Not What We Expected of Scotland!

For this Scottish roadtrip we booked our car with Rentalcars:
rentalcars.tp.st/29QZ10ZX
Did you know Scotland looked liked this?
We didn’t! We expected rocky shores and cliffs that drop into rough seas below,🌊but not beaches that look like they could well be found in Hawaii or the Bahamas! 🏖️🐚
In this video we spend our perfect day on the west coast of the NC500: beach hopping, nosing around a local pottery shop, hiking and eating mouthwatering Scottish pies.🥧🥧
We end the day in the Bone Caves 🦴🦴🦴🐻‍❄️ 🐻
📍 PLACES WE VISITED:
• 🏡 Where we stayed: Kirkaig Lodge B&B, Lairg
• Highland Stoneware Lochinver (Factory shop)
• Achmelvich beach
• Clachtoll Beach
• Lochinver Larder (pie shop/ restaurant)
• Bone Caves, Inchnadamph
We hope that you enjoyed this video!

Absolutely love Scotland. Used to go fishing with my ex father in law up there. Last time we went, we went into Callander for a drink and ended up staying very late {early morning} no one told us the taxis stopped running a couple of hours before. We ended up sitting in a bus stop till 6am till the shop opened. Owner of the shop got us a lift back to the farm in the back of a bread van. Lovely people. I always laugh when I think of that weekend. RIP Alan, best father in law in the world.

My wife and I drove the 500 way back in the 80s, it then became well known by the late 90s! We have driven and walked most areas in Scotland - we are born and bred here in Scotland! Midges are a gang in their millions when near heather or forestry, a midge net for your neck and face helps, also skin so soft (oil) helps to keep them from landing on you! You need to visit the Scottish islands - Skye/Harris/Lewis etc! There is so much to view/visit here in this fabulous country of ours! Haste ye back!

We went over to Glenrothes last week, did not make it to St Andrews but that gives us a good reason to go again. It is beautiful, but there are lots of beautiful places in the rest of the UK, the main thing though... there is not as many people about, nor as many vehicles . A cafe we visitred at erm Kingshorn ! it took them a while to make our lunch, I was on my second latte by the time lunch arrived, then again we were not booted out to make room. Pulled into a car park overlooking the bay, only two others cars and no cars on the EV charger, 15p per kwh ! bargain. The best bit about driving around Scotland, for the vast majority of the time you can forget about who is running the country, or is that ruining ! Our next trip is going to be somewhere in the middle about 60 miles north of Glasgow, or go a bit further towards Ben Nevis ! Partners family come from Cromaty, so I have to pop up there !

🙂Heh, I sent a Dutch friend a calendar last year of the beaches of the Scottish Islands with white sands and turquoise seas. His reaction was a tad cynical suggesting that they'd all been photoshopped and it didn't really look like that. Admittedly on grey and wet days it doesn't - but on bright sunny days there is no need to photoshop anything there, as your video clearly shows!

Yes, the Atlantic seawater only gets up to about 13c in mid Summer (warmer in shallow bays) and that certainly quickly dispels the notion of it being like the Caribbean when you dip a toe in. However it's surprisingly colourful and full of life underwater which you will see if you don a wetsuit and fins, mask and snorkel. There is even an underwater nature trail near Lochinver for snorkellers.

I'm glad you enjoyed Scotland. The world is just discovering that we have some of the most beautiful, pristine, secluded and quiet beaches in the entire world. This issue is of course that it is usually wet or windy. But there are so many white sand beaches without any buildings nearby let alone people and hundreds that don't even have roads leading to them. I'm afraid that the "secret" is climate change. Records are broken every year and we now have many more days of sunshine and record temperatures. Although we also still have plenty of days of rain, so don't plan a beach holiday.

The pie shop used to have a restaurant and we once had a meal in it that consisted of just pies. A small starter pie(fish?) a big savoury main course and a small fruit pie to finish. Definitely too many pies but a fun meal anyway.

The stoneware is really expensive but it’s indestructible so it’ll outlast most humans. We loved the pies so much we ordered a couple of times from pies by post. They deliver all over the UK. You were lucky with the weather but it’s a glorious place. Thanks for featuring one of my favourite locations. It’s heaven on earth.

Guys, one of the best midge repellents is an AVON product called "hands so soft". It's a moisturiser, that smells nice, but the midges hate it. A local chemist may stock it.

No, Skin So Soft was never that good. Anyway, they changed the recipe a few years back. Smidge is probably the best, but nothing is really effective. However, to stop the itch, just take an Antihistamine. The cheap supermarket versions are as good as the brand names.
