Not a Woodturning Video

First an apology to all my regulars who might be hoping for an insane video where I have put the water tank on the lathe or had something come off the lathe and go through the tank. Maybe I can do that later but not today. Suggestions always welcome.
So the back story to this video:
Our water tank was old when we bought our house 19 years ago, it had a nice covering of moss and a small tree was growing out of the top of it. And was on a lean. We removed the tree but the large number of seeps has always meant we were loosing a small amount of water, it helped keep the moss green and would indicate the level water. Always look for the pluses.
We have only every bought water a couple of time in the nineteen years. Once in our first year and another when a “small leak” developed and we had he tank emptied and repaired.
This year things took a turn for the worse. We asked the team that had repaired the tank earlier to come see and they were unwilling to take the risk of repair. To paraphrase “it’s doomed!”
So a new tank.
Our good friends Brian and Karen from Riordan Construction gave us options and pulled everything together in a couple of days. They are brilliant.
Without water there will be no woodturning.
Tanks for watching :-)

Hi Brett, You’ll need to sell a few bowls to pay for that job! Surprised you didn’t try Selleys water proof glue to fix the leak! My heart goes out to you as we were flooded in 2008 and it washed away all the support round the edges of our water tank,we had to get a new tank, crane, and also dig down 700 mm as the ground was unstable after flooding. Big job and expensive even with volunteers helping. Job well done helped by attacking the problem straight away, nothing worse than having no water Regards

Thanks Mal. Yes no water is a big motivation. We had tried some products and the tank exterior looked like it had serious boils. We had had the inside repaired a few years back. The joint between the very well constructed base (one a lean) and flimsy walls was failing around the entire tank. So decided replace was better than repair. No worries for another twenty years or hopefully more And my wallet sympathies with you wallet 💳 Brett

Thanks for sharing this Brett. I live in the US and in a small town. Water is piped directly to my house and is something that totally take for granted every day. There are still many people who live rurally around here that rely on wells and cisterns for their water needs. I’m glad you were able to get a solution in place man. Best wishes sir.

As always good sir a brilliant comment. Funny thing is we live in a coastal community down the road from New Zealand’s largest city but for some historic reasons we were never connected to the water supply infrastructure So there are water tanks all over the place to the thousands of people living here. Trust spring is treating you well and it will be a great summer Brett

@@TurningStarkers Ohio spring is a beautiful sight my friend. I must confess, it hurt my heart a little to see you have to deal with this. We’ve had a few unforeseen projects come up that had set me back quite a bit financially. The joys of home ownership I suppose. lol. I’ve not had much time for turning anything but hope to get back out there soon. I’m happy that your video came with a happy ending. Water is restored and everything came together well. Lord willing, you’ll get some time to relax and spend some time in your shop. All the best Brett.!

Hi Louis. Just jumped on google to have a look at a Robust lathe. And wow they live up to their name. 209kg would make it really difficult to “walk” down the workshop like mine did. 😀 Thanks for watching Cheers Brett

Yet again a great video Brett, interesting to see how the well constructed the base was compared to the sides, a bit of craft in the construction back in the day, how does the water taste in the new tank? Glad that it all worked out so well, back to the day job now for you no doubt.

Thanks Darryl. The water trucked in definitely tastes and smells different. It is treated so you can really taste the chlorine. The tank was probably built in the late sixties so 50 years of service is really good Brett

Hey Brett, so that means that you are not connected to the mains water and that you have to order water regularly? Great video

No one in our community has town supply. We all catch water off the roof. We have only bought water 3 times in the last 19 years. ( my Scottish heritage?) others buy three lots in a summer Glad you enjoyed

Who needs a gym membership when you can bust up concrete by hand for a living? Sorry you had to go through this process but I get the necessity part of it. Hopefully the new tank will last for many years. I’m mystified that the city has never connected you to the infrastructure after all these years. Are you on a septic tank as well or are you connected to a public sewer system? Guess you better sell some bowls Brett! Take care!

Thanks Stuart The lack of infrastructure is probably a. Hang over from the days when our community was a holiday destination full of holiday homes. Not the 44th biggest suburb in Auckland ( yes I checked google). We don’t even have curbing on our side of the street The good news is the sewer system is council controlled so no septic tanks which is a blessing The latest approved change will see an additional 5,000 houses built. I believe they will be on a community bore. Thanks again Stuart Brett
