North Mode Hand Wing 7.0m | Unboxing - Measurements - Thoughts | Jonathan Reinke

In this video I cover my first eyes on the 7.0m North Mode. I also added some two sessions in thoughts as I am posting this video after a couple of sessions in.
Thanks Seth and Tucker for your help!

Take a watch and let me know what you think. I am also thinking of posting another video on the Mode after 10 or so sessions. Let me know if you would like to hear / see a more in depth video review?

According to the North foils 'open session' videos on YT you should pack the hard handle wings differently. Handles on the outside vs inside. Also when packing LE first in the bag. I also did it the other way, coming from soft handles. ... Having said that... interestingly enough the North hard handle wings come factory packed NOT as shown in the open session videos

Great video Jonathan! If you inflate the strut first and deflate it last you'll have less opportunity for bladder damage. -Tucker

Thanks for the advice Tucker! Does this mean I should fill the whole hand wing up with the strut fill with the connecting hose open? Should I empty the Mode with the leading edge fill / dump and only open the strut fill / dump after the leading edge has had a bit of time to empty? Thanks

@@jonathanreinke9392 I generally leave the "one pump hose" clamped shut and pump the strut first, then LE. The issue you can get is the LE forms before the strut, then the strut end can fold or have a tough time confirming to that radius so it bubbles and bursts. If you pump the strut first you avoid that. Deflating it after the LE does the same thing so it doesn't end up seating strangely at the end of the strut. - Tucker

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the video. So having ridden both the soft handles of the MOJO and the rigid hard handles of the MODE, what would your recommendation be for a beginner?

  • @jonathanreinke9392

Hey Raghu, I have only tried a handful of handwings. The Mode's handles are my favorite. They are easier to do transitions, tricks, learning and low effort to hold onto also. The Mojo's handles are still good and I think above average. So if you go for a Mojo you should be happy with the handles. The Mode hand wing is not rated overall as a beginner hand wing. The reason is because the pull and performance is instant. I am still learning Wing Foiling but my wind watersports background is extensive and the way to handle gusty changing wind is the same. The thing I rilly like about the Mode is if you are on it and know how to quickly change the angle of a wing or sail the Mode is easy and instant to change the power pull and this makes it very easy to handle gusty / unfavorable wind conditions if you are intermediate to advanced level. If you get the Mode as a beginner Hand Wing I would recommend to learn at locations with less gusty wind / longer fetches. Happy water time! 🙂

How's the surf handle on the front, is it stiff and easy to control when riding waves?

Hey Noah, I like the front handle. It is big enough to easily hold onto with gloves and feels stiffer vs other surf handles I have tried. Who knows how it will be after some break in time? From the good things I have heard about the handle and from what I have felt if you spend time using this wing for surfing you will probably like it to. On the first session with this wing when I showed up it was gusting over 30 knots. I was not in the mood to see what the user wind limit was on the water first day. So I decided to fill up the wing and in the Lake Ballinger park I decided to jog into the wind then jump and sheet in. I got a little air and it was fun. When I walked back I used the surf handle and the front of the front hard handle. Both worked great to depower the wing in max / maybe a bit above max wind conditions for the 7.0m and my 165lbs weight. I might have been fine on the water but the cool thing on maybe being overpowered I can just park play and for catching a bit of air having a bigger wing is nice. The wind lessened later and I had a good first session. Anyway ... happy Sunday!

Hello :) could you please tell the wind range for this wing 🙏 I’m 175 lb , 100 liters board, North 2022 foil set with 1850R front wing. Beginner with windsurfing background. Thinking about light wind wing.I live in Miami.

I am just a bit lighter than you at 165 lbs and I have a 88L board. The North Mode greatly benefits from an active fast responding sailing style. The wing has a lot of good power and forward drive. With fast moving arms you can depower this hand wing easily in gusty conditions. There are other wings that handle gusty winds better with little input response ... but those hand wings have a lower overall windrange and lower performance. The ability to pump up to flight in the minimum wind needed is what I call billow. This means each pump of the hand wing builds on the next and adds to the power and reward for lots of cesecutive pups. The Mode has great billow compared to other hand wings avalible. Right now I have the Axis PNG 1150 and ART 1099. When I get better at foot pump foiling I plan to get the PNG 1310. I predict with my North Mode 7.0m the PNG 1310 and my 88L board I will be very satisfied with the minimum wind needed to get to flight. At this future point I if I want to get to flight in less with I would probably get a new style 110L ish downwind foiling board and use it mostly for lightwind wing foiling. A larger handwing would be last on my list if I want to push light wind Wing foiling. For your windrange athleticism and technique will play the biggest part on windrange. For me and my current gear I can get flying in 8 knots of wind and max out at about 24 knots. With a 1310 or downwind board I think I could get flying with much less wind with this hand wing. With more time Foiling on the water and maybe a smaller front wing I believe I could manage if the wind was a bit over 24 knots for a brife portion of the session. Ideally this hand wing is best in 10 - 20 knots of wind ... but so is owning not a ton of hand wings. 😄 Happy shopping!

you may not need any adapters, especially for the WMFG pump

Thanks for the advice. I first tried to fill up the hand wing without adaptors and it works. Closer to 7 psi I need to pump fast as it leaks as I pump. The end on that comes with the WMFG wiggles a bit on the north fill piece. Not ideal but easy to put on and off. As it is getting colder the adaptor that was recommend to use is not getting any easier to put on and take off. So I am on the lookout for another adaptor. Also open to figure out a way for my WMFG pump without adaptor to not leak as I am filling it up. I think pumping fast is overall better than having difficulty putting the pump pieces on and off. Thanks for any other advice. 🙂

Good call. At this time the hose is not leaking, just air is getting past the stock end of the WMFG pump. My pump is a year old or more. I wonder if the current WMFG pumps stock fitting is a perfect match to my North Mode Wing ? 🤔😊
