My uncle Calvin Shillal ( Himatoom Siloo ) had a collection of very old recordings of Native singing and songs from the late 1800's to the early 1900's era. In those songs you could hear many animal sound imitations being made during the songs. Coyote howls, bird calls, and other sounds. This old style still is echoed today with whooping and bird caws which are common during pow wow songs. Its as I was recently telling one of my dancer friends: " The songs and dances may be a different than the ancient ones in ways, but the energy that carries the dancers and that resonates through the drums and voices, is the same ancient energy / spirit that carried and resonated through our most ancient ancestors on this earth." I have come to understand the key to dancing and singing is to let the spirit / energy carry you, or as I prefer to say " Get lost in the spirit ".

They dont have to be vets and plus if the did go into the service an were in the infantry most people dye their feathers red to signify they killed in battle. And plus they are earning them by praying and helping the sick.
