It's not a sad song whatsoever. It's about trying to find yourself. It's actually empowering and beautiful. These two have extreme difficulties with understanding even the most straightforward songs. A lot of the time it's downright shocking. I mean, death? Death!? This song has absolutely nothing to do with death, whatsoever. Nor is it dark or sad in any way.

Corgan about Mayonaise: “One that really jumps out is the song ‘Mayonaise,’ which is kind of a treasured song by Pumpkins fans, off of ‘Siamese Dream.’ It was the last song I wrote lyrics for on the album. And it got to the point where it was like okay, I’ve gotta write these lyrics, I’ve gotta sing this song. And when I wrote it, I felt like I just threw together a bunch of weird one liners, basically. It didn’t feel like it had any synchronicity to me; I was just looking for good lines to sing. And now when I sing the song, I’m just shocked how closely reflective it is of what I was going through. It’s almost like this weird personal anthem to my experience, but I didn’t feel that at the time. And I can see why people identify with it, because now I identify with it. It’s hard to explain without going into long-winded answers, but just the direct narrative aspects of it really surprise me. It’s like how you can look at Picasso’s art and see who he was [sleeping with] at the time, you know. But instead of painting her, he paints Madonna. The Madonna, you know what I mean. He turns his mistress into the holy mother. Similar things happened with me. Stuff shows up in all these weird places, but I don’t remember thinking that at the time. I was just struggling for a language.”

Billy Corgan (the lead singer) in my opinion, never felt understood and his songs are, for me, the cry of the anguished heart. This is by far my absolute favorite song I have ever heard. The Smashing Pumpkins has always resonated with me because I can relate to the fact that no matter what I say in a hundred words or a hundred years, no one will ever truly understand my heart. Something to also take from 90s Alternative was that the lyrics were a break in the mold from the "Hair Metal" of the 80s and early 90s where is was all about fast girls, fast cars and drugs. Alternative was abstract and sometimes incomprensible. You were supposed to find your own meaning by relating to them while dissecting them. Hope you liked this one. Thanks for reacting to it. You two have a great channel.

Fun fact that guitar crunch during the chores actually wasn’t planned. Billy said the guitar he used was shit and every time he stopped playing it made that noise it just happened to go really well with the song

Smashing pumpkins are a very delicate sharp band with just enough emotions to make their songs meaningful sound wise, if you want more emotionless and less serious(less traditional)rock jam to Faith No More their music is about attitude and energy, and the passion for experimentation. I love all music so I can appreciate music that's more soft(serious) or with a meaning and then also appreciate the abstract creativity(emotionless) part of music like bands like FNM or Mr.bungle

I’m 25 and am very blessed to have grown up with really cool rocker parents. They saw Smashing Pumpkins probably 10 times back in the day. My mom is terminally ill and this is the song from my childhood I’ve been listening to to think of her

Thanks for reacting to mayonnaise my fav. SP song for a couple reasons.. first the intro, listen for the layering.. he starts light then adds progressively stronger guitar as he builds to the power chords used in the rest of the song. few artists are better at the intro than billy corrigan. second, the lyrics. brad and lex got the meaning at the end, it's about feeling depressed. it's a good sign for both your mental health you didn't quite get it. it's easier for somebody who has lived with depression to recognize the theme. First Name pointed out billy didn't have a 'theme' in mind, he just wrote lines as he felt them in the moment. depression is sort of like a series of one liners, a lot of random thoughts and feeling that don't feel like they go together until you look back on it later... if you're a musical genius like billy you write a song about it and become a rock star... that solves all mental health issues :-)

This was one of the popular songs by the band. They were already big and this was one of the songs Mayonaise which was off that album. The first album was called GIsh and that was made before they became well known. Once the Album Siamese dream came out they were launched into the limelight. The pumpkins can be a very eclectic band from really hard rock songs to soft somewhat dreamy sounds of a ballad much like this one.

My all time favorite Pumpkins' song. To me, it's a cry of rebellion and definition - I'm trying my hardest to be my truest self, whatever the world wants me to be. I'll fail and fail, but still I'll try. And if that's not what it meant to Corgan, it's what it means to me, and I love it!

I've always loved this track. Some other hidden gems from the Pumpkins are the songs "Whir", "Frail And Bedazzled" from the Pisces Iscariot album and the extended version of "Drown" from the Singles Soundtrack. There's also a killer cover of the Fleetwood Mac song "Landslide" on the Pisces Iscariot album that's worth checking out.

My father had me make him some 99.1 HFS ( Baltimore Rick Station that killed it in the nineties ) CD mixes. Mayonnaise was one of the songs he requested. After doing that; I'm here three years later and can play [ save for maybe 10 ] their entire catalog on guitar. Their songs are so much fun to play.

This song can mean many things to many people.. To me it always represented that time between wanting everyone to like and appreciate you and your art, if you’re Billy, to the moment you realize you cannot please everyone, you just have to do you and let the chips fall.. For most people this is the first major blow to their idealism..
