Nordjevel interview - new winds of Norwegian black metal

Музыка

Nordjevel is one of the better Norwegian black metal bands of 2000's. In this interview conducted at Inferno festival 2023 we have Doedsadmiral and Dominator (well, partly anyway) for some talk about black metal and beyond.

    I've listened to their last two albums and added Necrogenesis to my collection. I thought it was a great sounding album but I couldn't find the lyrics printed or posted anywhere. Gnavhol and the earlier self-titled are top-tier efforts as well. A very insightful interview by the way with these articulate and relaxed guys.

    Since I'm a bit older than both of these guys I feel like I have the right to protest to their definition of Black Metal. It's not necessarily satanic, but surely, as Dödsamiral said, being opposed (to the establishment, humans etc.). Burzum satanic? Not at all, intitially just as a punk contrarian thing. Ildjarn satanic? No. Isvind? No. Judas Iscariot? No, and the list goes on among the most important bands. Black metal is/was more complex than that. The romanticism, mysticism & opposition are pivotal no matter if it's satanic or not. Satanism is just vainly driven urban unwisdom to me; it is too attached to this world, simply put. Sure, satanists would argue that It's the other way around, but it's their loss, their sorrow. I feel like the black metal I know & grew up with was more otherwordly aspiring than every other metal based genre. With that said, hail the 90s - the only real black metal era. What we have now is just metal with black metal riffs.

  • @RautaMetal

    @RautaMetal

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, yes you're right BUT we should also understand that satanic can also mean as "rebellious" like anti-establishment etc. so not just limited to opposing Christianity. So I kind of agree with you and at the same time not really. It would also be easy to call a lot of 90's bm bands "teenagers sandbox" because in a way that's kind of factual too, with most Norsk bands. More passionate? Sure! More arrogant? Definitely. More intelligent? No, not really. So, pros and cons. It's easy to go on the nostalgia road and just close our eyes from the facts. :)

    @@necroman2754 There's different kinds of Satanism. Satanism isn't even a "unified countermovement/religion". There's theistic Satanism, laveyan Satanism, etc etc. What they have in common? Not much really, apart from using Satan in its name.

    To be fair, Nils' abilities as a drummer are the result of his absolute regimen. As a hyperactive person myself, I find it a hindering attribute towards anything that requires growth from repteated diminishing returns. Instead he seems very composed when it comes to drums and say, rhythmic arrangements. I certainly agree it might come off as such but personally don't see (or hear) it. Also high praises on drinking apple cider with a straw. Also thanks to Jerry for these interviews on the channel. "That's a great question" actually have some substance.
