Far be it for me to offer advice to the Tar Heels, but I believe that guarding one's opponent is generally conceded to be a wise strategy.

@@patrickgriffin8556I agree. I think the top 25 represents all the schools who are putting talent with depth on the floor. None of them look to have put together some good play yet. I think NC is as good as any of them to stick at the top right now. Mostly my point is probably about how much hyperbole is used in degrading the WCC. Portland is a middle to lower team in the conference and yet….

I was really hoping as a zags fan of over 25 years that portland out of the WCC would have a strong showing. Everyone who just listens to espn and pundits are led to believe the WCC is weak. Not so! Portland was 0-16 in 2019, 1-15 in 2020. They had no size and couldn't rebound but, could score on a given night. 2 years ago the zags i think beat them 115-88. 88 is alot of points against the zags when your tallest guy was 6'7". Last year they brought in over 1/2 dozen transfers and a tall international guy. They needed size and also they have a new coach. I'm not at all suprised the showing against UNc here. If you really follow the WCC you know how strong they got in just 1 year b/c of transfer portal. Especially teams like san diego and san fran benefitted the most. BYU slipped some last year b/c they had 2 frontcourt players baxter and harwood out and lacked size to compete otherwise they were easily a tourney team last year.

@@adriansmith5279 Its not just about getting tourney teams. It's about the lower tier teams like portland and san diego using transfer portal and coaching changes. Also these schools have alot players taking extra covid seasons. the blueblood schools hyped by espn have had way too many 1and done players in recent years. Many schools in WCC can have a year if things go right in terms of a healthy roster with transfers they become very competitve. Depth becomes the issue! I would like to see the zags lose to someone other than BYU or st marys this year b/c it helps the WCC in the long run. Gonzaga will be fine no matter what unless they were lose a couple front court players this year where they could have depth issue.

Portland gave them all they wanted! Props to Carolina! Them dudes just step up and bust some big shots!!! None there guards of forwards are scared to take shot, after big shot!!!! Deference between them and my team ....Kentucky...... we can't make them big shots, or we can, where just not, couple guards and forwards miss early... it's over there not shooting it, there looking to pass it to someone else, to the same thing pass it to someone else. But Portland gotta a sqaud!!!! Right now Kentucky be in a bad place against Portland!!! Just keeping it real!!!! Hopefully we can get it fixed, cause Carolina just licking there chops, counting off days and games till they get Kentucky, 1 year in making, we kicked there butts last year in Vegas, and bacot, black, love, rest them have not forgotten, and if u think there not licking there chops counting days...... Qiut smoking that stuff!!!!!!

It's early in the season and last year proves that UNC is better than some of its critics believe. Often as not most teams are not as good as analysts profess them to be and especially at this stage of the year. And no matter what if you're a college player you have some talent lest you wouldn't be on the court. And with the vagaries of the game and matchups, a team low in the pecking order can play at a higher level against a storied program. And sometimes the ball will bounce and be to an opponent's advantage. And when you're expected to lose you don't have the pressure of expectations like your more celebrated rival of the moment. The players feeling the pressure is the team with the reputation of having the greater consistency of appearances in the Final Four which is the Tar Heels. Portland played them well, but after the final horn, the Tar Heels are still undefeated. NC State played Kansas down to the wire and though undefeated until that game I heard no one heaping praise on the Wolfpack nor doubting Kansas's prowess as cagers.

@@roymerritt9927So I guess the answer is NC is that good. So maybe the WCC isn’t the weak conference everyone says it is?

  • @roymerritt9927

@@boardhead6720 I'll say this the Tar Heels are playing better now than they were at the beginning of last year. Love is better, R. J. Davis is as well and Armando Baycot is still a rebounding machine. Pete Nance has been a good addition to replace Brady Manek through the transfer portal. Carolina has a much more reliable bench with the addition of Tremble, on top of Puff Johnson, DeMarco Dunn, Styles, etc. And Portland was 4-2 going into this game and that ain't bad for a school in the WCC. And who says the WCC is a weak conference? It has Gonzaga, Loyola Marymont, Santa Clara, San Diego State, San Francisco, etc. and all those schools have a good tradition of top-notch basketball. But any conference with Gonzaga has to be pretty good. The ACC is good but for a long time the Tar Heels and those freaking creeps the Duke Blue Devils have dominated it for most of its existence like Clemson does in football now save but a brief period when NC State had Everett Case as a coach and Norm Sloan had David Thompson who was an even better college player than Michael Jordan who I saw play in high school and some college games. Dean Smith who was like a god down here in North Carolina used to beat Coach K like a drum when he first came to coach Duke who may be noted for his dirty players as much as how good they've been. Smith made most of his rival coaches leave because he could always pull out a victory against them he was so inspirational to his players who loved him like all Tar Heel fans. The first of the season is a time to get the bugs out of your game. The Heels are looking better than they did at the beginning of last year's season. I think they would have beat Kansas had Baycot not gotten hurt again at the end of the title game and Love had been shooting as well as he had been most of the tournament. Poll rankings don't really mean much until tournament time and the seeding you get. If you want to imply Carolina is not worthy of being number one feel free because it doesn't mean much this early. I'm a faithful Tar Heel fan and I'm not worried.
