Just recently discovered noteful, having the tool bar at the side is actually one of the reasons why i’m so eager on purchasing this one rather than other popular note taking apps!

I use layers extensively as an online private tutor. During a tutoring session, I will share my iPad screen and open up a PDF of the textbook in Noteful. While explaining concepts to the student, I can easily scribble on diagrams in the textbook. When I have more than one student using the same textbook each student can be assigned their own layer.

Noteful adding layers was a game changer for me. Being able to mark of PDF’s by adding a layer has been a huge help. I can now share the original PDF without including my markups.

Thank you so much! ❤I also have a question, when you are first using the free version of Noteful and you already made many notebooks and folders that have been written in and used, when u update to the pro version of Noteful will all the previous notes be gone or will they continue to stay?

I don’t why but when I write on pen and paper, I retain more information. I have the iPad Pro and I just use it for watching contents.

As usual, Ropsie, you nailed it! The lack of a more useful search function is the reason I cannot use Noteful. I hope I am wrong but I have a suspicion that the developers will add handwriting recognition but along with a subscription fee. Tell me I am wrong-I would welcome that. And I would welcome being wrong with my pessimistic view they will never improve the search functions.😮

@@kathrynlily That is correct. In order for that feature to be made available, a subscription fee would be needed. I bookmark or outline my notes. Or I just use a text box for searching. I don’t think Noteful really tries to compete with GoodNotes and Notability when you factor in features/costs. While some features are missing, the $5 one time fee is hard to beat when other apps are on subscription but still full of bugs.

@@jon5161 I have used Notability from 2012 on and I paid 99 cents for it. No subscription. I have followed Noteful's progress because of Ropsie's reviews, etc. and was hoping to use it some day. Maybe not.

@@jon5161 I have been using Notability since 2012 when I paid 99 cents for it. I still use it without a subscription and I have yet to find a bug, while others do report them. Noteful intrigued me because Ropsie has been a big advocate of it and so I tried it. Not for me just yet.

Yeah, the subscription is definitely tied to OCR in the app because the developers have said that they need to pay MyScript (Nebo developers) for the technology. Another alternative would be to wait until Apple makes it available for free to developers. You guys got the best out of Notability!

How to draw straight lines with pencil

Nice review! I’m now finding it hard to choose between Noteful and Noteshelf! I have been playing around with both and discovered that Noteshelf has a good Favourites tool which allows you to save up to 7 preset pens and colours. You can lock photos and text in Noteshelf, which you can’t do in Noteful but Noteful has does have Layers, which I find useful. I don’t find the pen tools very good in Noteful: they all seem to be the same. Maybe it’s because I don’t have an Apple pencil, just a cheap clone which doesn’t have pressure sensitivity. Could you do an update on Noteful 3 sometime maybe?

Ah, yes. Without the Apple Pencil 1 and 2, Noteful's handwriting is really terrible. We'll add Noteshelf 3 to our to-do for an update.

We still have to go through this, but off the top of my head; Apple Notes is quite good.
