i was homeless for a few years when i was young, now i been married 15 years,have a couple great kids, and though we are far from rich we have food shelter n the things we need with a little left over. hearing their stories i was thinking damn even when i was homeless i had more to eat than these people. really made me appreciate what i have now.

Every time I watch an interview with a North Korean defector, although they have their freedom now they don’t seem 100% happy and I was always confused. When that guy said although he has a good life in South Korea but still enjoyed his life in North Korea I finally realized it’s because their whole life they lived a very simple (unfortunate to us) one. They didn’t have any views on the outside world and they all lived pretty much the same. No competitions, no social media, no insecurities. just very simple lives. I could see why they might miss that old life. I’m glad they were able to expose themselves to the outside world though.

It is hard for North Korean defectors to have "freedom". They spent their lives in North Korea being told how to live and think from birth. It's a huge adjustment for many.

Don’t forget that many foods were also made by immigrants coming into the U.S, Chinese-American, Italian American, Tex-Mex, they took the best part of each and mixed it together and that foods. So many foods thought as American have roots in other cultures, hot dogs have roots in German culture, Barbecue has roots in Native American culture. American Culture is a mix of everything

I love that the woman on the end is most thankful that her children will grow up free. She gave them an incredible gift.

Your production quality is off the charts- not only the video quality and presentation, but additionally the care put into authenticity. So often I see "X nationality tries BURGERS (or whatever)!!!" and then they bring out a sad excuse for a burger. Watching this I can relax, confident that they are enjoying a true American Thanksgiving.

Not knowing what it was to have anything to feel grateful for, was a touching statement. I am personally grateful for those who escaped from North Korea and are learning what it is to be free. It is sad they are all taught so many things that are not true. For children to be taught hate instead of caring and love of their fellow man, is so sad.

Whatever happened to this wonderful channel? It delivered so hard, with such likeable people, then just disappeared! Unfair, I wanted to watch MUCH more.

These people are truly thankful.... also thankful for eating in a family setting for the first time in 5, 7 years... it's beautiful to see.

Freedom is NOT free. The Service members of the U.S Military have been paying the price all these years. As a Korean American I also had an opportunity to serve In the U.S Army for 7 years going thru the 911 tragedy. It was a very meaning thing to do. God Bless America.

It's really incredible when you realize just how lucky we are to be American. There are other great countries to live in, sure, but the default is to live in poverty under an oppressive government. For all this country's faults, we have genuinely tried to go against the grain towards freedom. Pretty awesome when you consider that.

It's never too late especially with so much free help on the internet and YT. Dont wait...... I'm fluent in Spanish and I've been studying mandarin Chinese for almost three months. Speaking more languages than English has enriched my life and helped me big time in my profession. There's no reason reason why you cant do the same thing if you cut down on television watching social media bs and other things. Just start by picking a 2nd language and make sure you do even as little as 15 minutes every day..... Find a practice partner who speaks your target language that really helps Good luck😊

My daughter was in Peru one thanksgiving with friends, and they were all treated to a thanksgiving dinner specially made for them. People all over the world are so awesome.

Yes, the country was founded by Europeans and populated by immigrants (primarily from Europe), but once they obtained citizenship and/or were born here they were no longer Europeans but instead Americans. You are what your passport says you are. ;)

Ryan's reaction to how much they loved his food was priceless. That's how I feel everytime someone says my food is good.

Heh, I never thought I'd ever see a moment where cranberry sauce needed explanation but... This is incredibly wholesome, and I'm very glad that they enjoyed the meal.

South Korean government keeps tabs on DPRK refugees after they cross over just in case they are actually DPRK spies and for other reasons. The SK government probably just told him where she was.

They would soak food in water to make it more filling. I've just been humbled .

I had it done differently when I were kept in the isolation cell of Vietnamese communist prison back in the late 1970s to 1981, we were all starved because of being fed only a plain cup of rotten cooked bad rice twice a day plus haft a cup of water from boiled green vegetable and a little salt, so I drank close to a whole liter of water before eating, then slowly chew little by little cooked rice at a time, dragged it out a whole hour, it made me feel like so full and satisfied when finished. Until now almost 40 years later I would finish eating every thing I have or save for later, clean out my dish or bowl to the last pieces or drops, nothing left over or throw away (except bones, lol!).

Best turkey I ever had was covered with foie gras (stuffed under the skin) to stop the turkey from drying-out .

The guy with the blonde hair has an interesting perspective that I first encountered when I moved to Albania. Many of the older people would talk about how even though they were lied to and had zero real liberties, they didn't really understand that until after the collapse of the dictatorship. It allowed them to focus on a simple life and be happy just with their farming or fishing. After the collapse of the dictatorship they too would talk about how it is now easier to live well but it is more difficult to be happy.

@@bruce5868 My only points of reference are, as I mentioned, living in Albania and that of meeting kids my age during the collapse of the Soviet Union. I grew up in a part of Cleveland, Ohio. My Russian friends would tell me about how they couldn't even process the idea of our grocery stores... that they'd be dumbfounded just looking at the candy isle (or, that there even was a candy isle.) I do agree and take a very libertarian stance on things; however, I don't even know how that would work within such constrictive societies like North Korea or Albania under the reign of Envar Hoxha.

Eunhee's bit about what she's thankful for really resonated with me. I've dealt with some rough stuff in my life and have always said the same as her. The troubled past humbles you and gives you a reason to appreciate the things you find later in life. She literally brought me to tears with that sentiment. much love.

I’m watching this November 2020 a week or so before Thanksgiving. Hearing all of your stories has made me even more thankful for my blessings. Happy Thanksgiving and may God bless you all!

Life was the same in the former Soviet Union and eastern Europe that was under Soviet rule. People had to forage for food in the woods. Oddly enough, that's why the eastern Europeans and Russians are healthier, stronger and hardier than the west and are predominantly heterosexual societies. It's due to the superior foods of nature rather than the factory junk from the West. Now that Russia and eastern Europe are no longer communist, they will catch up to the physical ailments of the West.

@@pollypurree1834 I'm pretty sure the LGBTQ community is still a minority here in the West dude. Due to the fact that half this country runs on Christianity (and probably some other factors as well), I think it's safe to say we are still a predominantly heterosexual society. Its just that thanks to Freedom of Speech/Expression and the anti-discrimination stuff going on, people are a lot more open about it, which _feels_ like the majority but in reality, only about 3% or 4% of the U.S. is LGBTQ. Idk much about the other stuff you said tho.

@@fakeituntilkingdomcome Try about an estimated 80% of the millenials are said to be gay. A normal society is supposed to be 20% gay to 80% straight. The numbers have slowly reversed since WW2. Most gays hide in the closet and only 9 to 10% are open.

yeah English can be a bastard with it's silent letters and words that are either spelt the same or sound the same with different meanings. a lot of people have trouble with read and read

For anyone wondering, American and Canadian Thanksgiving is traditionally very similar. Canadians have theirs in October, Americans have it in November.

The moment where they shared what they were grateful for... touched my heart. People in America sometimes dont understand true hardship. I cant imagine how these people feel, having lived a hard life, no longer connected to their families. Now they are free from true hardship and sharing a meal. I'm sure they are more grateful than I could ever be.

My father worked for a company from Finland, that used English executives to mediate their American assets. We would invite the English to our house especially while their families were in the process of coming over. They always loved Thanksgiving and savored the food. The Thanksgiving meal is one of the better parts of our culture to share.

God bless Minho. I truly hope he find happiness and be able to see his home again as a free man. Iron is the man. He was on dessert with a drumstick in his hand.

My grandparents fled religious persecution and genocide. It was either flee or die and they were forced to live in caves for a while and some how were able to get out and come to the USA. It has been instilled in me since birth to be thankful for being born in a country where we get to celebrate AS A NATION why we are thankful in our own unique, individual ways. I was never allowed to forget that and it is something my wife and I have passed on to our children and they have embraced it in the same manner. Don't take what you have for granted. This video is incredibly touching because these people from a country being throttled by such an oppressive regime are sharing an American holiday to celebrate their thanks in the same unique individual ways we do as Americans and that is touching no matter who you are or where you are from. I am also thankful that these wonderful people have opened their hearts and minds because this American has always been empathetic and sympathetic to the people of North Korea and how tough their daily life must be. The fact that Minho can still be thankful for where he came from tells me he is a man of great character. I'd like to have a beer with that guy!!

Canadian here: Having learned a bit more about conditions in North Korea through fun and informative videos like this, seeing a North Korean person with a heaping mounded plate of thanksgiving food really warms my heart

This was an awesome video. Their personal experiences mixed with the wholesomeness of Ryan and their excitement for the food was moving and makes me thankful for what I have.

Everyone in the west should watch videos like this. Sometimes people in the west forget how good they have it. Making this kind of video an annual thing is a great idea.

I agree, Americans have lost touch with their history, we need to remember how our ancestors fought many bloody wars to become independent and create our own nation from the ground up. Freedom wasn't handed to us, it was fought for and we need to remember that and instill more values to our kids, so they can appreciate the hard work and sacrifice it takes to a become free nation.

I feel like thanksgiving itself has lost its meaning because most people don't struggle to eat that much, financially. Some could eat like that everyday. Think about it right after we have this huge meal celebrating what we're thankful for, so many people just go out and buy more things on black friday as if they don't have enough already.

They're honesty about what they're thankful for is really humbling. I'm American and it's so easy to just blow by everything I should be grateful for. But, to be fair to myself, this is my everyday way of life. I'm just so used to it. Although it's not Thanksgiving today, I just want to express my thanks for those who put together this video. I never imagined anyone could be "satisfied" living in No. Korea. I sure as hell wouldn't be anywhere near satisfied.
