Fun fact: all the young actors who auditioned for this film also auditioned on the same day for _Star Wars._ Lucas and DePalma were friends and came out of USC at the same time, and since they were getting their films ready at the same time and were taking their auditions from the same pool of young talent at the time, they decided to do the auditions at the same time in the same building for convenience. So Sissy Spacek and William Katt and Amy Irving, etc. all auditioned for Leia and Luke as well as for Carrie, Tommy, and Sue. There are clips of the auditions around, and seeing William Katt try out for Luke Skywalker is really fun. :)

This is why I love watching reactors. The first time you see Carrie you share her paranoia that everybody is out to get her. It's easy to empathize. When the movie tricks you into thinking Tommy is in on the prank, you can see how Carrie may think even the gym teacher, her best ally, is against her. Unfortunately, Stephen King was ahead of his time when it comes to school violence. I suspect the perpetrators of some these crimes are a lot like Carrie.

That whole prom destruction scene is the wildest, most creatively directed scene in horror movie history. I loved that whole split-screen effect that showed Carrie’s gym destruction from various different angles. In a good way, director DePalma went absolute nuts with that scene and it truly delivered. My god, did it ever!

Terrific reaction! Watch this again: you'll see that Sue and Tommy are NOT part of the plot: from the moment Sue tells Chris to shut up, she is separate from the "mean girls". Tommy is not part of the hostile gang - he's indifferent until the actual prom, or maybe a little before, when Carrie runs away, and then he hears Sue's reasoning with the gym teacher. The decorating scene with Sue saying she owed Carrie is another clue to us that she has nothing to do with prank. Watch again and you'll see that there are several very different motivations going on this story.

Also: The scene with Norma and Chris are whispering while Sue's decorating is almost what happened in the novel: Chris finds a copy of the ballot which had Carrie's name on it and Sue's crossed off. At this point did she started to put the prank together.

Only problem with that decorating scene is that in the previous scene you see Norma at a beauty salon sitting under a hair dryer (red hat on top of it) and then it cuts to the gym and she hasn't gone to the salon yet.

The fact that Ms... ah, I can't remember her movie name, book name Ms Desjardins... singled Sue out in the first scene, being surprised that Sue was participating in the hazing in the first place; it wasn't like her. Her motives may not be totally pure-hearted; she wanted to have a quick-fix for her guilt and that doesn't exist. But she's definitely innocent of wanting to _hurt_ Carrie.

Actually, the book made it clear early on that Sue and Tommy had nothing to do with it; Sue was consumed with so much guilt over the locker room incident, that’s why she made Tommy take Carrie to the prom. Also, Sue and Chris hated each other so much, there’s no way Chris would have confided in Sue about the prank. Anyway, the best Stephen King movie adaptations are Carrie, The Shining and Dolores Claiborne.

Carrie was so bullied to the point where she saw red (pun not intended) when the blood was dumped on her, only the baddies were laughing, but to Carrie, it no longer mattered and all were going to feel her rage. The coach/teacher was not laughing, it was Carrie's rage and hearing the voices that made her believe that Ms. Collins was in on it. This movie is a masterpiece, both for the creator of the story, Stephen King, but also for director Brian DePalma. Interesting tidbit, the casting for Carrie took place the same day, and same room as George Lucas' casting for Star Wars. Brian and George (and Spielberg) were friends from film school, so we could've easily had some of the actors from Carrie in Star Wars, and vice versa. DePalma dated Nancy Allen (Chris, the bitch from Carrie) and cast her in 2 more of his movies, Dressed to Kill (1980) and teamed again with John Travolta in Blow Out (1981), to which she portrayed totally opposite of her character in Carrie. Eventually, she went on to do the Robocop movies and Poltergeist 3. Piper Laurie (Carrie's mom) was from the contract studio Hollywood days and Brian DePalma had to talk her out of retirement to do this part, which earned her an Academy Award Best Supporting Actress nomination.

the fact that Carrie is abused in such horrible ways by everyone from the bullies at the school to her mother to a freaking random kid on a bike makes you realize how cruel people actually can be to others. its a tragic story that shows how repulsive entitled people can be (Chris's unprovoked hatred), how disturbing someone can be when they take their beliefs too far (no offence intended), and how seemingly "innocent pranks" can have unimaginable consequences. even though this isn't a "fun" movie, it's my favorite from Stephen King because of the truths it rings and the warnings it gives.

This movie was made in a very different time, so prepare to be surprised or even a little shocked certain differences to this day we live in now. The bullying you see the girl doing to Carrie is not unrealistic. In the current environment we live in, people are very aware and vigilant against bullying...but back then bullying went unchecked on a regular basis and no one really stepped in. Also back then it was common when someone was getting hysterical to slap the person to snap them out of it...where as if you did that today, you'd be in for a lawsuit and having people after you to "Cancel" you. I've watched several reactions by young people lately and most seem to have a hard time watching this because of the treatment of Carrie because it too much for their sensitivities...but that's the point. It's supposed to make you uncomfortable...you are supposed to hate the mother...that's the point to show how this treatment and the terrible environment Carrie is in turns this innocent girl with these powers into a destructive force. This movie is meant to be a tragedy. Carrie doesn't start out as the villain, but by the time the movie ends...she's been turned into one through her actions. I also think it's funny how everyone always immediately is so sure that Sue and Tommy are bad guys, when they are the only two other than the Gym Teacher that actually care about her. In the book it's made more clear that Tommy actually starts to fall for her as the story progresses and when the blood is dumped on her and the bucket falls and hits Tommy in the head, it actually kills him, which is what actually sets Carrie off and pushes her over the edge. In the book she burns everyone in the Gym, and then walks through the town destroying much of it...telepathically making sure of the people there know it was her that caused all of the destruction.

I could not stop laughing! Then, as the movie went on, you were so mesmerized at times you stopped commentating! Which is a high compliment....to the movie! Such a one-of-a-kind horror movie; as you say, the horror is her situation more than it is the conventional scares. But they do throw in that iconic jump scare at the end, highly imitated (end of "Friday The 13th" comes to mind!). Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (and William Katt!) were so great in this movie. Both actresses got nominated. Rosemary's Baby got two actress nominations (and won one), The Exorcist had two actress nominations and Carrie did. Those are the only horror movies I can think of that got Oscar nods until Kathy Bates in "Misery", and Rick Baker's makeup for "American Werewolf In London". THANKS!!!! PJ Soles, (who played bully Norma with the red hat), was well liked by director Brian DePalma. She was initially only signed on for one or two quick scenes and no speaking part. She had showed up to her audition wearing her red hat. Brian requested she use it for the character. During the volley ball scene, she was only supposed to yell at Carrie like the other girls. Instead, she spontaneously took off her hat and whacked Sissy Spacek (Carrie) over the head with it. Some of the pins in the hat got stuck in Sissy’s hair, and she yanked it away ruthlessly anyway. Some clumps of hair ended up in her hat. She felt horrible afterwards and apologized to Sissy. But Brian was so impressed, he signed her on for the rest of the movie and gave her more screen time and dialogue!

Yep, the dream sequence at the end is just Sue's nightmare, not setting up a sequel. Though she had nothing to do with the plot to humiliate Carrie at the prom, she is the reason she and Tommy are there... There is a "sequel", THE RAGE: CARRIE 2, which has nothing to do with this same story (but IS actually a pretty good movie!), and Carrie's name shouldn't even be in the title. Rachel, the main character in THE RAGE is some relation of Carrie's. Amy Irving does appear in the movie as Sue Snell in her later years. Anyway you did a great job with this reaction. I think Ollie was overthinking the last scene. It was just added to make people leave the cinema even more shaken than they already were. It was filmed with Amy Irving walking backwards, then played the film backwards, which made it look like she was going forwards. That's why you can see a car going backwards in the background. Instead of using a stunt double, Sissy Spacek insisted on being buried underneath all those rocks.

As I recall, Stephen King was a middle or high school English teacher and incorporated some of the bullying and "mean girl" actions you see in the film, adding the fictionalized telekinesis to ramp up the scare factor. William Katt would go on to star in the short lived but semi popular TV series The Greatest American Hero, and this was an early film role for John Travolta. The 2013 remake...had a couple good moments, if only because Julianne Moore was creepy as the mom. I listened to an audio book version of Carrie not long ago--read by Sissy Spacek.

Miss Collins slapped Carrie because back then, slapping a hysterical person was considered the standard treatment. It wasn't meant as cruelty or punishmend - it was thought that the slap would "snap them out of it". Of course, it _can_ get a hysterical person to stop, but mainly out of fear they'll be hit again, so... not a great technique. The closet is Margaret's ignorant interpretation of the biblical admonition that prayer should be conducted "in your closet" and not in public. Problem is, "closet" was the Elizabethan term for "bedroom" or "private room", NOT a wardrobe! (Thus we see the fallacy of "literal" readings of scripture - the words you use now might not have meant the same things back then. It's easy to think Sue and Tommy were in on the plot, but they weren't. The book makes it much clearer, as it goes into Sue's mind in the parts that are ostensibly from her autobiography, where she explains that it was her clumsy, inexperienced attempt to do something nice after being so awful to Carrie. She had repented and wanted to atone. (Chris, on the other hand, was a raging, hateful ball of entitlement who thought everyone else was beneath her, and had an almost sexual obsession with humiliating Carrie.) Keep in mind that, as awful as that pig-killing scene is, it's also basically the way that pig was always going to die. He just got offed a bit earlier than scheduled. (And didn't end up as pork chops.) It is the Psycho music. DePalma has always been a huge Hitchcock fan, and he used the violin screech as a tribute. For me, Tommy was always one of the saddest parts of the book. He was a kind, decent kid who wanted to please Sue, and who ended up falling just a little bit in love with Carrie, who suddenly became beautiful when happiness found a place in her face. He wasn't part of any plan, and he was the first casualty of Chris's hate. I keep hoping someday someone will make a film of Carrie with an actress who actually _looks_ like Carrie. She was not a pretty girl, mostly from neglect and sadness and depression. She was overweight, had bad skin, walked hunched over, and had the aura of the perpetual victim. She only blossomed at the prom. But there is no place in films for girls who aren't pretty, sadly. And lastly, I was surprised when I heard that King tends to downplay this book because he says he knew nothing about women at the time he wrote it. I'm not sure what he means, because he certainly caught the psychology of the kids I knew in the 70's when this came out. I think he was under that cultural impression that boys and girls are "so different" and it was impossible for him to get in a girl's head, but it wasn't. He caught the flavor of those uncertain, adolescent thoughts beautifully. It's one of the best debut novels I've ever read - it was obvious we were reading a new major voice in fiction. :) P.S. LOL, an answer to something you asked: the ending of the hand coming out of the ground is DePalma's tribute to another great film. The reason for it (other than a really good shock fright) is that the book also has a second ending after all the destruction, and although it's very good, it's not connected to the plot of the main story. It also wouldn't have struck the note that DePalma wanted. So he replaced it with this ending.

I would also suggest other Polanski films that have a Hitchcockian feel to them: Dress to Kill (w/Michael Cain & Nancy Allen) and Blow Out (John Travolta & Nancy Allen). Keep up the great work. :)

Thanks for another great reaction video. Definitely one of my all time favorite genre films. Also came out the same year I was "hatched", lol. Fun facts: George Lucas was casting the original Star Wars at the same time and William Katt who played Tommy Ross also auditioned for Luke Skywalker. The actress who played Sue Snell's (Amy Irving) mom was played by her real life mom.

At no point are we supposed to think that Sue and Tommy are complicit in the prank. There is no "twist", the film makes it clear from the outset that they are "nicer" than the gang of bullies who are out to get Carrie. Sue feels guilty for taking part in the initial shower room incident and tries to make amends by persuading her boyfriend to take Carrie to the Prom. He goes along with it to keep his girlfriend happy but quickly sees Carrie as the nice and potentially attractive girl she is. He has no idea about the horrific prank, nor does Sue. They do all this with the best intentions, unaware of how badly wrong it will go for Carrie and all concerned. The shock ending which turns out to be a terrifying nightmare by the traumatised Sue (who is no doubt suffering survivor's guilt) is just that: a shock ending, not a set-up for a sequel. De Palma does this again in several of his later films, and other horror films imitated it too, notably the original 'Friday the 13th'. The split diopter is a visual trademark of the director, Brian De Palma, not unique to this film. He uses it in virtually all his films, which you would enjoy I think.

First, I love the Keith Haring shirt!!! Nice! Second, I enjoyed your reaction but more so, I enjoy your in depth and informed analysis of the film and the film making in all of your reactions. These are elements most people, including myself, pay little conscious attention to because, as designed, we aren't supposed to explicitly notice those things individually; we're meant to enjoy the overall combined effect in the movie. Most of us focus on the actual story and not how the sound, cinematography, music, etc subconsciously enhance the story. But, the way you break them down into their component parts really helps me to appreciate these elements and to understand how these elements all work together.

This was an AMAZING, reverent, appreciative reaction, as I expected from you! BUT, I'm also so disappointed: of all the KZreadrs who've reacted to this movie I was SO confident that you'd understand early on that Sue and Tommy aren't part of the prank. It's really interesting: when this movie first came out, 1970s audiences generally understood that, but it seems modern audiences are more cynical or just don't pay attention as much! There are so many moments that indicate Sue and Tommy are genuine: Tommy sticking up for Carrie against the English teacher, their scene with Miss Collins, Tommy's kindness to Carrie, Sue's admission that she feels she owes it to Carrie, Sue's general antagonism towards Chris (the actual villain - if she was in on it, why would she be so hostile to her?). I just can't understand how anyone can watch this movie and think Sue and Tommy are "in" on it.

I remember renting this movie with a friend when I was thirteen and that opening locker room scene really tripped us out. We were just expecting a typical horror movie, but this was something completely different. I always thought that the religious fanaticism aspect was a bit over the top (it's a common trope in Stephen King's work and he's rarely subtle about it) but this is definitely one of the greatest and most unconventional horror films of all time and the way it deals with the themes of bullying and social ostracization is still very poignant and relevant. Great reaction, keep up the good work.

I would not say it's over the top. There are people just like Margaret White in this country. Sadly, that kind of religious mania is not considered mental illness anymore, though it used to be.

@@Serai3 Perhaps, but I still feel like the portrayal is goofy and lapses into unintentional comedy at times. There are better and more realistic ways to depict the horror of organized religion (such as their disturbing habit of covering up atrocities and protecting abusers) than just straight up cartoonish villainy. Stephen King was still a young writer when he did Carrie so I won't hold it against him, but when the same tired tropes are popping up in his later novels like Under the Dome it becomes tiresome.

  • @Serai3

@@silversnail1413 Oh, sure, it can certainly be taken that way. In fact, Piper Laurie has always said that when she first read the script, she thought it was supposed to be a comedy. She just couldn't believe they wanted her to play this woman straight. But she definitely did a good job. I'm going to hazard a guess that you had a good mom who never screamed at you, right? Because although my mom wasn't a lunatic, she _did_ scream at me and was abusive at times, and Margaret did not strike me as goofy, but terrifying. Not as terrifying as in the book (Laurie did get a bit operatic with her voice), but still she was not funny to me because I knew what Carrie felt in those awful scenes.

@@silversnail1413 Also, I have the suspicion that it isn't a trope, but something out of his personal history. He's never talked about it directly that I can recall, but that woman who keeps showing up (at least in his early work) over and over doesn't feel like a stereotype to me but rather an attempt to exorcise someone from his past. Whoever it was, she certainly scared the krap out of him!

"They're all gonna laugh at you!" Fun Fact: The prom scene took over two weeks to shoot and required a total of 35 takes. Christian Iconography Fact: In Carrie's house, the statue of a religious figure shot with arrows represents St. Sebastian. It is not a crucifix and does not represent Jesus Christ. Buried Alive Fact: Ever the stickler for authenticity, Sissy Spacek insisted that she - not a double - be the one whose hand shoots up out of Carrie's grave during Sue Snell's nightmare sequence, so she was positioned under the rocks and gravel. Director De Palma had her husband bury her, because he didn't want anyone else to do it. Sissy Spacek would randomly ask "Are We Ready Yet?" while waiting for them to set up the shot between takes. Black Comedy Fact: Nancy Allen claims she never realized her character was going to be so evil until she saw the finished film. She thought she and John Travolta were playing such self-centered, bickering morons that they were there for comic relief. According to Piper Laurie, she honestly thought her character was too over the top fanatical to be taken seriously. Brian De Palma had to take her to the side and personally tell her it was a horror film and not a "black comedy" as she thought it was. Even so, she would constantly burst out into laughter between takes because not only was her characterization and wardrobe laughable in her eyes, but the dialogue itself was humorous for her. To this day, she still refers to and maintains the movie as a black comedy.
