Norman is all about escapism. Each song talks about different ways to escape from reality and problems. The cover features a burning America, a painted sky, and Lana sailing away with a man on a boat. This is literally the cover of escapism. Lana does not want to see the new America, because she knows that it will end in fire, and instead of these worries she decides to run away to sea , presenting America as illusory, drawn by an artist. THIS IS JUST GENIUS

The links to alcoholism in her songs, in how to disappear specifically, is referencing her past. Lana struggled with alcoholism and drugs during her teenage years so she was sent to a boarding school which is also referenced in ‘this is what makes us girls’. She decided to pursue music and went through many stage names (may jailer, sparkle jump-rope queen, Lizzy grant) before finally deciding on the name Lana Del Rey. Also, her given name is Elizabeth Grant which you may noticed on the song credits, she doesn’t have any children currently, but talks about the name clementine (dance till we die - chemtrails over the country club) and Angelina (cherry blossom - blue bannisters). It you want to know more about her past I would recommend listening to her audio book and her most recent album, dykttatuob. Love your reactions btw.

Hi, Cass! Love your reactions of Lana's albums. One fun fact about Venice B*tch is that Lana showed up with the song for her managers like "I think this is my next single" and they told her "are you kidding me? It's called Venice Bitch and it last 10 minutes? Why can't you make a 3 minutes normal pop song?", but she told them "it's end of summer and some people just wanna drive around for 10 minutes and get lost in some electric guitar" She really knows what we need, and it's my very favorite song of hers.💙

So California was written about Barrie James O'Neil, one of Lana's exes from around 2011. The songs Black Beauty, Flipside, Thunder and more were about him. Barrie struggles with depression which is one of the reasons they broke up. I just find there love for eachother to be something else, even to this day they care so much about eachother. He even privately messaged another reactor who does Lana to thank him for appreciating her music which is just adorable i cried when the guy said Barrie had messaged him. He's an artist too and helped make a lot of her earlier songs, and even to this day he still does lives on instagram covering her songs. Barrie is Scottish so thats why she says 'if you come back to America'. He's also the guy who gave her the line 'pussy tastes like pepsi cola' lol

@@housekinokuni903 So I looked this up. In sailing, a “board” is a a distance covered by ship or vessel in a single “tack”. “Tack” here refers to “an act of changing course by turning a boat's head into and through the wind, so as to bring the wind on the opposite side”. So I think she’s saying, when he steers his boat/his life into a challenging direction, she will be there to carry him through it/help him navigate this challenging distance. While also admitting she can be the lighting and thunder as well. She will help him through whatever, but she can’t promise it’ll be smooth sailing as she’s a complex character also. I think this makes sense that Lana might know these terms as did have sailing lessons before as mentioned in her poem Sportcruiser - and she has made many sailing references since this.

The Mariner's breakdown you did was spot-on, I love when a listener can break down a song into pieces and then fit the puzzle together like you did. It's so cool to watch, especially as someone who had to look up meanings and listen to the songs many times over to get them. Norman Rockwell was known for his depictions of American culture. To many, he is THE American artist of the 20th century due to his subjects of small towns, Every day American life, and other Americana influences. many of the songs on Lana's NFR take inspiration from American culture during the end of the 2010's. She speaks a lot about the current state of America which kind of reflects back onto how NFR painted this perfect American image. The cover is supposed to reflect a NR painting, but if you look in the back the landscape is on fire and she is reaching out to you to pull you into safety. She talks about it in some interviews, here's one! kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGeZ3MiInKfHmrA.html

A woman like Lana would've had *so* many options to settle down with a guy who wants to also settle down and have kids, she just, well, chose to date men who were not that man, ultimately. By which, I mean she was attracted / drawn to / dated emotionally unavailable men, dark-triad f-boys, and "manchildren" who f her so good that she almost confesses love. These men excite her, but these men are not the ones who're gonna give her a stable life with a family. Many such cases. It's a sad situation, but I see it across the board with Millennial women. They date the 'hot manchild' who has more red flags than a Matador festival, and then get shocked/surprised when said men - inevitably - screw them over several months/years down the line, or reveal that they never had serious intentions to begin with.

I feel like a lot of her earlier songs have a saviour complex, like if she's their 'ride or die' even when they are emotionally available or a manchild then they'll somehow have a sweet spot just for her, as someone who relates to her and romanticises people/things that shouldn't be romanticised i definitely understand her but also want to scream at her when she falls for the same thing over and over again lol. I just hope she eventually has everything she wants

@@Amicitia- Not at all. I'm not specifically referring to any of her exes that were abusive. Merely just that they were not the 'family man' types, and that they evidently had commitment issues. This is evident given that her lyrics specifically express this throughout multiple albums, particularly NFR. Nobody deserves to be abused, obviously, but it's not a discussion of whether someone's 'at fault' or not. It's about taking accountability for the type of people we date. I used to date a psychotic girl with daddy issues, who treated me hot n cold, toyed with my feelings etc. I was well aware of the red flags going in, but I chose to stick around 1) because she was very attractive and we had great physical chemistry. 2) I thought she might 'change' and 'calm down' for me. Obviously, she didn't, and I got hurt. But it was a learning lesson for me. Obviously she was a shitty person but I was also foolish for staying in the relationship for as along as I did, knowing the red flags. If i now, years late, continued chasing after the same types of women, I'd be an idiot. Doesn't 'make me deserve' the abuse, but it does mean I lack accountability for choosing partners who align to what's healthy for me... A bit of a rant but I just dislike this idea that any recognition of someone repeatedly picking partners who are poor choices for them = "they deserve abuse!" thats the reach/conclusion you're making from that, so. Yeah

1:13:24 for my perspective, I think that she’s describing the American dream. Since Trump won the elections in 2016, Lana change her perspective of the American dream, realizing that it isn’t real and it will never be real, and also realized the damage that the US had made because of capitalism (climate change, war, etc.), when she says “Kanye west is blond and gone”, she’s referring about when Kanye became friends with Donald Trump, and with that reason, he became part of the white capitalism supremacy. The greatest was the first song that make me wanna listen to Lana del Rey, and every time I listen to it I can see my misunderstood younger self who thought the world was fvck up. It was also the first song that make me cry, and I cry every time I listen to it because it gives me a lot of nostalgia even tho 2019 wasn’t my best year. Lana for me is that person that says to you that it’s ok to cry, I don’t find her depressing, for me is like a safe space where I can think and know about myself and my feelings.

I have been waiting for this reaction my whole life!! I was so happy to see it today on my notifications. Some comments: How to disappear: No, she doesn't have children. In future albums she develops the children narrative. The Greatest: The "don't forget me" narrative is also developed on her latest album and I think you will loved it, is my personal fav tied with NFR. Bartender: You asked if she had found long-term relationship since this album. Well, NFR came out on 2019 and since that she had 5 public relationships. Now, she is single (as far as we know).

This album was on repeat every single day for me for about 2 years. I basically dead listened to it because it is so perfect. Def her best album and one of the best albums of ALL time. The fact that it didn’t get a Grammy is a travesty.

I love how lana has a lot of lyrics that could be heard in different ways and it makes sense either way. Like in F it I love you, I always heard the outro as “drugs is in my veins, running out of time” because of how the song started with living in an unhealthy way and the whole apocalyptic vibe of how it progresses. But this is the first time I saw the lyrics reported saying “jazz is in my veins” which just makes sense knowing lana and her soul’s musical influences

I always hear “chances in my veins, running out of time” not “jazz” and google says it’s “chances”, too. I think that makes so much more sense. Like you have all these chances but you’re also running out of the time to take them all. F it ily is my favorite song ever by her, I loved your reaction

she always talks about drinking or being wasted, she had a drinking problem when she was 14 but she’s actually been sober for a very long time now. in her poetry book she mentions she hasn’t been drunk for 14 years (which makes it 17 or 18 now i think) so I think it’s important context to know that even throughout albums like BTD and ultraviolence, she was sober (from alcohol at least). That makes me think that the “I’m wasted” (or whenever she talks about being drunk tbh) has a double meaning and not just the one we associate with alcohol.

Lana had an intense relationship with Barrie James O’Neil that was ending as she was writing Ultraviolence. A lot of that album was about him. It ended due to his depression and drug use. Lana couldn’t get through to him and make it work. They used to make amazing music together, and Barrie made songs about Lana after they broke up. Angel Tears and Riverside are really good songs that he wrote about their relationship.

I don't know why but it makes me so happy to watch people being so excited and happy listening to NFR for the first time !! And you know what I get it this want to take your time and almost drag each album to really enjoy every single minute of it cause you don't want the journey to end !! It's so relatable and just shows how much you care about Lana's music and also it gives you enough time to get familiar with the songs before moving on and be able to connect the newest songs with the older ones

The 1969 song Crimson and Clover by Tommy James and the Shondells ends with a section of glitched out sounding vocals and that is sort of mirrored in Venice Bitch with the extended glitched out guitar and synth work that starts midway through the song.
