North American Arms 22S Short review. The smallest production revolver.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

NAA is known for making the smallest revolvers in the firearms industry and today we'll take a look at their smallest one. The 22S is a .22 short ONLY, 5 shot stainless revolver with beautiful rosewood grips. It's a blast to shoot with CB 22 shorts or any other .22 short ammo. The 22S would also make a great choice for a backup concealed carry firearm. I did have a few issues with some light primer strikes in the beginning and the detent ball fell out of the basepin, I'll see what NAA wants to do to remedy the issues and post an update video in the future!

Smallest production gun in the world that fires a common round. (not requiring a round made especially by the manufacturer, but a round that can be found on store shelves).

I came up with a grip technique for these little revolvers. It’s a modified cup and saucer grip, but with your support hand, place you thumb on the back strap, then grip the handle and your thumb with your shooting hand. Your thumb will add a lot of volume to the grip. Let me know if that works for you. Everyone I show that to loves it.

I've also had the .22LR model copy of the model in this review for about 25 years. Have fired it several hundred times with no malfunctions that I recall. I have no problem hitting a paper plate at 25' every time. Great little carry revolver when jogging, biking, or anytime absolute deep concealment is needed. It's accurate with everything from 40 gr subsonic through CCI Stingers.

I’ve installed the folding holder with the pocket knife style clip. It really doesn’t sacrifice much size for what you get in return. A more easily accessible pistol, a much much better grip (nearly my entire hand) which gives a much more steady platform. Made it much more accurate and controllable. Carried it like a pocketknife for 2 years or so now. Ymmv

The NAA .22 short is on the wishlist...we own the .22lr model, and know exactly what we would be getting...shorts are fun...! the gun has very little utility, the effective range for the short would be getting snot or earwax on the muzzle when firing...that would work, and kinda how we think about our .22lr...the main point is the concealability (surprise still a tactical advantage), a firearm at point blank range still beats harsh words...and shorts are fun...! I noted even with the slow start you got into blowing them up...

In light of my parents own experience, it should be said when doing the following: 1) Cocking the Hammer. 2) Removing the Cylinder Pin. (Cylinder easily drops out.) 3) Realigning the Cylinder and the Pin back into place. 4) Getting the Hammer Anvil to drop into the Safety Notch. DOING THESE WILL .... Require Some Decent Finger Strength And Finesse. It's not going to be as cut and dry, for a lot of people, as shown in these YT videos, especially for females and the elderly. You'd definitely be better off with their “RANGER II Break-Top” or “SIDEWINDER” features a “swing-out” style cylinder. They're also all similar in size. Recommend Federal Punch ammo.

My .22 Short mini revolver would have a misfire about 1/5 times when I got it. Fortunately I had a new mainspring on hand and immediately replaced it. No further misfires many rounds later. Replacing the spring in these is no easy job and not a task for the inexperienced though. But NAA fixes things pretty quickly if your gun needs service. There was a noticably deeper firing pin impression in the cases after changing the spring.

I had issues with light strikes on mine as well, also using the aguila ammo. I don't think it's the gun or ammo though. I noticed the trigger was hitting my middle finger after it breaks and snaps to the rearward position. I think the forward pressure on the trigger somehow causes the hammer to slightly drag on its way down causing a light strike. I readjusted my grip and noticed it wasn't happening as often, and when I put some bigger grips on it (boot grips from NAA) I had no more light strikes as I could get a proper grip on it. It's also possible that it was just bad ammo though.

A much-safer method for loading that requires no manipulation of the trigger or hammer is this: With the hammer fully at rest, pull the rod and remove the cylinder from the gun's right side. Load the chambers (practice first without doing so.) Hold the frame with the right middle finger, with the frame braced against the thumb base, allowing the index finger and thumb to pinch the cylinder (once installed) from either side. While looking through the frame from the left, roll the cylinder in from the right side while aligning the safety notch to engage the hammer tip, which is visible in the frame. Using the right thumb and index finger, hold the cylinder into the center and use the left hand to insert the rod. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. Practice with an unloaded gun. It really requires no more dexterity than the NAA method, but is far quicker once learned. This works on my .22LR and .22Short revolvers. However, it does not work well with my .22WMR gun; the cylinder is bigger and attempts to engage the cylinder stop in the frame before being fully seated.

22 short was originally designed as a black powder round for self defense. I’ve read of people carrying them into the civil war and knew an old man who carried a Beretta Minx (22 short) in Korea. I agree they are weak by today’s standards and I only want one for deep concealment or close range and quiet pest handling (like coyotes that bother my dogs on hikes) but I would use it for more if I had to.

@@evocati6523 as of now most countries in Europe have strict regulations mostly on center-fire. A variety of rimfire cartridges being popular in many places has alot to do with firearm regulations. The cartridge was very popular in the us many years ago. 6mm flobert has very weak ballistic characteristics. As for "marksmanship competition" it was really only used in bars originally. Nowadays many guns are chambered for it for the euro market specifically because of rimfires lax regulations.

I don't know if I could actually grip it with just one hand, I sort of held it between my hands. NAA lists the ballistic performance on their website if that helps. I wish I had some ballistic gel but that stuff is a little pricey. You can make it yourself with regular gelatin but it melts pretty quick when it's warm out. They are probably more of a novelty than anything, a good collector item. They are well made and manufactured right here in America. As for safety, being a single action they require a deliberate effort to get them to fire. They can be carried in your pocket with the hammer in the safety notch and the chance of accidental discharge is virtually none. I have never heard of any accidents with a NAA revolver but that doesn't mean it can't happen, people choke to death on food sometimes. Accidents happen to people all the time and usually when they engage in risky behavior and don't follow safety rules. Thanks for watching!
