The best VPN must have the best security and privacy - this is just a fact. And since encryption is the driving force of VPN security, all four VPNs do their due diligence to encrypt your connection. Whether it’s with the AES (ay ee es)-256 algorithm, or ChaCha20 depends only on the protocol you choose, but regardless of your choice, both algorithms are considered secure and borderline unbreakable.
So no third party can access your data, and the VPNs themselves are not supposed to. I’m not trusting word of mouth on this one: each provider has a no-logs policy here, and Surfshark with NordVPN just had a new audit for theirs last year. Same can be said about ExpressVPN that got an audit last year as well, covering the privacy issues from the acquisition by Kape Technologies, which is still infamous for malware involvement. On Mullvad’s side, not only is its no-logs policy audited, but last year Swedish police raided their offices, allegedly looking for some data… And found nothing.
If you are wondering: “Why SWEDISH police?” Well, that’s because Mullvad VPN is based in Sweden, which is not the best location for a VPN since this country belongs to the 9-eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. The same can be said comparing Mullvad VS Surfshark: the latter’s jurisdiction is in the Netherlands, another 9-eyes county. In that regard, ExpressVPN and NordVPN have it better, with the privacy-friendly British Virgin Islands and Panama jurisdictions respectively.

And talking about convenience, a good VPN pretty much has to have a lot of servers, otherwise, overcrowding and lack of locations will eventually result in poor connectivity. In that regard, NordVPN tops the charts with over 6,000 servers in sixty (inflect) ONE country. Yeah, just recently, NordVPN introduced virtual servers for India.
Comparing NORDVPN VS SURFSHARK, the latter might have fewer servers, but it covers 100 different countries, which used to be the absolute most until recently. Only because ExpressVPN has overtaken Surfshark with 105 countries in total. On the other hand, ExpressVPN also hides its server count for over a year now, so it’s impossible to tell how many servers it offers. But since it used to have over 3000 servers before hiding the count, let’s keep this as a possible minimum.
Finally, Mullvad is the least impressive VPN in that regard. It only has about 650 servers in 40 countries, much less than the competition. Well, since Mullvad uses the WireGuard protocol, its performance is not half bad, despite the low server count. But, ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark are each equipped with a modern protocol as well. So in terms of speed, MULLVAD comes last again, with NordVPN and Surfshark topping the competition.
