Norman Blake's '34 D-18H played by Kenny Smith
Музыка
In 1934, Martin's dreadnought models went from a 12-fret neck to a 14-fret, but the standard for Hawaiian models remained 12-fret. This 1934 D-18H is one of only three made by Martin, and it has been converted to standard (aka Spanish-style) setup. if that's not historically important enough, it was owned and used extensively by Norman Blake. It was Blake's guitar of choice for his Homespun instructional Norman Blake's Guitar Techniques. It's on the cover of Flatpickin' in the Kitchen (with Tut Taylor) and While Passing Along This Way (with Nancy Blake). He also played it on Whiskey Before Breakfast (though it was not on the album cover).

One of the best Martin’s ever made.
Mr. Smith playing is something my Dad aspired to. Gentle easy picking interspersed with chords just like the picking. Thanks, Kenny
The Guitar. And the Player. And the Guitar.

Many years ago I saw Mark O'Connor live at a little place called Rockefeller's in Houston. Almost everything he played that night was as fast as greased lightning. He did play a couple of old Civil War era tunes, and they were beautiful. Yes, O'Connor is exceedingly talented, but speed isn't always tasteful. Kenny Smith can light up the strings it's true. But he doesn't exhibit the need to impress, and so his playing is sublime indeed.
Kenny Smith's Guitar picking is always awsome, slow or fast picking, cristal clear and great
Lordy. That's a magical sounding D-18.
What a beautiful rendition of Coleman’s March.

Was wondering if this had a name. Thanks!
That looks and sounds the way this guitar should be played!! Right on!!
Maybe it’s my reverence for Norman, but at the price they’re asking it breaks my heart to realize it’ll probably end up in the hands of a collector. A guitar like this with its history I wish would end up in the hands of a player who would cherish it and carry on Norman’s legacy. Norman’s D-28 is listed at 400K. Sorry guys, I understand value but it feels so wrong.

This guitar is alive! Amazing tone and beautiful playing.
Beautiful music! Kenny pulled the sweetest tones from the guitar. Enjoyed it very much.
That is one beautifully done piece, bring tears to a glass eye.
Just learned this tune from watching this(alot) and its such a beautiful little piece to play. Obviously not as beautiful as Kenny plays it, his subtleties and clean playing is just so awesome!
Such a nice rich balance sound no wonder it's a favorite
One of my favorite sounding guitars
I really love Kenny's fluent style. It sounds so easy, yet it's so hard to play like that.
Gorgeous. Thank you.
Well-played!
Kenny is my favorite!
Mr. Blake had some stellar guitars.
A fine guitar, nicely recorded, and the touch of a master's hand. Great music. I hope when this sells, someone will leak the selling price.

You can find a standard no-name Pre- war D-18 runs $15-20.
Norman sure had some fine instruments
Twin Ear Trumpets make this recording stereo supremacy. I love the styling of these mics. Fantastic guitar. I am currently looking for a 50+ year old D-18H. Hell, I am always looking for Martins and Gibsons that are 50+ years old!! I just have a bit of Norman Blake thing bugging me lately.... lol. Did I forget to mention the playing... yeahp, I did... Lovely rendition.
love Kenny's playing

Was the action kind of high on that guitar or was the sound just the way you mic'ed it? Thanx for sharing it with us and merry Christmas.
bravo! 👏🏼
Drop D tuning is the answer. I tried it and it’s my go to chord. Try it, you’ll like it as I do.
This should go to a artist voted by music fans sounds very complex you can hear each string amazing

@@PaulMcCaffreyfmac There are 600 Stradivarius violins in the world. They were all made centuries ago. There's one in a museum which has never been played. People yet to be born will one day be able to see (and maybe hold) the unplayed Stradivarius as it looked fresh from the hands of the maker. What a thrill! The other 599 are played and treasured also.

@@pascalmettey7858 You should read 'Stradivarius' by Toby Faber. It's the life story of a handful of instruments including 'the messiah' which I have seen and photographed in The Ashmoleon. I does indeed look gorgeous but there is no real way of knowing how good an instrument it is until a maestro plays it. Musical Instruments are just artefacts or ornaments until a human being brings the music out of them.
Sounds better mic'd of course..
I want to know why ANYONE down voted this??!!!
Funny, this guitar doesn’t sound much like how I perceive a modern day Martin to sound. Much closer to a Lowden to my ears, the clarity and note separation is reminiscent of a Celtic guitar. And that is no bad thing. Just interesting.
@mbsnyderc
4 жыл бұрын
it's not modern it was made in 1934.
@chrisjs6123
4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that. My point is that it sounds less like a modern Martin and more like a Lowden or Fylde. Just an observation really- people pay so much for these searching for an ultimate “Martin tone” which is to my ears more akin to a European/ Celtic sound. I’d love to compare them side by side.
@jbilly24
4 жыл бұрын
Lol. That “martin tone” belongs to Martin, not lowden or any other. Why? Simple. It pre-dates any of those. So actually a lowden sounds like a prewar Martin to your ears?
$250,000 is not even remotely realistic. Carter's is a fine establishment, but this really is a silly thing to list at this price.
@curtislynch8189
4 жыл бұрын
Why? Somebody paid more than a mil for Hendrix’s Woodstock strat. Somebody paid close to a mil for Clapton’s blackie strat, and it was spare parts. 1959 Les Pauls with no historical provenance go for about the same amount as the asking price for this Martin. I’m sure if they put it up for auction in a room full of rich drunk egomaniacs it would probably get what they are asking if not more.
