Not So Super | Socket 7 PC From Recycling Center

Ғылым және технология

For about 3 years this computer has been sitting waiting for it's time for restoration. I thought it was a Super Socket 7 machine given it has AGP.
However...
It seems to pre date Super Socket 7 and was an early adoption of AGP. And boy is it a dogs egg of a system!
But lets do a restoration, build and see what it's like.

I'm really late to the game, but I think it's a great video and an excellent restoration! Also liked the comparison Cyrix/PMMX. Haven't seen a regular S7-Machine with AGP before. One thing I wanted to mention concerning VIA-Chipsets: they not only have shabby AGP-Implementation. The Apollo VPX (1997) has full UDMA-Support, but is a major PITA to get stable - regardless which driver I tried or what drives I used. It works whenever it feels like it and suddenly it locks up the entire machine. I'll never use VIA on Socket 7 again.

No worries! Better late than never. I like hearing other peoples experiences with such hardware. It's good to know that my issues are not related just with my motherboard. I get the feeling that the standard was a basket case with these chipsets.

I as well slightly remember, that VIA Chip Set was generally a no go these times. It was negatively burned into my brain for quite a long period of time.

I've never seen an AT board with AGP. I had no idea that was even a thing. The first time I ever saw an AGP card I was already on ATX, and I must have assumed at the time that ATX predated AGP. That aspect alone had me glued to your video, which was great by the way.

Not too common the old Baby AT motherboard with AGP. Mainly super socket 7 or a early slot 1 type. Too bady it's an early adoption of the tech and is quite crashy. Glad you enjoyed the video as well!

Voodoo agp cards don't use all the features of the agp slot, so they tend to work better on early agp implementations.

Ahh yes, I did see there was some jumpers suited for a Voodoo AGP card. It's a shame I don't own a AGP Voodoo cards. I've got just the one Voodoo 1 in my Socket 7 machine. But will give some other ideas a try as well.

Yeah I was surprised when I looked into the motherboard and found it pre dates super socket 7. I've since tried some more cards and BIOS settings. It helps a little, but the machine is still unstable at times. This also could be due to old caps on the board. But seems to work pretty good using a PCI card. Glad you enjoyed! :)

@@thesmokingcap I think that problem can be a combination with TNT2 card. It has higher power consumption, but those early board had only linear stabilizer for 3,3V line, so maybe its overheating. I used similar board with Riva 128 or Intel740.

This was my first thought also. I recall forcing 1x could resolve some crashes. Should be possible in the BIOS settings. Unfortunately though VIA chipsets were like this in the late 90s up to mid 00s...

@@thesmokingcap heres some text from a tomshardware article "The next thing I stumbled across was a problem with Socket7-systems based on the Ali Aladdin V chipset. I could only start Windows 98 when disabling 'AGP Turbo Mode' in the BIOS setup of the Asus P5A, but once that's done TNT2 runs without any problems. I'd still prefer to see this issue sorted out though, because the P5A is simply faster with 'AGP Turbo Mode' enabled."

4:00 before intel did? Intel never did it. Intel created agp and it was with slot1 at the beginning and never with socket 7 from intel.

I probably should have clarified that intel never made socket 7 chipsets with AGP until the 440 series slot 1. Both around 1997
