Nostalgic Scenes At Waterloo - 4VEP 3417 'Gordon Pettitt' Returns To The Mainline - 27/1/24
Turning the clock back nearly 20 years as for the first time since 2005, a MK1 EMU once again graced the platforms of London Waterloo.
Owned by the Bluebell Railway and under the custodianship of the Southern Electric Traction Group, 1967 built 4VEP which has spent many years under restoration at Strawberry Hill depot, was finally set free for a trip to Waterloo on a cold January day.
The occasion was to celebrate the 88th birthday of Gordon Pettitt, the well respected former Southern region manager, which 3417 is named after.
In this short video we see the action and enjoy the sounds of a past Waterloo, as 3417 is brought into platform 19 for an hour.
Unfortunately the unit is not currently fitted with On Train Monitoring Recording or GSM Raidio, which meant that two class 73's would haul the unit top & tailed.
Fittingly 73109 'Battle of Britain 80th Anniversary' one of the former South West Thunderbird locos, would haul the consist to Waterloo and 73119 'Paul Taylor' would then take the set back to Strawberry Hill.
A very enjoyable morning and brought back memories of riding these units in their final years and certainly look forward to its future outings.
I do apologise for the shaky video, owing to not being a good idea to bring the tripod out on this occasion. So everything is hand held and very cold

Once apon a time my daily commute to Waterloo..... happy days..
What a lovely sight, a proper train at Waterloo again.
It was great to see 3417 back on the mainline again and all the hard work that has been put into restoring the VEP @ Strawberry Hill depot, back to service is much appreciated by us all! Have good memories of my visits to work @ Fullwell TP Hut back in the day, including many standbys for the MITS system mods that was installed on the DC CBs to allow testing of the first regenerative braking trains between Strawberry Hill and Shepperton! Its also good to see 3417 named after Gordon Pettitt, the inventor of the Network Southeast brand back in the day! I do enjoy watching your videos Alex!
The Unit looks utterly amazing.
Also nice to see that they've updated the nameplates on 73109 (it was originally 50th anniversary)
Nice to see Gordon Pettitt there to see the 4VEP named in his honour. He was the guy in the wheel chair. He was also General Manager Southern Region(BR) in the late 1980's
All involved should be so proud! Fantastic work!
I was there that morning, saw it at Clapham Junction and then followed it back to Waterloo. Wish I'd known they'd take the 73 off for photos, I would've planned the whole thing around that.

Solid plan. Thing is I still had no idea why it was even there in the first place, I didn't know until way too late that you could go up Platform 18 to see it on 19. You probably saw me as it was leaving half running up the platform to get a shot of the rear 73, only good shot I got all morning.
WOW, how amazing to see the 4 VEP in action on the main line with Class 73s. Excellent video 👍

I like MK1 EMUs, especially 4VEPs

As a child of the Western Region, I'm fond of them too. However I do have a soft spot for the 4 CEP units that were on the Kentish express services.
Yet another terrific performance - well done! I have just listened (again) to you playing in Blackburn Cathedral - excellent. Look forward to your next recitals with eager anticipation.
It's about bloody time too! Was wondering when they'd decide to do this!

I'm pretty sure they've wanted to do this for a long time, but obviously the unit wasn't ready. You can help out with its future if you want, speed things up for you. www.gofundme.com/f/Returning-3417-to-the-Mainline?fbclid=IwAR30nmMjDuTVvCs0j4s74OxIRdfhXODcE4QNouBI909tdZDpKuqkNPRaVJE
I was there it was really good to see it
Well done,
Fantastic video! I wish I'd known about this, ah well, would be amazing to see it one day, I wonder if they would consider repainting it into Network South East livery? That would be amazing if that was to happen.

It'll be staying in this livery, but there's a 4CIG under restoration that'll be NSE. I'm sure the next time 3417 is out, they'll be an announcement.

@04clemea ah OK, wonderful!❤😮, where is the unit that's going to be in the NSE livery? On what railway is it based? Hopefully, I won't miss it next time.
Psst - typo in Paul Taylor's name. 😉 Had a lot of professional dealing with Paul at GBRf over the years. 🙂

Are they planning on using it for tours? There's a lot of doors that would need fitting CDL to! 😁

Yes they plan on using it for tours. They have several ideas for how to work the CDL and how many doors they will fit, the rest will be locked out of use.
Can this train run under its own power unit, or does that 73 have to accompany it everywhere?

@@04clemea "Unfortunately the unit is not currently fitted with On Train Monitoring Recording or GSM Raidio..." That doesn't tell me that the train has no traction motors.

@@Jack_Warner it can happily run under it's own power, it's just not fitting with the OTMR/GSMR to be let loose by itself.

Who'd have thought eh? 😁😁
Why’s it not running under its own power? Not yet certified to do so?

@@04clemea ah I see, no GSMR or OTMR fitted yet
Whilst may despised the 3+2 seating, First class in a 4 VEP was quite comfortable - as long as there wasn't a draft through the door. 🙂 4 VEP history is covered by BloodandCustard. ⚡
