Charge cord theft alert is a setting you can turn off in the settings. Also your car has passive lock tuned on. Which is why it locks when you close the doors. On the center console press config and play around in there.

Love my 2013, I have 329K miles on mine doing food deliveries. Very strong car, solid. Weakness of the car is axles if you regen and accelerate around corners all the time and the lock/unlock buttons on the door handles do eventually fail so i try to use the fob because that is cheaper to replace. I do wish Brian Batista or Monroe Lee King would come up with a plan for a new cell chemistry suitable for the battery packs and tricking the BMS. Hopefully we'll find a solution before all Volts get sluggish from internal resistance. I use hold mode keep it at half-charge. HID headlights, DRL Mod and reverse LED is gr8

The difference between sport mode and normal mode is that sport mode doesn't engage the clutch between the two motors so only the large motors is used to propel you - this is the only way to get the full power output of the car. In normal mode it will engage the clutch between the two motors so they spin together. This is more efficient but power output is limited. Try it yourself. Set cruise control to 55-60MPH on a level surface and after a couple seconds mash the accelerator, it will take a second or two before you actually start going faster because it has to unbind the motors first and then the large motor is used to accelerate you. Also the Volt gets nowhere near 50-60MPG. You'll get around 35 with regular and 40 with premium. I've still averaged around 900MPG on my last tank and I'm on only my second tank of the year this far.

Nonsense... _Sport_ mode is simply a throttle mapping change and less steering assist, *nothing else* . MG1 and MG2 work together for more efficiency at higher speeds in _all_ modes. If you want to learn, see: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lqWBlbuRdcmXmtY.html

@@awebuser5914I've owned the Volt for two years and use sport mode regularly. Yes, sport mode does remap the throttle and make it more sensitive. But I've also noticed that I don't have to wait for MG1 and MG2 to decouple as often as it happens in normal mode. The MGs still do lock up in sport mode but less often compared to in normal mode.

It's not true that the gas engine never drives the wheels. There's a planetary gear system to engage the engine to the wheels when the battery is depleted and you're doing 70mph or over. The extra complexity was deemed worth it for significant fuel efficiency gains under that specific circumstance. If you camp in it, there's a popular easy mod to add a 110v socket and inverter under the trunk floor, up to 1500w. The Volt has a lot of spare power to give without draining the starter battery, so long as the car stays on. You can see that on my channel, it's tremendously useful for doing energy intensive tasks outdoors like running a bucket heater for a camping shower, induction cooktops, basically no limits

I love auto reviews. First car I was ever driven in was a late 50's Chevy Nomad, which my folks sold three years after I was born, in '64. My first car was a red '86 Nissan Sentra Wagon, the only car with a carb I ever owned, and on the way home descending the Sierras into the CA Bay Area, I got close to 42 mpg, though that hypermileing went down when I added aftermarket A/C to move to Arizona and to impress my wife on her honeymoon, lol. I gave up driving some years ago because I am retired and have no need for a gas guzzler. But I've been thinking if I move from Phoenix, where I have easy access to the public transit and light rail, I'd buy a used Volt and I have started looking at reviews like yours. An Empty Nester and an apartment liver now, and seeing gas rise above the sub $1.00 prices they were when I first started driving, the idea of the Volt is appealing, since most retirees use their cars rarely. Whole reason I gave up my last car, which was a small Chevy Sedan, was I was going weeks w/o driving it and did not feel what I paid for insurance justified keeping it parked as a paperweight. Finally--when you finish college, you will have a great career. I worked teaching business systems and systems installations, and the way you relate what people need to know about what you were reviewing here was top notch, interesting and humorous, every bit as good as Jay Leno or Doug Demuro, another ambassador of auto reviews. From the first arguments over what color to decorate one's significant other's Egyptian Chariot, transportation has amazed and has transformed and we live in a time where it has exploded all over the world. So old dudes like me, or interested young folks like my daughter, gravitate to people like you who can share a bit of fun, and knowledge, making us enjoy learning which is what us human carbon units, and our pets, must do every day.

4:00 You can increase the performance of the vehicle by giving it the software that the Cadillac ELR has! This way the engine in the electric motor power can combine for increased performance instead of more just relying on electric. It also boosts electric power somewhat. Brian Batista has managed to go way beyond this with his hacking like 250 horsepower plus..

It reduces the issues of range anxiety, but gives people vehicles with some electric only range. I drive a used 2nd gen Nissan leaf. Sometimes people need additional range. That and car manufacturers aren't as interested in making lower end EVs (I'm looking at you Nissan; You could of made a good third gen Leaf if you tried!!).

technically in the 1st gen only, the gas engine can directly power the wheels. this happens through some of the clutch packs that lock up in different driving conditions, and it just so happens that in hold mode with range remaining, on flat ground at speeds between 58-64 mph, one of the sets of planetary gears has the right gear ratio to almost perfectly match the rotation of the tires to the engine, and the car should spend most of its time sending a majority of the output torque from the drive shaft directly to the wheels which gives you about 10-15% more efficeincy compaired to sending the power directly to the electric motor. the 2nd gen was a big cost saver and they did not do this. they also didnt want to spend the extra 50-100$ for the "expensive" large gears in the transmission, and went with a CVT style metal chain which has orders of magnitude more friction. actually the batterys really didnt change much between the years also, it was just done in software limitations to look like they made improvements. as a result the gen2's have significantly more battery degradation over time. everything in the gen2 was done more cheeply. gm lost something like 30k on each gen1 and around 10k on each gen2.

To counter degradation, you can have the dealer attempt to balance the cells, or before you go to the dealer, run down the battery to near zero ... and run it up a decent sized hill (or do some hard accelerations to get it to display the "Propulsion Power Reduced" message. Then give it a full charge. This will usually unlock a few tenths of a kWh in range.)

Might I be the 348th commenter to say, "Yes, it is a hybrid"? In other words, yes it operates "in parallel" - with the engine driving the wheels mechanically. The Voltium transmission locks up above a threshold speed (if below a torque demand limit). Many sources say this only happens in the 2nd generation car, but that's incorrect according to the actual engineers who designed it. The urban myth that it's "series/REx only" seems to stem from some badly-worded marketing blurb released at the time.

@@ElectrekGarage Silly me. 1KWH. The volt locks out the bottom 30~ percent of the battery as a buffer. The motor can only output 50kw of power. If you floor it or go up a hill you'll notice it peaks above that sometimes. The buffer is there for such situations. The reason you get the extra usable capacity is because that's what the Cadillac ELR does. That's what the tune does is transfer setting from that car.

@@ElectrekGaragealso in the video you talk about expanding the battery capacity. The community around it online also has a process to install a second battery pack in the truck. No trunk space but 60 mile range.

BTW - Ampera owners test this more than Volt owners - you can go 101mph in EV mode before the limiter kicks in.

@@danwat1234 WatchJRGo did the firmware hack ... I still wonder what the true top-speed limit of the Voltec 1 drive train is. I know the large motor can spin up to 6,500rpm below ~70mph before the planetary gear set spins the big motor down, while the smaller (dual-purpose) generator/motor spins up during highway driving. That said, what would happen after the hack, if the ICE motor tried to kick on at ~122mph (JR's maximum EV speed achieved before he had to slow'er down while driving in "Mexico" ;) I have no doubt the electric motor bearings can handle that speed and beyond (especially if both motors are doing the work at reduced rotational speed than what large motor does at below 70mph) - BUT - not sure what would happen if hybrid mode was engaged during a sprint like that (like switching into Hold or Mountain mode at that speed). I believe the smaller motor also acts as a starter for the ICE engine under normal circumstances. The ICE engine's (A14XFL (LUU)) operating range tops out at 4800rpm and there are points where its driving the wheels in lock-step with the smaller electric motor. There's really no data out there except people doing trial-n-error, but you can bet GM knows those figures :)

Here are some realities. As with any EV batteries (especially these archaic first-gen), depletion is a mofo, especially (as usual) in the winter. I get maybe 25-30 on a good day of charge - 2nd gen is the way to go, with newer batteries and extended range. Oh a a cooler looking speedo battery screen. Sorta like it's waaaaay overpriced sibling the Cadillac ELR. Yep, an $80k Volt with a Cadillac CTS body. Gas mileage? Not so great either. I just did a tune-up of the "generator" and with the required high-octane gas (econobox I need to get 91+ octane gas!!??) I average 32mpg. Drive it like grandma and ever so light on the pedal, 34/35mpg. Sport mode does make a noticeable difference; wakes the car up from a slumber. Super fast? Um by no means, however, the instant torque does make it feel fast.

It is a pure series hybrid. The most efficient type of plug in hybrid. Very few ever built. I've used 33 gallons of gas in the last 18,800 miles because it is my second car. I've owned it 12 years and will probably never get rid of it. The new Prius is a series parallel hybrid. Uses more gas.

Sorry. A series plug in hybrid is always driven by the E motor. When out of E, the generator spins up and provides electricity to the E motor. The generator never drives the car.

If you are looking into buying the Volt (i recommend you do), go watch another review, because this one is pretty bad. I guess he had it for just a couple of days. Anyway, i'm super excited for the battery upgrade. Not that i need it, my 2012 battery still does 55km of dynamic driving.
