I see the documentary is creating a lot of comments and debate. That is good, debate always is. Within this debate there is some criticism of the BLM, even very severe criticism. It should be taken into account that this documentary was made in the early 2000's. It correctly depicts the work that was going on at and with the BLM at that time. I can vouch for that. The BLM may have changed as an organization and the way it operates since then. I hear talk/mention of a much less animal-friendly approach. I am not contesting that, as I have no knowledge of the BLM today (I live in Europe). There is every reason to be critical and skeptic, if that is the case. That being said, I ask (demand) that people keep the tone decent in this thread/forum. Insults, f...words etc. and undocumented wild accusations will be removed by me personally.

Why are you yelling?

I live on 120 acres of fenced property in NE Venture County between Simi Valley and San Fernando Valley. A dozen horses get to go where they want all day and a few are Mustangs from Nevada. They usually stay close to the corrals and hay though, and return every night to the corrals. This area has been used for Hollywood westerns for 100 years, having been used by most, if not all, western serial tv shows like the Lone Ranger and so many others. There were dozens of movie ranches within a 10 mile radius.

This is a true story and will prove that I was there. 1988-1989 between Tonapa and Christle Springs off the beaten path about 50-60 miles in a big valley I saw a white stallion with about 90-120 all dark brown and some black mares and it was truly a beautiful sight. I always was able to whistle and using my voice at the same time could sound just like a horse. When I called out to this group that was running from me and my truck the white responded with a magnificent fury. His herd kept running up the side between the mountain and a huge single rock formation and he came running up and down the gullies till he got within eyesight of me and I am glad he stopped to look me over. He was about 150 yards and I did not whistle at him again. He reared up and trotted back to his mares with his head and tail arched cause I was not a threat. Until he saw me he thought I was a challenge. Anyone in the history of big heards at that time knows of the white stallion I speak of. There was not an unhealthy animal that I could see and a spectacle of a lifetime was caught on my camera. I also hold some drilling records that have not been beaten in North America.

In the 70s my husband worked for the Nevada Test Site,building a power-line,all areas were restricted,no cameras etc.He would tell me the things he witnessed or saw while being there daily for 9 months.Seeing the Mustang on the mesa was one.

Genuinely was so happy to see the Horse Program for the inmates, that's a really wonderful thing that's happening - for the successes at least. It was really good to see those people with hope when their lives weren't what they'd possibly had wanted before (maybe they had their ideal life, I dunno) but some just seemed so happy with the horses :)

Thank you so very much for this video. I have owned a few horses in my lifetime, Purely for pleasure riding and riding in parades. There was a group of us who all lived in the city and we started a riding club. We boarded our horses in Saxonsburg, pa. The owner of the stables was a great person to have as a friend as was his son Ben. I have always had a great love for horses and still do. This was one of the greatest times in my life. I have not had the pleasure of owning my own horse for some years but I still ride. Not to bad for an 80 yr. Old Black guy. To all of you folks who watched this video, if you have never experienced being involved with horses in anyway,try learning to ride to start. It is an awesome experience you will never forget Thanks again for this video, it brought back a lot of memories . Ps. Thank you Wayne and God bless.

That one inmate that braided the grey roans forelock. You can tell these guys really care about earning the horses trust and respect. Amazing for these horses but mostly for these inmates. I'm incredibly impressed and grateful that these beautiful, majestic animals are being TRAINED NOT BROKE by an amazing program. I'd love to adopt one.

If you are ever fortunate enough to have a horse adore you, that relationship will be one of the most precious in your life. I worked with a mare that would come and put her mouth around a bit because she like our riding time that much. BTW I'm a dog guy not a horse guy. Still, I like most critters.

Lol. I noticed that too. I’m sure the guy is skilled, but a very odd delivery.

This film brought back memories. I grew up riding Saddlebreds, then Hunter/Jumpers, Western Reining and finally Dressage. I've owned and ridden many different breeds of horses and ponies. Then my oldest daughter bought a Mexican Mustang for her husband because her Thoroughbred was too hot for hubby to ride. His name was Rafael, but we soon started calling him St. Raffie. He was so wise and brave and steady. You had to work slow and carefully with him on the ground at first until he was sure about you, but he was solid safe around traffic, bulls, playgrounds with screaming little kids. He did everything, even jumping! He was wonderful; good bone, great feet. Raffie finally got too old in the tooth (worn down from previous life in sandy soil) and she couldn't keep weight on him. He let her know it was time for him to pass on. He is buried in a grassy field under his favorite tree but we will always remember our little blood bay saint. Mustangs are truly wonderful horses.

When they were taming the horse, it reminded me of Toothless and Hiccup.. especially when he reached out to pet the horse.

All prisons should be geared toward rehabilitation instead of punishment .I think it’s Sweden that has prisons that are all about rehab and their re offend rate is very low.

Over here is southern California we have them by our river , they hide out way in the desert and only come at night to drink from the river it breaks my heart how scared they are of us , they come in a huge huge group along with bulls and cows and mules but lately they are getting farther away . I admire them so much sometimes if you are super quiet they will come and drink next to you and it's amazing to see all them and the baby's

Mustangs are some of the most amazing horses ever, my sister got her first mustang back in 2017 and we have just loved them ever since. I have 2 mustangs of my own, the trust between my gelding and I is unbelievable. He's just so trusting and kind, he's only two so he wasn't in the wild for long. Then my yearling from Antelope valley just acts like any regular domestic horse, she was most likely gathered as a foal with her mum. There's so many nice mustangs, it's hard to find one that you wouldn't bring home. They're all so correct and beautiful. The real key with training them is to give them time, if you push them too much they can either get aggressive (scared or not.) or hurt themselves trying to jump a fence etc.

Why is he a gelding?

Back in my younger years I used to live in Big Piney Wyoming with my grandfather. We had 2 paved roads, one going North/South ( North to Jackson Hole and South to Rock Springs) and one heading out towards the mountains to the west, my Grandfather and I would " ride out to the end of the pavement in his car and we could watch the wild horses be themselves, beautiful creatures in stunningly beautiful country. I miss those days. How bout we let THE PEOPLE of the states vote on where they end up after round up and not some thieving political hack! Novel thought. Thanks for the video.

I recently created my own documentary of my long ride across Ireland on my own two horses. We knocked on strangers doors asking for a field for the night and a place to camp! I think that video is the best way to capture the good the bad and the ugly and without storytellers like you to share these with others then the world would be a much smaller place!

What a wonderful video. We here in UK don't have the wide open spaces that you guys enjoy. I live in the countryside (Guildford , Surrey) and I've only known the horses of some ex-girlfriends. That horse-whisperer fella was cool. There was one horse, by the name of Harley, who stood at 18 hands and was the most gentle boy. Harley used to rest his chin on my hand as I stood inside the bottom of the stable door. I stroked his withers and the look in his eye was both calm and friendly. Those Wranglers are good guys. Beautiful animals.

Beautiful Graceful Creatures I Love Them We Appreciate The The People Who Care For Them

So happy to see that horses are finally being recognized as having been from North America. They didn’t return only 500 years ago though. There are many artifacts found showing that our indigenous people had a relationship with horses long before the Spanish horses arrived.

I didn't know if I was going to like this video because it started off with the helo. But after watching it I came around and so a pretty good film. My hat is off to the men that treated these animals with love not just another way to make a buck.

Good film ~ thank you Jan. Horses are my soul. I used to be a "horse tamer/wrangler" , started colts and worked with horses of all ages for 30+ years, not counting all the riding & stable work I did as a kid. My approach and philosophy is very much the same as Steve Mantle's etc. So glad he talked about how EGO has no place with horses, in the beginning and throughout their life with us.

I’m not a huge believer in therapy but I believe those prison horse training programs must have a positive effect on some of those prisoners.

@@robyndismon394 good question! It depends, usually on the type of criminal. But I have seen surprising successes. I've also seen complete disasters, often when a convict has finished his time at animal work-therapy and goes back to incarceration. The emotional backlash can drive inmates to kill, even if they were non-violent prisoners before. That's a side seldom shown.

Maybe it's wrong to say this to you, cause of your job, but I'd rather be rid of a generous number of convicts and use the money states spend for their keep and feeding on securing land for wild horses. Nth Americas attitude towards wild horse management is far better then Australia. At this point I am ashamed to say I am Australian and ashamed at Australian Governments management plan based on past history. Perhaps you will consider viewing some shocking footage of what us Australian people witnessed back in 2002 . How Australian gov decided to approach our wild horse situation as their management plan> Then maybe consider you in Nth America are more dignified and kinder then you may think. Based on studies the Nth American land can only withstand 40,000 wild horses at one time and this is respect to not kill them rather to catch and control the herd. Forgive me if I offend. This is not my intention at all sending you this reply. My hope is that passionate intelligent people such as yourself spread the word about wild horses in general so more people are aware . regards from Kylie in Australia.

This is an amazing documentary which should be played at every school. It's so soul soothing to see how these unique animals are treated, respected, honoured and given the care and the chance to help rehabilitation for so many!!! Just perfect combination. I'd love to know more about the wild horse program and wish serves as an example for many prisoner systems around the world. Horses are powerful healears and able to transform lives of human beings in ways beyond our limited comprehension capacity. 👏👌🙌🙏💖

Dunno which kind of education are you trying to achieve with such documentary... Would be better to explain how to respect nature and wild animals by doing a step back and reach a compromise about the amount of land that we should leave wild. If i'd be the kid watching this docunentary I'd ask immedialtely: "Why are we renting / loaning milions of acres to ranches and put these amazing creatures in a situation where they risk to die from starving?" I guess an honest teacher would answer "Good point boy! The answer is: 'cause humans are greed and think to be gods".

I give the BLM a good grade in caring for the Mustang. I worked Ranches most of my youth. Owned horses as a kid and love them. I didn't see any lather-up horses as they were rounded-up and I saw the men as being knowledgable and caring. I know the reality of overpopulation and starvation and wish they would treat humans with the same standard. Bet I lost most of my readers with that comment, but most people know nothing of reality. Just read many of the other comments for proof.

Skydog ranch has a sanctuary in oregon where they released the mustang Goliath and his mare Redlady. The reason for that is in this video because of BLM rounding up 2000 or so horses there. They have their own video about what was happening here. Check them out.

Today, or this morning, it was my turn to watch your great presentation about wild horses. I hope the programs to manage the American Iconic Mustang are still working out, funded and successful. Some of the archaeological history of a horse, as it relates to Spain, was kind of odd for me, as I had learned the Asian horse breeds (Appaloosa (oldest) and Arabian) predated a Spanish horse breed. Nonetheless, it was good to see humans learning a better ecological approach system for the Mustang. Many thanks for all the work and the show.

For the longest time I never knew or saw horses living in the wild. It's truly amazing to see them in their natural habitat running freely. I'm so used to them being domesticated animals solely used for humans. To see them like this...brings a smile to my face. X

That was beautiful. Wish we had more horses in Canada like the wild mustangs

I seen some in the Town of Dayton NV not long ago they are such awesome Beings they walked through the Neigborhood If i knew anything about Horses i would take some of them and treat them very good.So glad they are being looked after so glad.they do look very healthy
