Not your average fly fishing session
Ойын-сауық
Took the fly rod out to the surf for the first time trying to get lucky and catch some surf perch or even striped bass. I was using an 8 weight Sage Fly rod with 7.5 foot tapered 16lb test leader and a sand crab imitation fly.

Pro tip: stretch the fly line before each fishing session. When the line is stored on the reel between fishing trips it develops memory. I loop mine over the side mirror before I leave the parking lot. You can also loop it around a tree or post, don't loop it around a rock ( will nick the line). Walk away until all the flyline is off the reel, going from the reel to the mirror and back to your hand. I give a couple good sustained pulls of 40 lbs or so for 10 seconds each. Another tip is when you get home strip all the fly line off the reel, leave it attached to the backing on the reel, and hang it in long loose coils. Also rinse and wipe your line after each use before storing.

Keep your rod tip at the water while you are stripping. Also practice a "strip set" for salt water fly fishing. Lastly try a non slip loop knot. It allows your fly to move a lot more, for a more natural movement on your fly. There are pros and cons to a stripping basket. I don't use one, but a lot of people do. Well done! You got a lot right!

I'm a New England saltwater fly fisher. Stripping baskets are a must if there's moving water or weeds in the water. Agree about keeping rod tip close to surface. I especially like the use of wading sandals instead of clunky wading boots. IKEA has a white step stool for kids which makes a compact stripping basket, about $6.
Dude! I've been wanting to try this for ages! So glad you finally made a video about it. Stoked on your first surf perch with the fly rod! Can't wait till I get mine! 👍🤙
I don’t know anything about fly fishing but I know a lot more after watching this video. Thanks man.
I think the color on that jacket is perfect as is. I'd definitely wear it
Thank you Matt, great to see you out again! I used to TRY to fly fish, I learned I suck at it:)

I started fly fishing in 1984, but I gave it up because I was too busy raising 3 kids by myself. I want to get back into it, but I'm waiting for warmer weather here. Thank you for this video, which reminded me how much fun fly fishing is! I hope everything goes well with your surgery.
I just recently watched some videos about fly fishing the surf and then this popped up in my recommendations lol.
Absolutely loved this video! Thank you
So excited when I saw you posted this! I love fly fishing in the surf. Keep up the good work!
You effortlessly explained the fly setup to people who know nothing about it. Thank you. Awesome video I've often though about this as I fish the same areas as you. I just have no clue what to do with a fly rod.
Had to get on my upright bass with that chill music at the beginning👍
Glad to see you finally fly fishing the surf! There’s no more challenging environment to swing a fly rod. Just wait till you hook into a Striper on the fly! Great stuff as always!
As soon as I saw the notification I was clicked straight to the video, exited to see what happens
Great video, Your fly fishing has improved a lot! One tip, when stripping the fly back in, keep your rod tip lower to the water and pointed directly at the fly. This helps you feel a strike more readily. I’m sure this can be difficult with waves but thought I’d mention it. Also, check out a “strip set” when fishing with streamers. It’ll help you hook up with a much higher percentage of fish! Keep the fly fishing videos coming!!
Nice bro good to see a fisherman who's not afraid to try different kinds of fishing styles
Your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me hahaha
Great video! You provided a glimpse into the past for me because my father fished for surf perch with a fly rod at the beach in Cayucas during the 90's. He weighted the fly to help keep it on the bottom and was quite successful. Thank you for the great shots and your reminders of being careful and respectful of the surf are spot on. A young soul was lost at Muir Beach recently who was washed off the rocks while fishing with his buddies. They tried to save him but they were drowning as well and were unsuccessful. Be safe my friend! Chuck
Great explanation of loading the rod. Good job!
I've often thought fly fishing is more fly than fish. But once you try it, and once you catch a fish, you're the one who's hooked. Great video, as always!

Good job. You pretty much got all your terminology correct. Your casting motion is actually pretty good for a rookie. Your casting wrist is on a very good horizontal plane. No wonder your line is shooting out fairly well. Make sure you’re always wearing sunglasses. Surf flies can often get into your face or back of the head depending on the wind or if your fly is hitting the water at the end of the forward or back cast and weighting down your fly. Be safe out there.
You remind me of my older brother who passed a decade ago. You both look alike and plus my brother loved fishing too. I miss him a lot and just knowing how you carry yourself and how you talk and have passion for fishing. It is sweet to know and see how you resonated resonated my older brother P.s my brother name is Michael I found out your name is Matt
Great video! The guys at Lost Coast Outfitters have some great gear and info for fly surf fishing. The have some fly rods that are custom made for the West Coast Surf.
Great video !!! Grew up fly fishing all over Oregon, salmon, trout, steelhead. Just pulled the rods out this week I’m in HMB. Hope to run into y’all 🎣
Good attempt at explaining, it's hard to explain but I get it! 🤸
Hope everything works out with your surgery and you have a fast recovery
Beach fly fishing is THE most difficult type of fly fishing. Come down this summer and sight cast to Corbina and Spotfin Crocker. One tip, fish A LOT SHALLOWER then you think. Where you were standing is where the perch most likely were at - they feed in crazy shallow water.
👍🙏 fast recovery.
Cool Video! This is what i do when i fish for seatrout. two pro tips: if you have the linebasket on your side-hip, you will be able to get more line in one strip, because its a longer distance aka more movement in the fly. You could also point the tip of the rod towards the water and the end of the fly rod higher up (Where the reel is) towards your arm, when you strip in. If you do this, you will feel the strikes much easier and can set the hook easier aswell :)
Loving those wide camera shots
ima cop me a camo jacket for sure also need to restock my jiggy jigs for this season rock bangin!
Well done bro. You have improved so much with the fly rod. From the thrashing it about. When you think you are loading the rod. You need to pause an extra second- 2 seconds. What your cast at 15:15, You need to stop the back cast between 11-12 on a clock position. This will allow the line to flex the rod . Hope this helps 🎣
You explain loading up the rug perfectly
This is 🔥
All summer down here in southern California im usually casting in and just to the other side of the trough right up at the beach. Corbina, perch, croakers, and even the occasional hali can be right in there.
Loved watching this I do the same in wales Uk for bass
I HEARD THE HAIKYUU OST AT 10:38 I was calling enjoying the video and it just hit me 😂
A short straight piece of mono or fluorocarbon also works in the surf! Packaged leaders like that include the tippet on the end… you’d only add tippet after you trim the included tippet section back after changing flies or to lengthen your leader with a thinner or less lbs. test tippet.
Time flies when you're flie fishing haha

Good little tip! I like it!
@iflanzy
2 жыл бұрын
Why's that?
@areess6209
2 жыл бұрын
@@iflanzy When assembling from the bottom you're constantly having to balance the weight of the bottom of the rod with a flexible mid shaft or stick it into the dirt/sand to hold it still. Assembling from the top down keeps the fragile tip in the air and keeps the rod out of the dirt/sand.
@iflanzy
2 жыл бұрын
@@areess6209 While I've never put my rod together on a beach, I have a 9' 5wt and I don't see the helpfulness of doing what you're talking about. The rod is going to get wet anyways and when fishing, you're most likely resting your rod against the tree or on the ground at some point anyways. It's also very simple to always have the tip in the air by starting the assembly with the handle piece...by just putting a section on at a time normally.
@areess6209

@@iflanzy Water. Sure. I'm talking about dirt and sand possible getting into the reel when you put it on the ground. My reel isn't separate from the rod when I out it together. So I start at the top and work my way down. That way nothing is getting dragged in the dirt.
We usually use our Spey setups to do this. 13’3” rods to get above the waves and get distance.
