NORTH RIM CAMPGROUND Review & Info | GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK North Rim

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is about as remote as it gets when it comes to National Parks in the Southwest. To get the most out of your visit, you'll certainly want to spend a night or two. Your options are fairly limited in the area, and one of the most practical options is the North Rim Campground. But, is it the kind of place you'd want to stay?

For today's video, we went someplace new to us - the North Rim of the Grand Canyon! We stay at and tour the North Rim Campground and show its many amenities, take a quick hike to Bright Angel Point, and visit the Grand Canyon Lodge.
North Rim Campground is located on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. This lesser-visited side of the Grand Canyon holds great amounts of beauty and is perfect for those wanting to experience a bit more hiking, nature, and quiet than the more crowded South Rim side. Be prepared and plan well as there are fewer facilities and lodging can book up to a year in advance.
Due to the difference in elevation between the North Rim and South Rim, the North Rim has a shorter season - lodging and restaurants are open from May 15th to October 15th - and closes during winter months.
It is said that only 10% of all Grand Canyon visits are to the North Rim which means 90% are missing out on all the beauty that the North Rim has to offer!
North Rim Campground has 90 campsites, all of which have a picnic table and fire ring with an attached grill. Water spigots are conveniently located throughout the campground along with restrooms with running water.

    I worked at the North Rim as a teenager in 1966. I've been back several times, the last was 6/2019. One of my favorites.

    Thank you SOOOO much for checking the Handicap Accessibility, we wish other YTrs would do the same. We travel in a M/H but my wife is a Disabled Veteran and moves in a chair, I was worried about going up there due to accessibility, at least I know she can still enjoy somethings and the View. Our 2 Favorite NPs are Grand Canyon (S. Rim) due to the Paved Trail, and Yellowstone, due to the boardwalks. We've been to 49 of our 50 States and in many NP & SP and have found, even though they say, For the Enjoyment of all people, they really don't mean all people, only the Ambulatory.

    Thanks for checking our video out. 😊 We try to think about all needs when it comes to camping, campsites and parks because we've found some of the same things in the past... You may see an accessible site but the condition isn't the greatest and it always catches our attention. Super happy that we could help out in any way though! And 49 out of 50 states? Congrats! What's the last on the list to conquer?

    @@CactusAtlas It was different this year because of Covid, so they didn't start taking reservations for the summer until January or February (I can't remember for sure). That being said, we were on-line and reserving our cabin the day reservations opened. The system was overloaded and crashed, but thankfully we were able to make our reservation. I just checked their website and the dates are listed for when 2022 reservations will be available. If you plan to go, I would make the reservation the first day you are eligible to. I would try for a rim view cabin as well, but if not available, be sure that you still get one with a porch. It was so nice to sit out in the cool evening air. We were there during the June heatwave so temperatures were near 90 during the day. The cabins aren't air conditioned since they usually do not have temperatures above the 70s. It felt much nicer to sit outside than to be in our cabin. Both evenings we found a spot on the Bright Angel Point Trail to watch the sunset since it was just a short walk from our cabin. And a side note, we hiked the Uncle Jim trail based on your video reccomendation, so thank you for that!

  • @CactusAtlas

    Ahh... Makes sense that reservations would be different. We're still not sure when we'd want to go and that's always the hard part as to timing (and taking off time for making other videos). Still hoping that it pans out some day! Hopefully without a crashing system and that headache. 😅 Happy to hear about the Uncle Jim Trail! Hopefully we helped a bit there.

    I've been to both the south rim and the north rim. The best way to describe and differentiate between the two is this: The south rim is akin to a Disney attraction. It sucks. It's busy, it's crowded and it's hectic. The north rim is heavenly bliss. Enough said.

    Glenn, Just watched your video today (first time). I enjoy your casual, real-life, informative presentation. Thank you. My wife and I stayed at the North Rim Campground last October 2021. Just want to let you know: the "Transept Trail" borders the campground and can be taken directly to the lodge (I think about 1.4 miles each way). You walk safely right along the rim of "The Transept"- a side canyon. Beautiful views, especially in morning and afternoon sun. I did make a family video of the trail; if you would like to see it: KZread-Senior RV Trip 2021 channel. Another note: Thank you for the "Uncle Jim Trail" video you made. I was wondering what that trail was like. If we get back to the North Rim we will do that trail. Ron Federici

  • @CactusAtlas

    @CactusAtlas

    Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! I was there September 24th-26th of 2019. I booked a couple weeks in advance for that particular trip on Recreation.gov, but I tend to notice that things get booked up much further in advance than that, but if you keep checking the site, you will often find people cancel and you can get in. However, with that said, they have a notice right now that due to a waterline replacement project, the sites will be on a first come, first serve basis May 15th - August 31st of 2020, resuming reservations on September 1st through the end of the season, which is October 31st, when they shut down for the winter. There is another nearby campground named Demotte Campground that you can also make reservations for on Recreation.gov that could be a nice fallback, and I plan on camping there and doing a video in 2020 at some point. They usually only open up reservations on Reservation.gov on a 6 month rolling basis, so your best bet for some of those National Parks is to be ready when they open reservations for given campground, and book as soon as you can. We are about to release a website in a couple weeks (will be cactusatlas.com) that pulls in public data from Recreation.gov and other sources that will hopefully help folks with similar questions, so keep and eye out! Recreation.gov is your best bet for now to find the kind of info you are looking for if you have not checked it out yet. Best of luck! You are bound to love it there!

    Great video. Always wanted to stay at the north rim but unfortunately they don’t allow dogs at the lookouts, although they are allowed in the campground. Go figure. I understand not being able to take them down the trails like at the south rim, because of the mules and narrow paths. I subbed.
