Didn't realise it was so easy to get to Giverney and Paris... Shame it was dark in Dieppe, its worth walking the old line from the inner harbour to what is now the marina to where the foot passengers used to disembark the rail connected ferries before the introduction of the tunnel...

Really appreciate the time and care you put into these videos, Johnny. I’m an American, so I have no choice but to live out these rides and routes vicariously. Went to Ireland a few years back, spent about 2 hours on the DART, and came back realizing that I had become a “train guy.” Thanks for your videos!

Great video! I must mention that the Flix Bus from Dieppe to Rouen is well worth considering for a lowly £3.96 and only 10 minutes longer journey time than train!

I have done this line a few times. Train 201 The Night Ferry (22.07 Paris St Lazare to Dieppe Maritime) used to connect with the overnight tub to Newhaven, where a direct non stop train from Newhaven Marine took you to Victoria. This route was favoured as it allowed a much later departure from Paris compared with Calais, where the last train left Paris Nord at the earlier time of 18.30.

There's not going to be a whole lot of Art Deco on this set of videos around Europe. Must say, the stars of the trip will be mostly 21st century modern stations! A nice video which highlights that direct routes are not always the most interesting. Some of the places brought back some personal memories of August this year, though in the opposite direction. I had caught the train from Gare St Lazare to Gare Vernon-Giverny and had taken with me my Brompton bike. The train was extremely busy, both with regular commuters and tourists. An overnight in Vernon gave me a chance to visit Monet's house and gardens in nearby Giverny. Over the following days, I cycled along the Seine to Rouen. I then spent a couple of days relaxing in that beautiful city. My route to Dieppe was slightly different from your own as I next caught the Le Havre to Lille Flandres train from the beautiful Rouen station. My journey was very short and again the train was packed. Luckily it was just the two stops to a small town called Serqueux. My last night was spent at nearby Forges-les-Eaux before cycling along a dedicated cycle path on a former railway line all the way to Dieppe. The route was dotted by former stations, platforms and old signals. Where there had been level-crossings were the modernised homes of those whose job it had been to operate the crossings.

Thank you, that is very kind of you to say. I'm enjoying the journeys and the process of editing the videos. So, as I've said before... "I'll keep making them and you keep watching them!" I've got these journeys from 2023 to edit and release then I've got some plans for the start of 2024 too 👍

Fun fact is that the former direct route between Dieppe and Paris St Lazare closed in 2006 between Dieppe and Serqueux, which are now only reachable by rather infrequent replacement buses. However, line J of the Paris' Transilien network gets into Normandy as far as Gisors. However, despite the fact of the change at Rouen seems relatively quick

I was thinking about adding some chat about the closed direct route, but I couldn't get it to fit in the voiceover - so thank you for adding that extra detail here. as the change at Rouen is pretty seemless, I don't think the good people of Dieppe miss out that much..

There are a whole host of Art Noveau stations in France many built in the late 1920s so when I saw Rouen Rive Droit I thought it was reminiscent of Limoges-Bénédictins in the Limosin.

Yeah. Those 2nd class seats on the Dippe-Rouen service were so much nicer than any offering in the UK tbh...

I am constantly impressed with French railways. Rouen station is worth a visit alone. It just makes the railway system in the UK look very deficient!

Splendid work, Johnny -- as we have come to expect . You have the knack for selecting routes that many of your viewers have considered (and wished) taking. Being inspired by one of your earlier videos , I returned to Malaga after a quarter of a century away. I then followed in your footsteps to Cordoba and glared for a while at THAT station . Enjoyed the video. Wish you could have spent more time in Rouen station, and shared your breakfast with us. I enjoy it when you really feel at home somewhere.... eg the bar at Marylebone. it feels very relaxing.

You are right that the whole thrust of the Marylebone video was that the station was a calm oasis and those shots over a beer did try to convey that. I know it's unwise to generalise but it's striking how much better the rail infrastructure is in France than the UK. Actual waiting rooms at small stations! And I bet they have toilets too!

Interesting route to Paris and not a part of France I know at all. Both enlighting and informative. Thank you. Not that SNCF is perfect but Why is SNCF’s regional offering so much more appealing and cheaper than many UK comparisons?

Yes, it was not a part of France I have been to really, so I was pleased to take this lesser-followed route myself. I think it helps that the French loading gauge is larger and so the interiors can be more spacious, but in the end, its down to politics... you get the train service you vote for... Thanks so much for watching 👍

its a distinct possibility- having done some digging, France does have some class 66 locos, as well as the derivative class 77 design which looks very similar

Thanks 👍 Wrt graffiti. Years ago I watched a story about NY metro. Where they just decided to pull out of service and clean up any train with graffiti. The result was that those doing it knew that whatever they did would not be seen by anybody and so the practice just died out on the trains. Maybe some countries do the same and some do not. I do agree that the state of trains in BE and NL was much worse when I was there.

Yes. The UK suffers from a smaller loading gauge, which means it is damn near impossible to design a double deck train that would fit under bridges and through tunnels on most of the network. Thanks for watching 👍

Equivalent to the journey from Dieppe to Paris is a journey from Mansfield to St Pancras (both 195kms to the capital with 1 change travelling Std Class on Jan 10th). At 8.15am departure UK fare is £60 taking 2hrs54m compared to French fare €35.70 (£31.04) taking 3hrs32m. Wait until 11am to leave and the French fare reduces to €16.00 and the UK fare to £16.10!

@@timdiggle5090 there is a fetish in the uk for talking down what is objectively one of the best rail systems on earth. usually by people with an agenda, usually a 'nationalise everything' agenda. as if nationalisation is what took arguably the best railways on the planet ever and gutted them via things such as the (mainly ,if not entirely,labour imposed) castle/fraser cuts(misleadingly referred to as the beeching cuts) and blowing vast amounts of money on non starters such as the apt or the mass dieselisation in the 1960s as opposed to the more keep steam for longer then go electric approach en continent.

France does have the best trains especially in Northern France. Plus Northern France is lot different from South of France.

Well I suppose they are different in regions and on different routes. But I was certainly very happy with the ones running between Dieppe and Paris. Both trains were comfortable, smooth and reasonably quick.
