It was NEVER just "these are the realms, that's it". 2018 GoW literally immediately breaks that notion with the sheer fact that Kratos is there. Greek mythos happened. And now he's there. HUGE SPOILERS FOR THE GAME, STOP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED IT; Like Brok says in the game, it's the nature of a thing that matters, not the form. Sure, the game takes huge creative liberties, but general events like "Odin and Thor die at Ragnarok" and "Wolf bites Tyr/Wolf kills Odin" ("Loki" transforms into a wolf and bites Odin just after Odin stabs Brok while disguised as Tyr, Odin is later killed by "Loki" who in-game frequently transforms into a wolf) still mostly happen.

When they visited the Norns they stated that it's not that they don't see the future or control fate, it's that they understand people's nature therefore their actions are predictable. The original story of ragnarock is what was would inevitably happen as a result of those predictable actions. However, nearly all the main characters changed their nature resulting in the prediction not going as expected. Though others, mainly Odin, continued to follow the same path without changing resulting in at least some of the events still unfolding.

The point is that Kratos as a thing in these stories, exists to break up the mythology. In the trilogy he did that by murdering the pantheon and dooming/freeing the world. In the two new games he instead subverted prophecy and changed mythology by seeking change in himself and cooperating with those around him. Saying that "Ragnarok didn't really happen, so this is bad" would be akin to going "hares are much faster than turtles, this story is dumb".

@@Jsc.75 technically AC valhalla DID get it more accurate where it is a wolf and Loki's son, grows rapidly, gets to kill Odin, eats Tyr's arm after Odin's betrayal, but what the GOW does is interesting as well, but again its just such huge missed potential to have Fenrir and Tyr out of action at Ragnarok. Its Fenrir who was supposed to kill Odin and Jorm to kill Thor, was hoping they would make a twist somehow for a final blow kinda how they did Baldr with the mistletoe since in the myth it is Loki who causes Baldr's death with mistletoe. GOW could've used Fenrir and Tyr much better than what we got, for example, Fenrir could've been from the future as well, sent back in time like Jorm, Tyr (real one) joins Kratos and Atreus to capture Fenrir and thats how they could get the storyline to play out. This way we get a proper fight with Fenrir and not Garm. Also Ragnarok is an event, not a being.
