Notched combination dies for the Say-Mak hammer

When I purchase the new Say-Mak power hammer, I also purchased several sets of dies. One set is a rather unusual set of combination dies that have a notch cut out of one corner of the bottom die.

    What an incredible hammer, the potential seems endless. I mean, stopping short of drop forging a crank shaft kind of endless. But within one man possibilities....endless. 😊

    I’ve got 2 sets of dues other than the standard flat dies. One for aggressive drawing out and one for Japanese style blades. This video is extremely helpful in helping understand how to start unlocking the potential of each set. The machine SP60 is really great and I enjoy mine. I’ve been meaning to ask Helmut what size stock this can handle. I’ve used 2x2 inch and it works quite well.

    I am still wrestling with the hows, whos and whats of designing the die system for my treadle hammer. I had no idea how involved this can get. Thanks for posting this edition John.

    Thanks John! I am trying to figure out how this notch is any different than just doing the same thing on a square flat die. The only thing I can come up with, is that the notch allows you to get the work closer to the center of the dies. That would seem to be an advantage. Keep in mind that I am not the sharpest hot cut hardy in the shop, and many things escape me. Jerry

    The notch is just like using half faced blows with a hand hammer at the anvil. The notch is only in the bottom die, so when the full size top die strikes the work it offsets it at the notch.

    Really good John, love that hammer and die. Your camera keeps going out of focus, don't know if you know or not. Does it in a few video's now.

    I know it when I edit, but not when it filming, so once it happens its to late to fix. I'm experimenting with more manual focus to see if it helps, but it also won't adapt if I move to much. All part of using a backup camera while the main one is in for repairs.

Even 2nd time around I got lost in the content...so i had to watch it the 3rd time to notice. That's a really nice machine and those dies are pretty multitaskable. Blessed days sirSir, Crawford out

    Watching you at the Say Mak hammer, why are anvils so large? The die portion is so small compared to the anvil.

  • @BlackBearForge

    @BlackBearForge

    5 жыл бұрын

    The greater the mass of the anvil the more solid the overall hammer and the more efficient the hammer is. Up to a point the same is true for a 2 pound hand hammer on a 100 pound anvil.

    @@BlackBearForge So what is the weight of the anvil on the Say-Mak? I'm guessing close to 1K.

    Didn't you say those dies were a]made backward do to some miss comm between you and the retailer ?

  • @BlackBearForge

    @BlackBearForge

    Yes and no. What they did was make them as pairs of tops and bottoms with the notch but you only need the bottom dies notched. So this is actually a top dies flipped over, which requires the dies keys to come in from the other side.
