I would love to see a three-paneled comparison between similar scenes from F.W. Murnau's original "Nosferatu: Ein symphonie des grauens" (1922), Werner Herzog's remake "Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht / Nosferatu the Vampyre" (1979), and E. Elias Merhige's "Shadow of the Vampire" (2001).

Nosferatu has one of the most insane and impressive meta-narrative journeys in the history of cinema. Begins as an unofficial adaptation of the Dracula novel with the names of characters altered. Has legal trouble and almost every copy is destroyed. The novel is then officially adapted as a Hollywood film almost a decade later Then Nosferatu is remade in the 70s, this time USING the official character names from the novel upon which it was unofficially based on Then in 2001 they make a "Movie about making a movie" focused on the film but with a twist which is still ACTUALLY being about a vampire killing people. Now in 2024 the original film is getting a direct remake...over 100 years later.

There's definitely a Klaus Kinski influence there, even some mannerisms from the Herzog remake made it into Dafoe's performance. It's not exactly a bad thing though, both Schreck and Kinski were iconic in that role, so why not. Dafoe added something from himself as well, took a very difficult, culturally charged role and made it his own. I'm a big fan of this film.

In my estimation, "Shadow of the Vampire" is one of cinema's great embarrassments. It makes a legitimate biopic of Morneau's life impossible after this cornball cartoon with fantasy embellishments that were completely unnecessary. Whoever made the decisions concerning this film, as was the case with "Mommy Dearest", chose drastically wrong. Poor Udo Keir...standing there with nothing to do but mug while having portrayed one of the most interesting vampires of all time. Why to any of this?

Secondly, I'm not sure what happened to spellcheck but it wasn't caught there either. Most people I talk with in professional show biz have never heard of him or this film. I use it as an example of poor acting/director choices. Thirdly, having been in show biz over 40 years, rarely do people spell my name, the movie title, the name of the production company right, especially college-educated reporters with a press release in their hand. Thank you for that catch. I will spell his name right when I make my film about the man's experience of being homosexual during WW2, being trapped in a fox hole while his dead lover lay rotting a few feet away.
