North Carolina Yurt Home (2011)
A tour of our former yurt home in Valdese, North Carolina! This was from 2011, when we lived there. Within a couple of years after building it, we moved onward to new things and the yurt became a vacation home with significantly simplified furnishings, but I never got an updated video! This video is no longer current, and the yurt is now owned privately by family members. But it remains one of the only code-approved residential yurt homes in North Carolina, so I thought it might be good to keep it on the internet! If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask! I don't check comments regularly, but I do get notifications from KZread to my email. Enjoy the tour and forgive my sometimes cringe-worthy commentary!

I've watched this video many times for space saving ideas. It's been very helpful. This may be none of my business but I am sorry to hear that you're going through a divorce. It's hard on everyone. Please stay strong and keep your chin up. And remember, even if you don't want to, it's been found that the act of smiling improves the mood of those around a person as well as improving the mood of the one smiling. So keep your chin up and smile.
This is the first time I have seen a non-conventional home that I would be happy to live in. It looks so comfortable and has all the amenities that I wouldn't live without. I am sure you was very happy when you lived there.

+Andrea Atkinson I have been interested in one for years but wasn't sure if I would really like it until I tried it out. It turns out, some camp grounds and state parks offer yurt rentals. My girlfriend, me and our children rented one and stayed in it at Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas for a week for New Years this year. It wasn't set up like this place, like comfortably furnished, but it had bunk beds, electricity, a small kitchen area, full surrounding outdoor deck and cool outdoor kitchen camp / fire pit area. My lady brought Christmas lights and strung them around the inside perimeter for ambience. It was an almost magical and Hobbit like stay for us all. We really enjoyed it and the experience sold me on the ability to do it permanently. I would recommend you Google campsites in your area with yurt rentals if you are curious about trying one out. Even if you don't get sold on the idea, I think you would really enjoy the short term experience of the yurt stay.
This is pretty much what I visualized doing with my yurt, I have a 16-footer and I'm thinking of getting a 24- or 30-footer. This video brought what was in my head to in front of my eyes. It shows me that yeah, I'm not crazy, it's a good house and it can be done :)
What a great use of ⛺️ yurts. You can live in whatever size home you want. Unlike the tiny house 🏡 you don't have to part with 95% of your belongings in order to move in.
I enjoyed seeing this very much. It looks so cozy and well designed. I love all the organization ideas. :)
Love the idea of a bath house with the laundry!
WOW! You have a beautiful, small home ☺
Really love what you guys have done. It gives me inspiration;thanks. Take care.
Stunning! So cozy, and the bathhouse is gorgeous. just beautiful!
My favorite part was the cat. No yurt is complete without one.
this is so amazing I lost count of how many times I said 'omg', 'this is amazing' 'omggggg'
This is exactly what I am thinking of doing can not afford a home so I think for very low cost this is a great option I like to hunt and fish so I could save on food cost as well even start a big garden I'm going to start researching this for myself love this video and thank you for the inspiration
This is very very lovely ...and I LOOOOVE all the books .💞
A very comfortable looking home. Well done!
What a lovely, comfortable home.
@yanikv No, actually. It's not like living in a tent at all. Drafts weren't really a problem, and the noise on the roof was magical when it rained. I'm really sad to be selling this house. I got divorced and my life took a different direction and I have moved to Arizona. I would live in a yurt again in a heartbeat.
I love it too. Beautiful.
I don't care what ANYONE says . . . . . It's an Awesome home ! ! ! ! I would love to have one done up like this. The one thing that did come to mind, is going to use the facilities . . . . in inclimate weather, doesn't having to go to the next yurt a bit inconvenient ? I understand though the fact that there just isn't enough room in the main yurt to put in a bathroom too. I would find a way to make an enclosure though for having to get up in the middle of the night to run to the bathroom. Especially during cold and wet weather. Do you find that to be any sort of problem ? As far as the rest of it, I truly love it and would consider living in one myself ! ! !

Daniel Patrick I agree about the bathroom facilities and inclement weather so maybe they should just put a cover of some sort between the two doors so at least you don't get wet or the snow on the ground between the two Yurts, but I have to say that bathroom your facility is beautiful & what a magnificent job they did with the 2 Yourts and the grounds around them, love the deck too 😉
Round is an old design for windy areas, especially with cold winds.
I love the way that you have designed your yurt, I think it is great. I just love the luxury bath tub, that is simply awesome.
I absolutely love your yurt. My husband and I have been talking a lot about getting a yurt for our future home. You've used your space really well and it looks wonderful. I watched the whole video with a smile on my face thinking of the future. We also wanted a second smaller yurt for our bathroom. We originally talked about a 40' but seeing what you've done with a 30' I might be changing my mind. You have absolutely inspired me! I love everything about your property, especially the deck space.
it's impressive to see what they done within that space. I love it.
What a beautiful space you have created! I love it!
This looks like such a cozy home! I love it!
Thank you for the tour, well done, lots of excellent usage of your space!
wow this is literally everything I wanted for me and my fiance when we thought of yurts.
I love it. it is yours and you have made it just the way you love it, i also love all the books!. NOW ALL YOU THUMPERS! IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL! NO ONE ASK YOUR OPINION ANYWAY!
Very creative👍. Love the deck surround makes it all very spacious ....
it is so spacious, really nice use of the space,i love it
Truly awesome, I love your setup.. great use of space too!
Thanks for posting this video of your home. My husband and I are thinking of doing the same thing. I'm a little skeptical - scared stiff is more like it. We live in Northern Ontario so I'm really worried about being cold. Somehow your video has helped put me more at ease.
I love this! This is exactly what I want.
neato, I been searching for some sort of alternative living space because I am a strange bird and I like to be cheap... um frugal. I live in North Carolina so I suppose it is nice to see that it is possible to build a yurt here.
Beautiful! Stunning.
awesome idea! thank you for sharing
I love it! It's so nice.
I been looking into tiny houses until i found this video....... need to do some more research about how a build like this would cost...I'm a little lucky on the labor end because my whole family builds for a living...I'm so excited and i LOVE Love LOVE your setup....Love all the book nook as well...keep up the good work cant wait to see the addition you are adding on....
This is a wonderful video
Wow!!!!! Love this setup.
actually it is a very very nice home and you'll have done wonders with it and i like the new plans for upgrading it with a new room.
Beautiful wonderful porch lovely Yurt ⛺️
Thats beyond nice. I would move outta my RV for that! Even though I live in a RV by choice. I have thought about a tiny house until I seen this.
Beautiful Home!
BRAVO!!!! Love your home!!!
Nice job!
Love what you've done, though I think I would go for less clutter in 1 yurt. Still a beautiful home.
great video!!
Very interesting looks like a tranquil and frugal lifestyle.
so cool...thanks for sharing!
I like the idea of yurt living. What I don't like is the idea of having a separate yurt for the bathroom (especially in the early hours of making a toliet run.
wow i loved it!!
very nice thank you for the tour

No one gonna say anything about the weird wigging out the camera is doing?
Very nice. Thanks for the tour. :)
Samantha, I have seen videos of various yurts and they just did not give me any feeling of wanting to live in one at all ... then I saw your video. I would not mind living in this! Very nice, cozy and compartmentalized to your tastes ... love that you guys are expanding to what you like ... doggy seems happy in the yurt as well. Do you worry about safety in the yurt? How strong are they?
Love it. I'm planning on building an earthbag home myself but this is a really nice yurt. :)
No yurt yet, but I'm having a love affair with the whole concept of living in the round- especially love the lightness from the skylight and the white walls!
Very nice. I will have a lot of books someday too ;-) !!
This is amazing! I would LOVE to live there =)
@deranaomi Yes! We LOVE it!! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the tour! Do you live in a yurt too?
It is truly lovely and comfy looking. As far as safety, if something or someone wants to cause you harm it will no matter what. Pacific yurts 30' start at $10,000

Large dog + gun = best home defense. Large dog alone will prevent most criminals, if not then the dog will alert you to get gun. Dog + gun and home advantage > crook with gun

DonWoschto at least if you had those things you could try to defend yourself vs just giving up and being easy target. I got them both...and will use them.

Amazing!
i love this so much. It's beautiful, i love what you've done with all of it. It's bigger then most Yurts i've seen. I would buy it if i lived in North Carolina. The only thing i would do is add more grass to the backyard.
that's amazing !
Amazing! Your yurt tastefully designed and pragmatic! You can design yurt interiors as there clearly is a market. Did you have utilities on the property before you put up the yurt? Do you have municipal water or well? Septic tank? I am putting my yurt up in Vermont. Any tips? Not on guns and dogs as security is not an issue. Thanks for your time and effort. Enjoy your yurt.
I just love your yurt home
Love it too. Great home. God Bless
Very nice.

Thanks so much for sharing your home and all of your wonderful ideas for how to make good use of the space inside your yurts. I'm especially interested in how you created a bath-house yurt as detached from your main living space. Was this easier or more economical than building the plumbing into the main yurt? Was there another reason why you decided on two separate spaces? In any case, it all turned out really nicely, especially with the tub and walk-in shower in the bath-house. Very cool and thank you for sharing!
really cool
very nice I didn't know people were doing this I watch how the mongols live in yurts and thought that would be a cozy home, so this is really neet
👍 Very cool.
thanks for the inspiration :-)
Do you have to have some type of permit from the county. I love the simplicity of yurt's. Thank you for sharing.
Love the house
Beautiful work and nice distribution of living area. We live in a yurt similar to your in Negros Oriental, in the Philippine Islands.
Great yurt....love your deck. We're just planning one for our yurt now and wondering whether to make it freestanding or attach it to floor beams from the house.
Are you still living in your yurt home? Would love to see an update on any changes you made since this video! Did you start with the bubble insulation? What did you use to reinsulate your ceiling? Did you insulate your floors? I think I would double insulate with wool in my build, but am checking out what other options are available and what people find works the best. How is the exterior holding up? Color fading? Do you treat the exterior with anything? Hope you are able to respond - thanks!
wow you have a real talent for design. This is exactly how I would love mine to look just not sure if I could make it look that awesome hopefully my girlfriend can handle it. The loft idea is awesome you made such great use of all the space. I may have to hire you to come out to Colorado and design mine. Seriously though you should design the interiors for a living.
Very nice! Do you have problems with mold?
Great!
I'm seriously looking into putting one of these on my parents property to live in next year. And would love some tips that you have for working with the North Carolina building code. So far the only thing I saw with yours was that you had to have roof panels. I would also love to know the sizes of your two buildings.
I love the bathroom yurt.
My dream life
Not for me, but SO interesting! Thanks for sharing.
Simply adorable- SOLD! LOL
Very nice, thanks for sharing. What brand/ company is this yurt from? Thanks!
Love it
The plans are being drawn for the oversized deck that our yurt will sit on. Can't wait!! Do you get any snow?
I love it! Been looking at Yurts for a little over a year. Looking for the land first in the tropics. Do you think it could handle the humidity there? Best! Ife~
what a beautiful home - obviously still making additions - but the place seems so roomy...
I want a yurt but im like only 15 years old so ill buy one in the future
I was wondering what the code process was like. Would you say NC is pretty easy to build a yurt in or was it difficult for y’all?
Inspiring, very well done and clever. What type of insulation is that in the roof? Rigid foam? Is a vapor barrier required? Also, do you think it could be used in the walls for partial soundproofing? Hear much when in rains etc? The traveling noise is what is keeping me from going all out and buying one. All the best.
This is fantastic you live in paradise, I have had a very similar vision but without the gazebo and add a wood fire hot tub in the deck :) Thanks for the video I'm so inspired, if you don't mind me asking what did it cost for you to do all this?
You have a large yurt is your heater adequate enough for the space? And your cooling unit as well does it cool the whole yurt ? North Carolina gets HOT...
omg yours is my fav set up so far my only question is how hard would it be to UN-hook the plumbing and electric to take it down and have it reset back up say if you moved. otherwise id love to hook up indoor lights and running water for a sink but i think i could manage doing hand washing out of a basin and solar electric id just want the electric part very finished so i could understand how it works.but i v fallen in love with yurts
Very nice so creative. Love it, are you part of the Yurt Company ? Or what companies do you recommend for quality and international delivery. Thanks for the tour
Thank you for sharing your home with us. Don't you like living in the round?
Did you have to get a building permits( plumbing, electrical, foundation, etc.) and did you assemble the yurt yourself? I live in the North Carolina Mountains and I was thinking of getting one. Thanks!
