Not All Genetic Diseases are Inherited: Germline and Somatic Variants

Did you know that something can be genetic without it being inherited from a parent? In other words, it’s possible to have a genetic condition that did not come from your mom or dad, and it is possible to have a child with a genetic change that you did not pass on to them.
In this video, you'll learn the difference between germline and somatic variants as well as genetic vs hereditary. Other terms mentioned include; Mosaicism and De Novo
These are not your typical biology videos. This series is for anyone interested in learning about genetic testing today, what it can and can’t test, and how it relates to YOU. Subscribe and check back every Friday for a new short episode explaining something new to know in genetic medicine.

I took metronidazole for far too long in high doses without understanding it was dangerous and neither my PCP or my pharmacists ever warned me. It also didn’t help that they changed the guidelines on the maximum duration of the course every year.

This was a simple topic to understand. My only question would be what is the percentage of somatic diseases of the total heredity and somatic diseased?
