FWIW. If you have back surgery for PAIN only, the chances for a positive outcome is less than 15%. At the six month point most patients have the same or worse back pain than they started with. Repeat procedures for back pain are even more dismal. The indications for spinal surgery are, loss of bowel and bladder control, muscle wasting, and loss of motor function.

The sad truth is that these are severely injured folks when they arrived at this level of intervention. I am in no position to exonerate the surgeon, but it feels as though the media report failed to balance the story with so much as an implication that these are less than 50/50 cases from the outset.
