Have you tried Pocket City 2 a better city builder than City Skylines 2

Some tips from a veteran of the game: 🚂 You don't need to send trains to a depot to clone them - you can clone a train that is out and running. (If you hold Ctrl when you Clone then the trains will have shared orders, so you can update one train's orders and all the ones that have a shared set will be updated automagically) 🚂 Fast trains make a lot more money than slow trains (although that varies by cargo, in one of the menus there's a payment rate chart and you can see how the income for different types of cargo drops over time). Using a 40mph tank engine over long distances when you've got faster trains available is never a good idea! Likewise adding so many extra carriages to your Manley-Morel DMU will really slow it down, those trains aren't designed to pull a load of carriages, 1 or 2 at most. 🚂 Towns don't start to accept goods until they have a few large buildings like shops and offices - houses alone won't. 🚂 Your chain of farm traffic is inefficient - better to link all of the farms directly to the main hub station. Also note that you're getting differential build up of grain and livestock, because each wagon can transport more grain than livestock, so you want to ensure that the wagons are balanced to the demand. 🚂 Depending on your options setup, trains can't turn 90 degrees if you have two diagonal tracks at right angles, which is why they sometimes weren't going where you expected. Also if you tell a train to go to a depot after it has already "reserved" a route to the next signal _past_ the depot then it won't change its plans and go in. 🚂 You may find it easier to use the "remove" tool for roads and railways rather than the bomb, that allows you to remove individual segments from a tile _but leaving other segments intact,_ rather than nuking the lot and having to rebuild.

I'll tack on a couple extra tips: Leave a gap in front of your stations before the crossover and put a signal in front of each platform (facing the platform). This helps multiple trains use the station at the same time especially when you're using both ends of the platforms. The train shouldn't be waiting at 26:45 as it has a clear path to a platform When placing signals, start at the end of the track and place them going towards the beginning. This puts a signal just before the junction, a safe place to wait. Then check the beginning of the track and make sure that if a train stops at the first signal it won't be occupying the junction Not sure if you're making use of it off screen, but there's a vehicle replacement utility that lets you change one model for another. It's in the manage list drop down on any vehicle list.

An exception though, is the One Way Ro-Ro station; where it is as, or more, efficient to have path-signals (one-way signals) just for the exits. So a four track One Way Ro-Ro station will have five signals, one at each station platform exit, and one at the entry. This signal can be the same path-signal, or the dedicated entry-signal. Stations and depots do have "built in" signals, of sorts, which can explain some unexpected behaviors. E- Entry signal (a path-signal also works) S- Station P- Path-signal (one way signal) b- block-signal, every sixth* square (* depending on train length) /-----SSSSSP-----\ /-------SSSSSP-------\ >----b----b----E/---------SSSSSP---------\P---b----b----b----> For dedicated pick-up one way Ro-Ro stations, ie coal stations ;-) , I do the following: (if terrain allows) -----------b+\+-------b------P\Depot1 ( the +\+ represent a bridge on the inbound track to Depot1) \--PSSSSS\ \PSSSSS-\ >---------b------b------b------P\Depot2 (as the design would clog up with trains waiting to enter one depot, I seperate the station into two track platforms, each with a depot.) (with standard 12 sqr max station size, you can have four of these. I then divide the trains with orders to go to Depot1, 2, 3 and 4 resp.) Along the route, I don't have (m)any depots, so I do not "let" the trains decide when to service. As you can see, the tracks "force" the train to enter the depot to get to the station. This will service the train (no service order required, though for clarity I usually put the depot as a destination in the orders list, which also prevents the train to enter any depots along the route for service), and make it as ready as possible for a long haul. Except if there is a looong wait for a full load. Then I order the train into a depot after loading. The idea is that the train runs the whole route without depot stops. This works best later the game when travel time for long routes are shorter. I usually place a depot after the receiving station, with an order to service there. So in early game, the train is serviced before each run in both directions. Later I remove the depot at the receiving station from the orders list, as the return time is usually short enough to not see any break down. Using path-signals (one way signals) on one way tracks is a waste of money, use ordinary block signals instead. Path-signals should be used when there is a path to _choose_ . And block-signals are not only cheaper, they don't "labour" the computer as much. Each time a train approaches a path-signal, a more extensive subroutine is executed to determine if there is a viable path. This subroutine is not performed for the block-signals, it only checks if the block is empty. If you have a thousand path-signals, and a few hundred trains... it makes a noticable difference, depending on the computer, of course. When I stopped using path-signals everywhere, I noticed a difference at the end game.

+ use the autobuild tool so you can just drag you track in the direction you want to build, no need to click diagonal tracks, straight tracks etc.

Yeah, I played the original game, then Deluxe when that came out, and I've been playing OpenTTD intermittently since the relatively early days of that project. Chris Sawyer really hit the ball out of the park when he created that game...

I played the original MS-DOS version. I remember getting it for Xmas at my grandparents. They didn’t have a pc so I read the manual cover to cover waiting patiently to get home and play it. I lost my mind when I found OTTD was out, and on Mac no less. I played it so much during university I basically have a Ba in OTTD 😂😂

My addiction got started with Railroad Tycoon on the Amiga.

Don't put the crossover right outside the station, put it 1 tile away, then place signals adjacent to and facing the station (use the ones that can be passed on the wrong direction). Also, you can save a lot of time using the auto track (press a) instead of constantly clicking to change the track piece direction. In this video you have a pointless transfer station (the was originally a farm there but it closed down) Finally, your DMU is likely struggling with too much load. Max 2 carriages to be added to that DMU, preferably none, add additional DMUs or use a loco instead. (the DMU can be modified to take mail instead so you can still have a mixed train Many many more tips can be given

This one and Sim City 2000 were one of the best games of my childhood. Both have such a nice soundtrack too.

BRILLIANT!!!!! I've played this for ages, since the time it first came out in the 90s to present day in this format. One tip: To build up money quickly, keep taking the offers up for subsidies on passenger routes, linking place A to place B. Use buses to set up the route as the cheapest outlay. Subsidies pay out high rates for a set time period, which if you get quite a lot going at once, will really get the money rolling in. It also helps if the two places are fairly close together, less distance, quicker funds arrive.

Instantly transported to my childhood! This and rollercoaster Tycoon were amazing

As a veteran player since the OG Transport Tycoon came out in 1994 (prompted learning DOS commands as a kid!) I can say the age-old strategy of starting with slow coal and mineral trains is a guaranteed money maker early game. Love the game, still, and have played it with my brother and friends many times. With mods it's so much fun too! Something like a colliery line doesn't need to be double-tracked, you'll get by on single track with passing sidings and signals at each end of these, as each additional track piece and signal costs money to maintain which eats into your profit early game too. You can always double-track a line later when demand and capacity demands it. You're correct in placing another type of station next to an existing one will merge them, again saving costs and time of the goods trans-shipping between two stations of the same industry.

I have this on my constant playlist. Dad taught me how to play it and he spent many a day absolutely teaching me that parents have no issues with buying out their kids if they have more money than them. Thanks for playing this and enjoying it.

Love this game, have played it so much! One tip for train stations: add one unit of track attached to the station with a light before the switch, then another unit with a light immediately after. Allows trains to choose the empty track in the station to load/unload, or go to the depot.

OpenTTD!!! So glad that TTD still exist. Still have it installed and played… I like to start the game from the smallest town, and help it grow to be a giant city. Would love to see your gameplay. We play the game so differently. I do have multiple trains in a line but i save up money by making only 1 tracks with several splitters to make sure that non of them collided. Oh as a tip: you can order a group of your vehicles using the vehicle list window to change to a different one. So you don’t need to change each one of them

Two little tips for station rating: 1. Make sure there is a train always loading. When cargo is waiting on the platform it decreases rating. 2. Maximum speed of the vehicle also affects station rating. That means slow trains won't achieve the rating that we want. So you would do better with faster trains. Once you will have a lot of money you may buy a statue of company owner in town that the station is assigned to. The statue will give you 10% additional rating. Edit: transferring cargo to station with primary industry usually results in terrible rating and eventual closure of that industry so I wouldn't recommend that.

Replacing vehicles etc: OpenTTD has some features the original TT did not have. You can mass replace trains, vehicles, etc from the menus, and you can start them from the depot overview instead of clicking on the train and then its window. It has a lot of little additions that you only find in the manuals, they were patched into it from the TT reverse engineering.

Yeah, OpenTTD kept the core gameplay of the original, but massively improved the UX with all those little shortcuts...

Blast from the past! I remember and played the original by Chris Sawyer back in mid/late the 90's !

I love OpenTTD, if you are interested there are plenty of mods where they can add British trains and vehicles, as well some people have made 4k x 4k UK map. Also when you want to get rid of track, I would suggest the bulldozer icon as using the explosives can lower your popularity when near towns. With the bulldozer icon to work you need to select the type/angle track/road. Also in the vehicles list showing your fleet you can replace a specific train to a new one and then they go to the depot when there is enough money.

Well this video is fun to see. I come back every year or so for a big session on OpenTTD. It is fun to see you play it even if it feels you are playing fast and loose with the game and have totally different rail setup to me with the transfers! I had never thought to take the approach that I was going to build a city up in terms of numbers, they all look like small spread out towns on my game. It is the weekend now and I may be about to lose some of it playing this! (if I can give the PS4 version of cities skylines a break)

Love Transport Tycoon. I played so much of this game in the 90s, from when the OG Transport Tycoon came out. Always hits me in the feels.

I am now 37 years old, I have hands down never found a game that I like more than TTDX.🤝But I've worked in transport/logistics management my whole career, so it might be an "interest" thing 😅

Uh, I remember the original release of this game. The depth of the train signal system is just mind boggling. Simulations like this just don't get made anymore. Good times back in the day.

The signals in the original were much less sophisticated... that's one aspect which has been massively improved in OpenTTD...

Love to see some OpenTTD! I have been playing it on and off since the original in the 90s (I should still have TTO with the Mars graphics somewhere in the attic). Hope to see another one, and I recommend using keyboard shortcuts (unless you really like the mouse)

This is pure nostalgia for me and I still play it every now and again 👍 You need to distance the cross sections of track a little from the terminals so you can set a path signal right in front of the platform, that way the trains do not have to wait like they do at that farm transfer station

I've loved this game for longer than I can remember. Glad to see it get some love from Biffa.

Not played tad before but loving this! Two major draws for me : 1. The windows 3.11 vibe (not as good as amigaDos vibe but …. ) and it’s actually available on IOS ! I can play sat on the settee in the lounge… brilliant. Thanks Biffa, keep up the good work ( I’m an espresso drinker in the morning but it’s Peach Iced Tea all year round for me the rest of the day )

2 things: - Why did you build Ceeness East? It's a 4 track station in the middle of nowhere, just to transfer cargo between two trains... - If you build the rail crossing directly next to the station then the crossing and the entire station will be a single zone, so a second train can't enter even if there is room. You need to put 2-way signals between the station and the rail crossing to have it function as intended.

The farm near the station disappeared. If you check the ticker at the bottom of the screen at 22:02, it says imminent closure.

@@abygailgeurtsI know, but Biffa was so focused on getting stuff from other places to that station specifically for transfer, he didn't notice that there is nothing around the station anymore, and it has become unnecessary and useless!

Ahhh... nostalgia... :) You could make a bit bigger map, this one is going to get tight quickly. You can copy one vehicles orders to other - start planning route and just click on vehicle which already have desired route. Tredingbury with 363 population was too small to accept goods at start. If I remember well, you don't have to send vehicles to depot to clone it (should work like with orders, but I haven't played OTTD for few years so I may be mistaken here).

Oh god, I absolutely love TTD. One of my first games ever, I was so young, that I had no idea how the world works. It was such an epic feeling when my first bus rolled and got some bucks. I'm sure it had a positive effect on my personal development. Glad it's still alive. ❤

One of the important things is to get a good transfer rating, so having a train wait for goods will increase the amount of goods your platform will receive. So having a train in queue while one is delivering it, will help greatly. Hope that makes some sense.

Although I enjoy your CS content (particularly CS1/New Tealand!) I'm loving your game variation with Timberborn and now this... keep up the grand work Biffa!

Some tips: You can use the number row to easily select an option on the building screen. For example when having rails open 1,2,3,4 switch between the different tracks. If you want a lot of output from somewhere make sure a train is always waiting. This will increase output a lot (at least on mines, but I assume other producers as well).

I can offer a small tip that station types can be combined, such as putting a bus stop right beside a train station. It's nice for increasing the service area of the stations

Biffa! You can upgrade all vehicles on the manage vehicle menu, as to upgrade the engines when a newer one becomes available/the old ones start to break down. You can also do it with the trucks/busses

Gee whiz where my city building began, on my 486dx100 pc linked up by network cable playing against my mate, who had to bring his whole pc over every time lol - that huge monitor taking up the back seat of his car - we had some battles!

What a game! Love it. Sometimes I get the urge to jump in and spend hours on it
