It’s been a while since I’ve last flown economy class on the Delta Air Lines 767-400. Last time, the seats felt old and crusty. The video screens were small. And the food wasn’t all that great.
The good news is that the interiors of the Delta 767-400 have been updated since then, and most of what I didn’t like about it has been fixed. Except for the food. I’m thinking that maybe that got worse.
I had seat 52G, the aircraft registration was N843MH, and the flight time to San Diego was 5 hours and 50 minutes.

I purposely seek out wide body aircraft for my flights, even when the travel times aren’t exactly ideal. They just have some advantages over the single aisle aircraft, I however have not opted to sit so far in the rear of one like you did. Usually the front or no further than the middle. Awesome vid!

I'd like to try that sometime. I just flew a Delta 767-300 from Anchorage to Atlanta and didn't care for it. Slightly less space than the A321 economy seat to get from Atlanta to Boston. I enjoyed the Hawaiian A330 more from Boston to Honolulu, but that plane was 1/3 full. That helped a ton on that 11.5 hour flight over the 6.5 hour red-eye. I seem to always much prefer Airbus planes to Boeing. Althought, the Recaro designed seats on the Alaska 737 from Honolulu to Anchorage were very well designed. Gives a bit more knee room than the typical seat. Still hate the width of 737 seats, tho.

In terms of boarding/deplane, I have actually found it to be much faster on widebodies than on narrowbodies, despite having more people. Flew DL's former 777 (before they were renovated) from LAX to ATL 2 days before Christmas and I was in the 3rd to last row on an oversold flight. I probably got off the plane faster than most 737/A321/757 flights when I've been in the back. Splitting people across 2 aisles really does help, even if there's only 1 jet bridge. Heck, I've boarded and deplaned A380s faster than most 737s!

@@sanspotter My guess is it will still be a bit more (despite my initial observations), but perhaps the amount time to board per passenger goes way down! Also, it likely helps there's more bin space too (and the bins are bigger, meaning bags can be stored on their narrow side, which sometimes isn't an option on narrowbodies).

Thanks, Scott. Another solid report. I'd always choose the 767 over the 737 for two main reasons. Firstly because it's more spacious. I'm not a claustrophobe, but after 30+ years of solid flying I feel increasingly that the 737 is cramped compared to the a320 and of course, widebodies (no I'm not fat. I'm as skinny as you are). Secondly, I think the 767 will be the next aircraft type to start making an exit from the industry, following in the footsteps of the 747 and a340. With that probable trend in mind, I'm appreciating those 767 flights even more now.

@@sanspotter What!?!? Couldn't find another 76-4 to take back to New York and checked every day for about a week. (It was all 757s) Hopefully they're bringing the service back on this route tho. I think the 76-4 with Delta 1 for transcon is the best seat in domestic travel (save those rare occasions when an A350 is repositioning or something).

Not sure why you would choose to sit in the back of a large aircraft like that. DL's 767 service was a savior for me to get between MCO and ATL during the pandemic. So much more spacious than an equivalently sized 757 or large 767, faster load and unload due to twin aisle, and better service. One time, I even had that internationally configured 764 for my short 1 hour flight and it was awesome! It's a shame the 767 is being retired around the world.

Except in economy, there hasn't been full meal services on trans cons for years, heck, you can do EWR - HNL on UA and not get a meal, though you will on HA, people want to pay nothing for tickets, so they get nothing.

@@lvthud , totally get what you saying, but honestly, if a legacy carrier offered a decent meal on each way, that wouldn't cost more than $30 - $40. Most people don't fly often, so why not live a little when you're already paying hundreds of dollars? Great catering is a smart way to offer a unique selling proposition without breaking the bank.

@@lrg3834 Here is the problem, Delta's cost per mile per passenger averages out at 14.67 cents, it's revenue is 15.35 cents per mile, so Delta's profit per mile per passenger is 0.68 cents per mile, that's 2/3 of a cent, not 68 cents. So total profit per passenger averaged out on this flight at $16.63 per passenger, or to put it a different way, with your meal plan you lose $13.37 per passenger or $3289 for the flight, still think it's a good idea to give away a $30 meal ?

@@lvthud , never said to keep the fares unchanged. Charge more accordingly. Do you go to a restaurant strictly on price? If a roundtrip, trans-continental excursion fare is say, $600, raise it to $630 - $640 to cover the lower cost meal. People will pay a little more if they can see value.
