Thanks for your comments on the Gateron optical switches and the comparison to Cherry's. Since optical is just starting to take off, it's really hard to find any comparisons other than a quick sound test. Another youtuber tore down a k4 to comfirm that optical switch boards can be hotswap by nature, as the switch is only fastened to the mounting plate. Thanks to your reviews, I picked one up to have fun with the new optical switches from Gateron, Kailh and Outemu. Since you mention the Gateron yellows, I checked out their optical yellow, and found that they decided to get super confusing and put a really light spring (35±15gf) in the optical yellow. Their optical black (60±15gf) looks the closest to their mechanical yellow. Both are still linear.

Having used the Bluetooth version with a Mac I appreciated the replacement modifier keys (although you don't get one to replace the 1U Menu key) and the Mac mode which remaps the modifiers is a nice touch, however the downside of Mac mode for me is that it changes Fn+UIOJKLM,. (Home/Page Up/etc.) to a numeric keypad -- I keep it in regular mode and have the keys remapped on the Mac instead. There's currently no official Mac software either and the Windows software doesn't recognise the keyboard in a Parallels VM (I don't have Bootcamp set up to try atm). I have seen unofficial software but haven't yet tried it. Overall not a fan of the layout but I'm keeping it around as it's fine occasions when I need something wireless (when the laptop's the other side of the room plugged into the TV for example). The optical black switches are really nice too imho.

I actually think the bigger detriment to finding keycaps for this layout is the 2u left shift. Unless you get a set that's kitted out with that, you'll often have to sub in a numpad 2u key from a regular set.

Lol that was a cute intro. Nice review! Re: shopping for keycaps. I'm on a GK64xs which is essentially the same board but rebranded or distributed by someone else or something. Anyway, If you buy a standard full sized layout there are some compromises that can be made for full coverage. 2u left shift can be covered by numpad 0. The split space can be covered by the standard 2.75 and 2.25 shift keys (that you won't be using as shift keys anyways), and any additional 1.25u modifier of your choice. And then numbers from the numpad can cover the 1u fn, 1u alt/menu. I use 5 as a homing key to feel for my 1u shift. and 1u delete can be placed, but will likely be a different row profile (or if that bothers you use another number of the correct height row profile). And a bonus for the split space -- since the shift keys are sculpted in OEM/cherry -- you can flip them like you would any other space bar if you prefer that flipped space feel.

Nice review. I have the white version of the SK64 and really love it. I also have a black Dierya DK-61. The GK/SK/DK boards are all pretty much the same, except, as you said, the GK version supports MX mechanical switches and the others are optical. They vary a bit in build quality, aesthetics, options, and keycaps. A really solid platform, though (you can also find kits) and I enjoy typing on them. I would like to try some of the other switch options such as yellow and red. Pretty cheap to change switches...about $25-30 for a set of opticals.

by the way, is the keyboard meant to be as sensitive as it is? i previously had a cheap £25 keyboard that was quite heavy in comparison to my new SK64, and whenever my finger slipped onto another key it didnt go down as it was heavier. i find it annoying with the SK64, as its so sensitive and often inputs the wrong keys if my typing is off slightly. is mine faulty or is it just meant to be sensitive? i have gateron yellows on it and everything else is stock. i love the design and feel of it, apart from the typing.

for me it's perfect. I got the sk64 RGB with black switches. The software from epomaker is great but it's nothing for the easy user. They should at least linnk to some tutorials, so the new user can figure out at least primitive thinks. For instance, the Standard --Driver switch back and fort to see the light, bug. Nothing what a new user could figure out. I was thinking my keyboard is broken, until i found a good tutorial on YT. And of course the right small shift, was at start a little bit annoying, so i remapped the upper arrow as shift too, this helped me to get used to the layout, after 2 weeks i adapt the setup and dont need the remap anymore.

Otherwise, you can add "gk64" to your search on sites like amazon or aliexpress and find a few cheap sets that would give you actual properly labeled coverage. Or you would have to buy additional "mod plus" sets to cover the non-standard keys (but the price starts to add up when you start doing that, even on cheap sets). Im currently using "126 Key Double Shot PBT Keycap Set - Black Translucent (Vortex)" That I picked up from mechanicalkeyboards.com. and used the above mentioned compromises. Nice and think PBT caps with ok, but not perfect shine through if you care for it.

the huge problem of this board is that the second row is staggered 0.25u more than normal keyboards. This makes typing a bit more awkward specially if you type on a lot of keyboards regularly. The tiny shift is secondary compared to this, but bad nevertheless. I wouldn't have bought it if I knew this first characteristic of it.

I say it isn’t that worth it because you can get the durgod Venus for a extra 20 dollars if you get the wireless version and the 64 layout but if you don’t need the wireless or you get the sk61 wireless it’s more worth it I would say

Loving the skit in the beginning. Idk... I feel like TKL is just the best size. I personally always have a TKL for my daily driver (right now I've got the AK87 with some Zealios v2) and then I keep a 60% for my travel board to travel around with my laptop (currently got a GK61 with Zealios V2). I just can't seem to get into the sacrifices that come with 65% builds.

detailed review. good job on that. but it got annoying at times when the camera zoomed on too much on your face. rather than that I would have liked more focus on the keyboard itself to be honest.
