@@Peetreesaur Same with me - when I went to university in MI, people made fun of my Southern drawl (GA). When I was home, they told me I sounded like a "Northerner," and when I said "eh?" (long a sound), they looked at me askance. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am from the South, but most people think I am from the North or the West Coast because I do not have the typical southern drawl. People always ask me where I am from. When I say I am from the South, they look at me with a shocked look on their faces.

We moved from the pwest coast to the southwest onto Louisiana. Previously I’d been exposed to many languages and foreign accents in my work and had a fairly good ear. The first thing I noticed in my area were different southern accents. Had heard some Cajun that I recognized as semi-French in a Costco (of all things) then heard a language that was presumably English that I couldn’t parse in the same Costco. But I became aware that there were many southern accents in our area. They were all very pretty and expressive. Just as I hope that somewhere in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington we’ll all say warsh (wash), squarsh (squash), and fer (for). I’m glad that we have regional fun with our American language. Even if President Warshintin’ wouldn’t recognized it.

It would seem an enormous waste of effort to continue this ridiculousness when non-southerners aren’t around, but I guess it’s like trying to prove the light goes out when you close the refrigerator door.
