three guitars. Luciano Lovadina 2022, Antonio Marín Montero 1973, and a Chinese Factory Guitar.

Excelente, a veces nos perdemos apreciando las maderas y adornos y descuidamos lo más importante al probar una guitarra.

Excellent video, you are teaching those of us whom appreciate high end quality guitars the things we should be looking at and listening for when we try new guitars. Very much appreciated, I hope to go to Malaga within the next few years for vacation, and high on my list will be visiting a few luthier shops and bringing back my dream guitarra!!! Saludos!

Thanks for doing this assessment. Your approach to the guitar is very realistic and practical. One must always look at the overall character of the guitar, how it speaks, and can convey the musical sensibilities of the player.

You're welcome Dominelli. Actually I liked very much that of realistic & practical. It is one of the things I look for in my videos. specially coming from a guitar maker. Thanks!

Just like a golfers swing, in guitar building you need consistency. If a perfect guitar does exist, the builder not only was brilliant, but also lucky with the materials he chose and combined. But other factors include durability, time and the environment it exists in. Also like any tool, it’s application. It was once said that the great Julian Bream could make the cheapest pig of a guitar sound beautiful.

Thanks for this information. So well done! I'm hoping you can shed light on my situation... I have three steel string flat top guitars (not very high end-but not low end either). All of them have dead spots when certain notes/frequencies are played. I’ve already ruled out any possibility that the problem is caused by poor frets, strings, bridge, saddle, nut, setup, etc. From all the research I’ve done, the problem is a type of (unwanted) sympathetic resonance within the guitar itself. Mostly they appear on the D string, but the same problem occurs when the same note is played on the G, A or low E strings as well. The Attack is very pronounced, the sustain is almost non existent, and there is a noticeable “stunting/boxy” effect. I’m not very fussy about refined balance, but since I play fingerstyle, it’s very disturbing to me when a few notes sound (and feel) terrible. I love these guitars, but the problem makes me want to replace them. Do you have any suggestions for how to reduce the problem?

You're welcome Ron. Unfortunately this is a very difficult problem to solve. Because it is related to the construction of the guitar itself and the frequency the guitar is at. I have seen some guitar makers who have been able to vary this frequency by varying densities in the inner parts of the guitar and so on but very few do it and know how to do it without making the guitar lose quality. Have you tried changing the tuning? That is to say that instead of tuning the strings with A=440 you tune to 442 or 335 ... etc. Maybe doing that you can get a better result. But maybe not... Regards from Granada.

Is there any video/website with recorded data showing the time and frequency domain characteristics of each note, and perhaps for a wide range of guitars (I.e., cheap one to expensive one)? If anyone knows of such database, please let me know. And thanks for this video.

I have had a difficult time finding a guitar in my price range that does not have "wolftone" problems...The issue I have encountered is almost always the most noticeable when playing an E note on the second fret of the D string and the B note on the second fret of the A string. For me it is extremely distracting while playing. Thank you for bringing attention to this problem.

Thanks for your comment. That is strange. because in my experience wolf tones are located normally from 7 fret 1st string to 19th. But anyway, traditional guitars are in some way linked to always you find some notes not so well balanced with the others. Important is that are not so much noticeable. Many guitar makers and guitarists find this part of the instrument's idiosyncrasy.

Very nice vid. At around 10.10 you are talking about the C and C-sharp on the high E string . Is a wolf note (or kinda fast decay, like on my own guitar and prior guitars that I owned) on a C on the first E string something that is not a big problem, as this note is not played that often. A sevent fret (B) as a wolf note is a lot more problematic, right? .In my experience mostclassical guitars(fan bracing) has slightly uneven notes on the high E string especially, like 8 or 9th fret, and 13th 14th onwards, but often sound more sympathetic on the A or B. It varies how much you can hear this unevenness per individual guitar, but it is always there, even slightly. I also experienced the phenomenon on electric guitars, on slightly different parts of the guitar than a clasiccal, also certain bends can be better or worse (sustain wise) on different notes on an electric.

Yes, I also found often wolf notes on D# first string 11th fret. Apart of the ones you mentioned. I disagree with you that the C on first string is not a big problem. It is. At least in classical music repertoire is a very frequent note for playing. As you said in most guitars you find something. Very few guitars I found with no, let's say, weaker notes. But in case I need to deal with them I much prefer to find them above 12th fret. For example on 13th fret that is another usual spot to find them. Regards from Granada.

every guitar enhances certain notes/frequencies and has wolf tones - it's the special personality of this guitar. I have a (high quality) classical guitar, that is very even in all its notes, but is kind of a bit boring (for me at least)

Every classical (acoustic) guitar has wolf notes. Some have less than others. It's a single sound chamber, impossible to resonate at ALL frequencies.

Quite Agree. Let's say kind of impossible all notes resonate in the same way.

That’s why “silent” guitars are great: “wood” is not tuned to specific note; all notes are evenly balanced and “silent”; use amplifier for artificial reverb.
