Norwich E-Bike ride - 29 miles range test. Some great views, moans, chat & my poor riding 🙄

Longest ride so, far, 29 miles withe lots of chat about cycling lanes and what works and what doesn't. Norwich has invested millions in cycle lanes and some of it seems useless and other parts seem brilliant.

The chat along the way includes a discussion on energy use and range of the Haibike 630wh Trekking 6 in Eco, Standard and High modez
After 29 miles I had 32% indicated battery left which was enough for 16 miles on my last trip.
As an older less fit rider the idea of this video is to share the ability do the Ebike to help people ride further, enjoying cycling again when they might otherwise have given up like I had.
To my surprise I'm planning my next trip already to the beach and have confidence the Haibike will get me there and back on relative comfort and ease.
Electric assisted bikes are definitely advancing our options for mobility and transport and the Haibike Trekking range from Smilebikes over in Langley/Chedgrave are a brilliant, quality option

Brilliant entertaining video. More of the same please. Used to work in Norwich in the early 1980s, to great to see some familiar places.

Why don't you try to arrange an interview with the guy who's responsible for bike lanes in Norwich to get their view? It'd be interesting, and the lessons could be applied across every town.

You are a braver man than me. We got two folding E-bikes last year & so far have only used them once🚲Hopefully we will use them a bit more this year when the weather gets better - I'm not up for bad weather riding. My wife is not a confident rider so no riding on the road for her. That's why I got folding bikes (quite heavy) which I can get in the back of the estate car. This allows us to head off to a spot with cycle paths or a lake / reservoir where we can avoid any vehicles altogether. Fingers crossed our solar system get installed in March/April. It's been nearly 6 months since we ordered it. Like many others we have experienced delays due to component shortages (batteries) & electrician availability. I think many solar installers now have a backlog of projects running late. Hey ho. Hopefully all will be well & we can start to see a reduction in our energy bills. No EV yet though. I'm waiting for used prices to become more realistic. When we do get one it will be a 2nd car for us to us on local trips only which will get charged at home off the solar / batteries.

Keep left signs are painted on all two way pedestrian/ cycle lanes in Australia so everyone is at least going in the same direction.

Didn't count the EVs but spotted a Morris Minor Traveller. Don't think I've seen one of those on the road up here this century. The completely off road cycling paths are great - in daylight. Old railway lines around here (NE Scotland) great for dog walking but really need resurfacing for cycling - no racing bikes at least.

Interesting video Nigel, interesting how in the UK there is a presumption that cycles on roads is intrinsically quite safe and should be encouraged. In the Netherlands cycle paths are dedicated with cycling on ordinary roads often banned. Having cycled in the Netherlands I don’t cycle on public roads in the UK as cars and bikes don’t mix well and cyclists come off worse when there is contact.

It seems that a part from the Netherlands, every city in this world is designed with cars in mind. And we all pay the taxes to mantain the locations where cars stay parked doing nothing just wasting pavement. I would push cars away from city centers, so people could gather around, enjoy the walk, live the city, get lost safely in streets. Then the cities would be also more clean and healthier too, and a lot less noisier..

I get what you talking about but if you widen a road the traffic moves faster , but must admit I generally use the road as get annoyed by the way they make you stop and start on the cycle ways at every crossing

It's a conundrum, safety or speed.. Personally speed is good as it avoids congestion keeping traffic slowing smoothly and efficiently. Speed should be monitored by cars themselves in my opinion but some would Say that's big brother gone mad. Policing speed more effectively would help normalise lower speeds and safety. Narrowing roads isn't a wise solution imo

A 29 mile ride seems like a lot for someone that does not ride regularly. Riding for 5 or 10 miles several times a week might be healthier. Ebikes are bringing many older adults back to cycling. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so older adults and children can ride a bicycle safely. Bicycles are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Cities need to do more to make cycling more attractive and safer. Children would be much healthier if they rode a bicycle to school instead of being driven in a car.

Always be considerate of other people on the road or pathway. Pedestrians walking, other cyclists or motor vehicles. You seem to be in such a hurry that you are not taking time to enjoy the ride and the view. Slow down a little before a pot hole sneaks up on you and ends your riding career. Enjoy the journey and share the road.

Considering this bike is claimed to be able to do 80 miles, I find this test coupled with the initial ride home to be very concerning. Your first trip home, it showed 24 mile range, yet it was on 1% showing zero range after 14.7 miles. This trip now, you have 30% battery after 29 miles. In both cases, it appears you kept it in standard mode and it didn’t appear like you were pushing it hard really at any point. I have a 1000 watt bike with 4 inch off-road tyres and a smaller battery that can easily hit 50 miles if kept on a medium setting. I suspect the screen is draining a significant amount of that battery. In fairness, all manufacturers lie about the range but given this bike is marketed as a “long range” version, I think it’s a very poor choice.

In fairness I'm twice the size of some tiny riders which will affect range . Over the last year it's been brilliant . I haven't and couldn't ride more than 40 miles in one go so it's perfect . Its definitely capable of 80 miles but obviously not in every situation

@@EVPuzzle fair enough, but for others 30 miles is not that far really. My point is the range is not nearly as good as claimed. For such a small motor and a bigger battery, it’s not very efficient. As I said, that screen looks suspect to me.

@@NoelG-IRE as you say quoted ranges are optimal conditions , seeing 100 + range indicated doesn't make me believe it's real

It's the same in Bristol. If you stop people with cars living in the City you devalue there houses straight away. If you charge permits and a lot of money to park you encourage rich People who can afford the permits to park to buy the houses. Everything has consequences. Go live in Holland it's better for cycling. I just get on with it nothing perfect and it will never be perfect. Stop moaning.
