Why is it when they get hit they stuck their thumb or hand out the window? And when they get hit and can drive away they just sit their and take the hit? Always wondered haha

Hand outta the window or thumbs is normally letting the Marshall or other driver know that they're OK. Stay in the car and get hit in the car than get out and risk being hit trying to get somewhere safer.
