Not the NC500. A BIG Scottish small bike adventure.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

You can't ride off road in Scotland. Can you?
Most adventure riders hit the North Coast 500 with their big adventure touring bikes.
So what would happen if you rode small trail bikes 1000 miles to the tip of the Outer Hebrides?
Would it be the off road adventure they were looking for?
Or just a huge pain in the a*se?

Another great mini movie! Beautifully shot and edited. I must have very different friends though - they would for sure check on the bike first, then tell me it’s poor form crashing my mate’s new bike and only then, maybe check on me.

I would agree with the light bike comment, especially as a short (29 inside leg) 61 year old rider who only got back into motorcycle ownership 4 years ago. My first bike in 2020 was a CRF250 Rally, which i took to the Netherlands (I was working out there) and a month later it was stolen, however my memory of 6 hours riding the CRF meant that when I chose a replacement it would be more comfortable. Next bike was a tiger900 RallyPro (yes i know, i picked the tallest option), that bike was as comfortable as i could wish for, taking it to Munich twice and Denmark twice, I also made a trip back from each location non-stop, 800+ miles in 15 hours and 19 hours respectively, however i never took it off road as I had no confidence in my skill level. Now I have a speedmaster Chrome, which is fine for what I do which is all tarmac, a jaunt down to lands end last year was a blast. That said I still have the urge to venture off road and have been seriously considering getting the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 as it is lower than the CRF and tiger, definitely going to test ride one. Scotland and Ireland are on the radar - need to make sure its not midge season though

That was a brilliant film of my country. I have been lucky enough to have traveled and lived all over Scotland including most of the islands. I agree with you 100% that the Outer Hebrides are magical and the vistas and beaches are stunning. There is a rumour that the Thai tourist board use pictures of those beaches to advertise their country. I was lucky enough to work on Lewis in Stornoway and had the same issue as yourselves because I constantly wanted to take my Land Rover off road but never really knew where I could go but did manage a few ventures off the beaten track. I just wish I had had a trail bike up there. The routes up to the windmills are one of the options for getting into the wilderness. I subbed and liked.

An excellent video and awesome story telling! I too had something similar happen to me last year where I was on an adventure and ending up breaking my 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals so completely understand the decision from Noel to head back because it's not a fun injury to deal with. First thing I did once recovered was to get myself a pair of Gaerne SG-12's and they've already paid for themselves multiple times over as I seem to come off my bike a lot hahaha.

Great video! I did Harris, Lewis, and north uist last year.. did it solo and preplanned campsites.. had a base campsite for 3 nights so took away the stress of finding somewhere but, missed the spontaneity of wild camping. Likewise, the freedom of doing it solo was mixed with a little sadness not sharing it with others.

Had the exact same amaze moment on finding that beach on Vallay! Tide times are not published but any tide time on N Uist will give you an approx low tide. We crossed 2 hours before low tide and came back 2 hours after and it was fine. However the tide does move fast so be careful and don't push your luck!

Great trip guys, and great video. Yes, we all go through ups and downs on adventure trips, everyone has their limits and expectations on what they want and go for, and it's not easy, but go with your gut instinct and you will not have any regrets. I feel for the guy that came off his bike and had to go home early, it's a shame he could not carry on with the trip. I'm Scottish and traveled all around Scotland on a bike and many times chanced my luck off road crossing over many miles of land, but have now twice been investigated by the police, and now wishing I covered my reg plate, LOL. I've just done the NC 500 in February on the bike and was fantastic, cheap accommodation, nobody on the roads and quiet, this is probably the best time to do the NC 500, if you try it in the summer, it is busy, expensive, midges and rain. Also when bike touring in Scotland you are better on a small bike rather than a big bike, you will enjoy it more. Thanks for sharing, cheers. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYmNta-HnLXNpJM.htmlsi=ZzfR7UhQiiWwg7_e

I'm fortunate to have a camp in 2 great countries, Scotland and Ireland. I hate the fact that the NC500 is now marketed as a tourist route and the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland, i've done both, even though both always did exist. Never done the outer Hebrides, but most of the west coast of Ireland looks like that, especially Donegal were I have a home and Achil island which can be reached crossing a bridge. Give it a try sometime, you won't be dissapointed. I've never ridden in a group, so never experienced the differing of opinion. Thanks for that mate, awesome.

Scotland definitely up there, in terms of what's possible for a microadventure. Shame about trail access, its funny how the right to roam is so liberal compared to England, yet that condition completely changes the nature of how free it is for us. For the latter half the aspect of group dynamics and how to hold an adventure together is really interesting...how we embrace certain challenges and discomfort is such an individualistic thing, how do you control it in a group setting? I'd say Noel is probably a bit of linchpin for the group, not to give him a big head or anything...hopefully he's mastered wheelies since this trip!

Also when your mate binned it it seemed the most damaged thing was his pride 😂. Nothing worse than trying to be a smart arse popping a wheelie and binning it. a mate of mine done one almost exactly the same 14 years ago and he still gets ripped rotten for it.

Interesting story, not all wine and smiles. the trick is to be able to have differences and even split before it becomes too sour even for a day or two, and not let that sourness remain to the next trip, that is the hardest. to avoid this people need to be honest and free speaking before planning about what they want to do and more importantly what they do not, having no plan obviously is risky for a group dynamic. I ride solo mainly, as its very difficult to find someone with a similar mindset, flexibility, attitude, enthusiasm that varies from day to day, group trips are usually smaller, simpler and with a more defined goal , its often if that goal is achieved the remaining time can become fractious for a group. I am a pre TET/GPS traveller so perhaps more willing to ride off a map line as opposed to a pink digital one or follow NC 500 or Wild Atlantic Way signs, so get exactly what you say about turning and looking though as you mentioned it can be frustrating, tireing, very time consumeing as well as rewarding. I have done lots in Spain and quite a bit in France using a GPS zoomed in tight and just jumped on any dashed lines heading the direction I am going with similar results, time is often the limiting factor. Use the tools and info thats available but do not let yourself be steered by them perhaps, saying that as someone who does only minimal route research I really do like the info boards on the WAW, but do not follow the arrows prefering to stay as near the sea usually trying all the littlist roads grass, dead ends en'all. Hope this little hi-cup in your group will be a learning lesson about wheelies far from home in a group, as well as a good planning session not just "I'll just go with the flow" . I disagree with your conclusion on bike I have owned a 450exc and now own a 250rally, 640adv and GS1200 and the trip you did and many similar that I have done the GS is the far better tool with a pair of trailee tyres fitted IMHO. Scotland is a fantastic riding Country, a number of years ago I set out to navigating the whole Countries perimeter staying as close to the sea as possible long before any clever person came up with a line on a map put a name to it so that peeps could flock to this "new" route, spent over 35 days so far and just completed the W Coast including Mull and Skye. Observation- Wild camping I do, open fires I do not anymore except on pebble beaches with drift wood etc where no scar will remain, fed up of seeing lovely green spots scarred by black spots, petty, Karenish, unfashionable but my thought. , Lewis and Uist to do may take the wet suit, fins and snorkel perhaps. Thanks for the vid.

I have mixed feelings about this video. I live in Scotland and exercise my right to roam but only on foot and on my mountain bike (which is what is permitted). For exploring on an adventure bike off road I'll head for England, Europe or Scandinavia and stick to stuff that's legal. It's a shame that it's not possible to explore off road legally without the landowner's permission in Scotland but pushing the limits on a motorcycle may impact on access for other user groups (who currently enjoy free access) in the longer term. Not preaching, that's just my thoughts, YMMV. Stunning scenery anyway and glad you had a good time. BTW, I think I stayed on the campsite on Lewis that you used, possibly the most depressing campsite I've ever used (the opposite of the site at Big Sand/Gairloch)!

All very understanding of Noel, but if he'd just flipped my new bike showing off to the GoPro? He wouldn't have been able to feel the pain in his foot anymore, because of the new pain in his bollocks! 🍒🥾🤣🤣

I honestly don't understand how you guys do so many miles on dual sports. I'm 6'3" and 230 lbs, I would be in agony after an hour on any of those bikes. It's a good reminder why I bought a 2022 CB500X rather than a dual sport - the CB500X is capable enough off pavement (after a rear shock upgrade) to get the job done, but just so much more comfortable for long pavement sections. The upcoming Ibex 450 is looking like a very nice unicorn bike for my needs, just wish that a Japanese manufacturer would make a bike like that one.

Would Noel have still had the same injury if he was wearing a stiffer, more protective boot? Scotlands a great place to ride around, the west coast and islands especially, Nice video!

9:30 is exactly the facts . Scotland has 1 road around the outskirts and I wish they never branded it and started selling fridge magnets. You literally cannot move for wannabe outdoor persons with the customary rab jacket and hired campervan. I live in scotland and love those roads for riding but avoid it now due to the fad.

There's plenty of other roads in Scotland we can ride on.While the NC 500 was a marketing triumph, it's possibly more of a pain in the arse for those living on and around it.That being said, there are those who earn a living on it so horses for courses.
