North Vancouver marina residents say they're blindsided by eviction

Hundreds of people living at a marina community in North Vancouver say they've gotten an eviction notice. The popular marina says it needs to repair docks. As Jon Hernandez reports, residents say they were blindsided and some have nowhere else to go.

It's time for the last generation to realize how lucky they were. Sure, you were frugal, but you could buy a home with 2-3 years gross wages. It's now 10x gross wages on average. So the last generation had the ability to own their own home, then buy second homes as rec property or as investment generating rent. Good luck to this generation.

I’m not one to whine but you’re right. I’m 22 years old. Born and raised in a small town near Ottawa. I’ve been employed steady ever since high school and been living on my own since I was 18. Fast forward to today, I work 40-50 hours a week and make double the minimum wage. My rent is $1240 a month for a tiny one bedroom. I’ve seen hotel rooms that are bigger than my apartment. Also, lately I’ve noticed that just to eat a meal that’s half decent is a minimum $10 every single time doesn’t matter where you go or how you do it. I spend $100 a week on gas to get to work because I can’t afford to live in the city. Approximately every month I pay rent ($1240), gas to get to my job ($400), eat just enough so I’m not starving ($400). Grand total of $2040 a month. But that’s not even all. I have to pay hydro, phone bill and wifi on top of that. I make DOUBLE the minimum wage. I have no kids. I only have to support myself yet I can barely do that. I have almost no social life anymore because I can’t afford it. I wake up, go to work just so I can exist in this world. Not going to lie it’s depressing. I mean what is the point of it all? We just work to survive while somebody more important gets rich. I live the most boring life of a 22 year old so you’d think I could save money but it’s almost impossible. They call my generation lazy but I am doing everything that I’m supposed to be doing but there’s no future in sight. Not in this world.

This is the reason you should never buy property in a lease hold/ Leasedland. Sure, it is about 20-30% cheaper than other properties but since it only has a 100 year validity. There is nothing passed down to the next generation. In my opinion, this is a horrible investment. Would rather rent than own a leased land property. I would only consider it if it was at least 50% below market value properties.

From personal experience I can tell you that float home ownership is not recommended unless you own the land and have the water lease from the Govt. Marinas can and will change their policies regarding float homes at anytime and finding new arrangements, towing etc. is quite difficult. When my GF sold her float home we vowed never to own anything that floats that doesn’t have a motor that you can back out of a slip and go on with your life. I hope the displaced MC residents can find a place to tie up. Good luck.

To the best of my knowledge, boat house's are attached by pilings. Remove those pilings and the structure falls apart. House boats, on the other hand, are allowed to stay because they can be moved for the facilitated renovations of docks.

"Where do I move my half a million $$ property" - had to laugh. I guess that's what people call a "Karen." No offense but these are people who have been living in a dream world. The rug has been pulled out from under millions of other people across Canada for the past 40 years, and those not affected have been completely oblivious and unconcerned about their plight, and still are only concerned about themselves. It will sink in, but sadly from what I've observed, most people like these end up greedily shoving the less fortunate out of their way, displacing and crushing them some more, rather than actually addressing the real problem.

There is "notanother" curve ball to this story for all marina's all over BC: the provincial demand to go green and require upgrades. The oversight gave Sicamous a grand total of TWO YEARS to do it. In our community that means marina owners of cottages on LakeWindermere would have to cut a check for over 50 GRAND. EACH. Many inherited their family cottage and just don't have the cash. They'll be forced to sell their summer cottage for extended family. Others simply have it in their pocket, no prob.
