Jumièges Abbey has a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 7th century. It was founded around 654 AD. by Saint Philibert, a Frankish nobleman, who became the first abbot of the abbey. Over the centuries, the abbey grew in importance to become one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in Western Europe.
During the Carolingian period, the abbey prospered and became an important religious, cultural and economic centre. Some Carolingian and Norman rulers gave their support to the abbey, contributing to its growth and wealth.
Between the 9th and the 10th century, the abbey was destroyed several times by Viking raids. However, it was always rebuilt and continued to play a significant part in Norman history.
During the French Revolution, the abbey suffered heavy damage and was largely abandoned. Many of its structures were looted and destroyed.
In the 19th century, the site was classified as a historic monument and restoration work began. Today, the ruins of the Jumièges Abbey are an important tourist and historical site, attracting visitors from all over the world, admiring the majesty and charm of this ancient monastic complex.
