I like how Alfred Molina changed his character from sweet family man to a monster when he said that they were staying in Iran.

@@nikolasmacedonites917 Its the Truth. Ask women and girls who have successfully escaped Islam to Canada, Australia, or Thailand. Their stories are shared. Islam does not want the world to know how it treats its women, because if the world knew, they would fight to free the women of Islam from constant physical and psychological abuse and damage. The Women who escaped tell their stories, and they match what is Betty Mahmoodi's account of life for Women in Islam. Islam hides its heinous treatment of women behind a dark wall of secrets and lies. Islam is the enemy of the people. ALL religions are the enemy of WOMEN. Rleigion should be outlawed, and replaced with UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
It's a story of a mother, her determination and courage. it's also story of a male dominance over women in the name of religion. True religion is not the one which men are scripting. It has happened in Iran, but it can happen anywhere in the world. Name of persons and colour of religion may be different but the stress will be same and sufferers will be same as well.

There is another version which is supposedly much closer to the real events (from the book.) Shot on a lower budget and with a different cast of actors. May have been a TV movie. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it (missed it on TV.) I only saw the big screen cinema version (Not Without My Daughter) which is only loosely based on the book and had a number of fictional elements added.

Not an easy film to watch. I was inspired to see it after listening to some songs by the Danish thrash metal group Artillery who have written songs about events going on in the Middle East. Reportedly during the scenes where Alfred Molina had to beat Sally Field's character, he reportedly hated doing the scenes so much that he felt absolutely rotten after and made sure sure that Sally was fine. Ironically Alfred reportedly got belted by one guy who hated his portrayal of Syed Mahmoody in this film. It's not the only time, there was a very popular soap in the UK with a very dark side and there was one scene where one of the really bad characters kills a woman and child by pushing them to their deaths. A lot of people didn't like that scene at all and one day when this actor who played that bad guy went down the pub, he got beaten up mercilessly by a couple of men who were horribly offended by his portrayal.
