And so did many other nations that had 0 chance against the Nazi's, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium etc. The Netherlands for example shot down 200 German planes in 5 days of war and managed to take 2000 prisoners of war which were taken to the UK. Belgium managed to hold on for 18 days and allowed the French to get their war machine up and running. Many people fled and joined the allies, landing with them on D-Day to retake their homelands.

Denmark could have mounted a much stronger defense, they pretty much gave up Denmark in advance to Nazi Germany. The few brave soldiers that did defend Denmark, did so because the orders to surrender did not reach them in time. They did immense damage to the advance troops though (200 wounded due to their own national machine gun (LMG) the "Madsen" gun). The redeeming quality of the Danes was their resistance movement. They have a great movie about one of them too!

I would however not call it an offensive, given that the Danes did not really resist, the only reasons their border/southern soldiers fought was due to the surrender orders coming late.

@Peter Laughton Germany couldn't get Norway over to their side, because Norway tried to stay neutral, like they managed during WWI. It was pretty much a fluke what side Norway ended on. If the brits had sailed in the fjord instead of Blücher, Norway would surely ended up picking the losing side. Quite many norwegian was also pro-german/anti-communists. Many sadly died in german uniforms, fighting the communists of the day. The soviets DID liberate Finnmark, though. And oddly enough withdrew, and gave the land back to Norway, when it'd be quite simple for Russia to keep it.

A big ine about Narvik is due to arrive in the future. First battle in which paratroopers and supplies were deployed via air, first battle in which a ship and a u-boat were sunk by aircraft, first use of modern landing craft (d-day boats), first major naval battle of the war, first nazi defeat. A very interesting battle indeed. Fun fact: one of the reasons the germans fared so poorly at sea, was due to cosmic radiation and electromagnetic magnetism that is more common in the north (aurora). Much of their fine equipment struggled with this, and torpedoes and seamines with magnetic fuses would malfunction, simply bouncing off british ships in what would otherwise have been a kill.

Actually, yeah. I wrote a essay on school about this, If I remember correct it was the Kopås gun battery, aswell as the Husvik gun battery. Although with much weaker guns, they did heavily damage the ship that came after the Blücher, which is the one seen shot at here. They did not play much of a role though, the two shots seen fired from Oscarsborg festning took out the main battery system on the Blücher, effectively disabling it's heavy guns. The second hit the oil and ammunition storage and you can guess the rest. Though the ship didn't initially sink because of these hits as the Norwegians had hiddden an old and outdated torpedo battery further in, hitting the Blücher twice, one mid-ship doing pretty much nothing, and the other one hitting at the front of the ship, causing it to sink.

Their delay was crucial in making possible to the king and government to leave Oslo and avoid capture. A wermacht detachment commanded by hauptmann Spiller pursued the king and government members but they were ambushed by the norwegians and Spiller was killed. @Hulagu Mongke That's not really the case. The failed neutrality policies of the Norwegian government was the main reason why nothing much happened. That's not to say that a portion of the people didn't view the Germans as just as good as the Brits, but the soldiers had standing orders to fire warning shots and not attack ships sailing in the fjords unprovoked. This was mostly because the politicians assumed that both parties would respect the neutrality. Neither did however the Germans were first to invade. Also the boats sailing towards Oslo was met by met by some resistance prior to the sinking of Blucher. However those batteries, all positioned further out in the fjord, only managed to fire off warning shots and in one case a few misses due to the poor visibility before the ships had slipped past. It's also worth noting that the convoy had sunk a small Norwegian patrol boat earlier which managed to radio an alert that it was under attack by an unknown force. It's not really clear how detailed the knowledge of this was at the batteries at the time as it was likely relayed and not received directly by them.

Blücher before entering the Oslo fjord was first spotted and approached by a Norwegian "squat" patrol ship, which essentially was a non-armored basically repurposed fishing vessel. which spotted and approached them saying something along the line of "who are you?" before getting destroyed by machinegun fire. they did get a message as a warning (this is actually mentioned in several places except in the movie) as well as we did get help by both English polish french troops which did help until they effectively betrayed our trust by retreating (it made perfect sense to do, it was a smart and necessary tactic for them.) but they left without warning or even telling Norwegian high command. resulting in a large push happening from what they assumed to be a controlled area. the greatest effort we ever did was at the end of the war when thousands of German troops were being pulled back to support the fronts in Germany. and we strategically destroyed every possible exit we could to trap and cut off reinforcements to Germany. ofc there is much more to say, I'm prude of the Norwegian spirit and of our achievements

I agree with most of what you said, man. Still in my opinion Norway is a positive example of stiff resistance, of course exploiting the nature and environment of the country. But it's also a question of will and endurance, which Norway had and Holland for example didn't have. The Dutch could have easily flooded their country thus rendering the german armoured and tank divisions useless, this alone could have slowed and perhaps halted the invasion, or it could have turn the invasion of Holland a highly costly one for the Nazis, thus also slowing the smashing of Belgium and France. Sometimes the will and the endurance are critical factors that not all countries had. Norway, despite a lateness in full mobilization, had these qualities, even if obviously they were no match for the German forces.

I've always admired how tiny (is sense of military power) Norway resisted Nazi invasion. In most of the sea cities the Kriegsmarine was met by coastal batteries firing on them (in this video you see the German cruiser "Blucher" hit and sunk while sailing in the fjord to reach Oslo), and after landing on the Norwegian soil several Nazi units fell into ambushes, the most famous was Leutnant Spiller's unit who wanted to capture the king and government but was succesfully ambushed by Norwegian troops that killed Spiller and around a hundred of wermacht soldiers. If I compare with the poor little resistance of Dutch army after Nazi invasion of Holland (though they could have easily flooded the country putting a severe trouble to wermacht tanks and troops) the Norwegian stand among the braves. And not to forget they hanged the traitor Vidkun Kisling.

True but unfortunately in Narvik the local norwegian army commander let the germans disembark the ships undisturbed as he was a supporter of Vidkun Quisling. That was a crucial fact as it severely damaged the British-French-Polish expeditionary forces that were to help the norwegians and try to avoid the whole country being occupied.

Norway still had a monarchy which is one of many reasons they did not accept Nazism. The political structure of the Nazi regime is a socialistic one. Which means no monarch. But many Norwegians were still loyal to the King. Rather than change of government to elect the leader, they wanted to preserve their monarchism.

It´s called «Kongens Nei» or «King´s Choice». It´s about the frist dans og the German invasjon og Norway and how the Norwegian King refused to accept nazi Germany´s “offer”. The King took his family and fled to England. From there, he led the Norwegian resistance until Norway was free.

Telephone Tough Guy yeah way to show your ignorance. In the south, only a small, untrained and under-equipped British force was sent in against the Germans. THEY were steamrolled. The Norwegian forces still gave them hell every step of the way up the valleys of southern Norway. The north is a different story. British and french and polish forces took Narvik. The Germans took it back. Allied forces took all the areas surrounding Narvik (norw. ski troops played a crucial role), and then they took the city. Only, the brits and french buggered off after that. So yeah, Narvik got kind of «steamrolled». Not so much as for rest of Norway, at least not like Denmark

I've often heard said, "you can't imagine what it's like to face an enemy insanely committed to a cause or flag," you have to experience it." I would not doubt this in the least when life don't mean nothing! Mohamed Ali, said once in answering a question pose to him, you don't fight Latino fighters. They fight for God, fight for Mama; and fight for flag." These kids were facing a mighty lion, the German military machine. Those who fell in battle, on both sides, are forever young." Enjoyed you flick!

In trying to control Norway, germany garrisoned it with over 300,000 troops. (Thats one german soldier to each 10th norwegian civillian) Even despite this, they were never able to deal decisive blows against Norway's resistance groups, and on victory day in europe, Norways resistance and goverment accepted the surrender of 400,000 german service personell. That's mind blowing.
