We moved from the US to Syria when I was 12. I got to pack one box of personal sentimental belongings. I packed that box with so much detail and care. It was the ONLY box that the movers missed. I was devastated. I needed like 5 therapy sessions as an adult to work through that shit. I feel for you ❤️

I can TOTALLY relate. I had a landlord just assume that the last load i had left to move was trash. That included ALL of my kids ornaments from them growing up and my Barbie ornaments ive been collecting for 35 years! It was and still is devastating!

I just wrote a similar comment about my ex boyfriend having stolen all of my ornaments! I’m so sick for her! My ornaments have been gone since 2012, but I feel nauseous thinking about it still! It kind of ruined a lot of how I feel about the holidays. Ugh! So sad! Ornaments mean a lot when you have children and have collected what they’ve made over the years.. I’m 50, and I had alot of memorable ornaments that would only mean something to ME! People are scrooges!

I work in Property Management and that is illegal! Your Landlord would have to reimburse you for all of that. Not that it would bring back your ornaments but, it should help replace them.

I'm so sorry, Lauren. You don't need to apologize for being sad about losing special keepsakes. I totally feel you on this. Of course there are bigger problems in life, but that doesn't mean that this isn't very upsetting. I'm so sorry. Also! It’s such a good thing you’re on KZread and have an ornament tour! You don’t have the objects, but you can still look at them and remember through that video. Once again I am so so sorry 💔 that is really heartbreaking.

A lot of the time it’s worse to lose sentimental items than big ticket, expensive items so you’re not being dramatic at all! I’m glad you at least have your video of your collection to look back on, even if you don’t have the physical items 💛

Damn, that hurts my heart for you! I can relate 1,000%. When my parents passed I was 21 (I'm 55 now), my brother 20 and we had my parents entire ornament collection Startin from the early 60's when they married, her collector glass bulbs, cheap plastic stuff, all the ones we made as kids in school and from my mom's ceramic painting phase to stuff I made after they passed away. My brother took possession of all of it as I moved cross country at 27 with one suitcase & one carry-on. He loves decorating so I was cool with it....then flooding at his rental & it was all destroyed including our mom's family bible....huge 6 inch thick beast fully hand painted illustrated & in Swedish. Everyone's experiences here makes my heart go out to you & everyone. Big hugs to all, remember them in your heart & start over with a deeper appreciation for the little things that bring you joy.

I've been there. It's such a horrible thing when it happens. Due to a partner not paying for our storage site 15 to maybe 20 years ago, I lost all my ornaments and what really hurt me so bad was losing the ornaments I had been collecting for my daughter every year since her birth. I can remember the one from her 3rd Christmas. It was a Hallmark called One Smart Cookie. I've searched for years now for that one and any others that I remember. Oh my god Lauren! I’m so sorry! I’ve been collecting special ornaments for the 45 years we’ve been married. Ours are also from our travels, and I always get one ornament that has the date on it. My second tree has about 130 Santas that I needlepointed and had professionally finished. I could not imagine losing them. I feel you right now so much! Edit: maybe you could put a letter in the paper appealing to the thief to return them. Put signs up around the neighborhood. Check flea markets, anyplace that they might have turned up. Appeal to your local paper, radio and TV channels to write the story up. Someone knows where they are, I just know it.

Oh, Lauren 🥺 It's totally normal to be mourning this. The ornaments are a scrapbook and a celebration of who you are and the people you love and the places you've been. I'm similar with my mugs & fridge magnets. But that first Christmas ornament is truly fitting, a fresh start 🌟

I’m so sorry. This is devastating because those ornaments were MEMORIES. They unlocked the connection between your brain and heart. I’m so glad that you have the video that you made. You can show your children that, at least. Also, a way of healing may be to recreate those ornaments with cardboard. Attach a picture of something that sparks the memory; on the back, write the date and what you remember about that memory. It could be a cathartic exercise - and you are allowed to cry happy, sad, and mad tears while you do it!

When it is something so precious to you it’s so personal and understandably traumatizing, regardless of what the items are. They were your history. I’m so sorry this happened to you. ❤❤❤

I relate to this SO much.. About 9 years ago, my apartment got broken into while we were moving out. We had quite a lot of random useless things stolen, but the number one thing I still struggle coming to terms with, is my laptop. It sounds dumb, but I struggle with memory issues so I take quite a few photos and had them all stored on my laptop. This was back before I had cloud storage or anything. All of my photos from my husbands and my first several years are missing. As well as photos of friends and family that have passed and I'll never see again. It's so hard to come to terms with the fact that those pictures will be gone forever and I'll always have a huge blank area in my memory. When someone steals from you, they think they are just taking material objects. Oftentimes, they end up being the thing that means the most to us. I hope you find your box and it brings you so much joy and relief! But I also know that the chances are very unlikely. Here is to new memories, and good riddance to 2022 🍷🥂 Much love to you Lauren 💜

I am so very sorry. I feel the exact same way about my ornaments. I’ve been collecting for 31 years and mine are out in extra garage/large storage shed away from house and it’s not locked. Oh girl! I know where this is going.. 😢 I’m 50, have 3 kids and when we sold our family home, and moved to a new home.. my entire Christmas everything had disappeared during storage! (My ex was storing some boxes for us, and sold my stuff on eBay!! And kept some for his own tree! He’d posted MY angel on his Facebook along with my highschool Snow White ornament!) this was 10 years ago, and I can’t bare to even get crazy over decorating the way I did anymore! Ps my children even messaged and called the ex, and his gf and begged for our stuff back.. he denied he had some! Even tho my little one had pics of our stuff on their tree, and circled pics of our tree from the year before, and HIS current tree with my ornaments on it! It was so awful! She asked him to give them back after Christmas bc she didn’t want his little ones to have nothing on their tree for Christmas! Ugh! This video made my stomach hurt as I’m watching!

I can relate to being stolen from. Had someone steal my family jewelry as a kid when I visited my grandmother. Still not over it.

We began ornament boxes for our kids when they were born. They include ornaments from our travels, ones they pick out each year, photos from their school pics in ornament frames, etc... Then when they get their 1st tree they have enough to fill it up. This is a family tradition in my entire family. Losing them would be devastating as each box represents a lifetime of memories!! I'm so sorry Lauren!!

I think the suggestion of opening up a po box for people to send ornaments to you is a good idea but if you don't want to do that, have you considered doing origami decorations for this year? We do an origami decorated Christmas tree every few years and it's a fun activity to do, the tree looks beautiful and clean up is super easy.

I’m so sorry this happened! That is absolutely devastating. I’m kind of the same way with ornaments, been collecting them for years, and we have several boxes full. There’s one box though that has all of our “special” and sentimental ornaments. One year between moves the box went missing, and I thought we had accidentally put it out with a pile of trash after cleaning out our shed. 3 Christmases came and went and honestly decorating the tree just made me sad, we didn’t even put it up one year. Then the next year I randomly found the box. I thought we had poured over every box we had in storage but somehow we missed it. I started bawling when I found it. I remember at the time I felt silly because they were just ornaments but no, they are memories. You are totally allowed to feel sad and again I’m so sorry that happened to you. I hope you’re able to rebuild a collection filled with even more wonderful memories. ❤

I can absolutely relate to the ornament attachment. In my family we each buy one special hallmark keepsake ornament of something we really love. We’ve been doing it since our son was born. It’s been 18 years now and you can kind of see his whole life progression thru those ornaments. We also get an ornament from places we travel.I would be absolutely gutted if anything happened to ours. That’s memories and special occasions and keepsakes that just cannot be replaced. It’s not silly at all to be sad. 😢
