what's missing? TMPE and removing intersections. You can see the cars stopping at each merge, even though there is no possibility of anything interrupting the merge. Another thing to do is to change the merge from 2+1 to 1+1, so the roundabout goes from 2 lanes, splits to 1 lane after you can exit, then goes back to 2 lanes. Helps with the merging.

I also had that problem and now the traffic flows very nice. In the TMPE main menu select the intersection rules, then select the node you want to edit. In the Node Menu, select an icon which is composed by a car in the front, and another which is like approaching to this one. That will make the cars not stopping at every intersection. I tried not allowing the pedestrian to cross and it didn't work, as well, the priority signs didn't work also.

Using mods doesn't make you a hacker and your best version still doesn't have good traffic flow.

Me: over 1050 hours of Cities:Skylines. Only Grids (almost no roundabout)! But very good traffic flow due to a good network of highways and arterial roads.

@@pixoontube2912 That's because roundabouts have pretty garbage flow compared to a even the most simple of single points. Even the "hacker" roundabout had a ton of cars just sitting around.

I'd optimize the last example even more: Build a straight bridge from west to east and a tunnel from north to south. That way ALL express directions can travel the shortest and most direct direction without interfering others.

Good idea. I've done the bridge for my highest traffic direction a few times but never thought to do a tunnel the other direction. But then I also try to avoid roundabouts as much as possible anyway. My biggest city so far only has three total.

Technically the Place Charle de Gaulle (= Rond point de l'Étoile = Arc de Triomphe) isn't a roundabout but a regular intersection as car in the "roundabout" part of it don't have the right of the way like in normal roundabouts but have to follow the classical right priority toward incoming one like any classical intersection.

I wanted to point that out too haha, its so easy to disable pedestrian crossing with TMPE. I'm just wondering if blockimg the pedestrian from crossing will eventually cause you any problems... In any case I use aerial or underground walking paths

I would offer more road options to get around the area, as well as add bridges and tunnels to go straight to the road in front.

Free public transportation + metro+ tolls + encourage biking + bike lanes + train transportation for cargo = no worries ab traffic. No mods needed. Great Roundabout, anyways!

nice, simple and effective roundabout (the "hacked" one"). A wider road in the center does the trick with that traffic jam. A year later, I'm some how in the middle of the three categories. Very interesting roundabaout concept.

The real key to good traffic flow is proper lane and intersection management. The main issue I see in your roundabouts, which exists in all 3 of them is bad lane management, which is going to happen in vanilla C:S as the default behavior always causes traffic to get in each other's way, and bottleneck themselves on a single lane, even when there are empty lanes right beside them they could use. Use TMPE mod to get better lane and intersection tools to manage traffic flow. A roundabout should have the outside lane be for exiting only, inner lanes for continuing around. The roundabout should always have right of way, so all inbound lanes/roads mush yield to the roundabout traffic. Traffic in the roundabout should be set to pass through the intersections without stopping. Do this and the "noob" roundabout will flow better then the "hacker" roundabout. For a very busy roundabout with a lot of traffic crossing over to the opposite side, you can add a bypass lane, but keep the intersection as far back as you reasonably can from the roundabout so it doesn't jam up traffic flow. Good lane management here can also includes reducing the road by 1 lane where the bypass road exits, and adding that lane back where it re-enters. Even in vanilla with no mods, that will force the game to give the desired lane behaviour (curb lane will be for turning only. All other lanes should be set to streight, and where the bypass merges back in, set the lane to force the merging traffic to use the re-introduced lane, so the cars don't get in each other's way with crazy lane switching behaviour. Avoid multi direction lanes at intersections whenever possible, it just confuses the pathfinding AI and bottlenecks all traffic into one lane and they all get in each other's way.

And now try the smallest roundabout thats still made from hacker xD

It can be improved with a two-way tunnel below the roundabout, so you do not have to go through it and get out on the other side quickly.

The "Hacker" one is basically the same as the pro one, it just looks better

The first roundabout is just like the one in the middle of Mexico City.

You forgot the Dutch level where you build a turbo roundabout ;) with of course elevated bike lanes

Whoever decided to plant trees on the left side of roundabout entry is evil

It's actually quite the opposite because there are smart people who solve those traffic problems without mods.

I've come to understand it as someone, who tinkers with things, understands their inner structure and workings and is able to expertly apply this knowledge, allowing them to achieve results that often exceed expectations. There is no limit to the tools that person uses, hackers would often create their own tools - mods in our case - or use ones created by other hackers. Sometimes a hacker would be very much unable to perform anything extraordinary without such tools. What is your definition of a hacker ?

oh yes, that's how Brussels traffic works. You go straight - you go straight through tunnels, no worries. You need to turn - exit right, go into roundabout (with or preferably - without traffic lights). That's the way you do it.

@@artursruseckis4242 Sometimes I do that though usually only for one of the two roads, typically for situations like giving a radial coming into the city centre a bypass to avoid the roundabout where it meets the inner ring road etc. Though I do tend to like building up my maps like little regions with small neighbouring towns and such so when you do that especially with the real time mod the commuter traffic into the city centre from the main highways is very noticeable just like real life pretty much heh.

Nice video! I actually made an experiment in one of my videos in which I test just how many roundabouts can a particular neighborhood sustain. There is a `soft` limit on how many roundabouts are efficient in traffic management. The rest comes down to area/neighborhood size and proper links to the main highway.

You forgot to put the junction control to make the cars don’t stop and keep on going. They’re stopping at the entrance of the roundabout for no reason😂😂

The hacker roundabout can be enhanced further with some small tweaks. A lot of the tiny junctions in and out of the roundabout had lanes set manually for traffic to both directions, yet they still decided to stop here and there. TM:PE allows you to set it so that the cars enter a junction anyway even if they don’t have room to exit it (why reserve space in a junction where no one is going to drive in front of you?) and also the lanes inside the roundabout should be set a bit differently. Don’t allow people to go straight or take a turn from the same lane, this is a very common problem that causes traffic jams in the game. Setting the junction restrictions inside the roundabout would also increase traffic flow a bit. The lanes going out of the roundabout need more work too, like setting the lanes correctly and applying the same junction restrictions.

The only thing that mattered functionally was the use of TM:PE. The noob one could have had the flow of the hacker one easily. Of course, looks matter too.

That was my though too. The best way to go usually is to optimize flow using current infrastructure and if that is too expensive (both in game money as well as player's time) then go for alternatives. In this case original roundabout + TM:PE would very likely be enough. Also the actual difference between 2nd and 3rd roundabout is usage of TM:PE and size of it (last roundabout is bigger in fact).

Right now for a standard suburban neighborhood that is the shape of a AA battery, I'm using small roundabouts in the front corners. A small oval about in the front center and back center. And a medium oval about in the dead center to regulate service vehicles. But for the capital city center or heavy traffic corridors, I'll use the third one shown. And for medium urban flow, or heavy suburban flow I'll use the second one shown. I usually use the first one for small urban flow or small to medium suburban flow.

In both the noob and pro there is no stop sign setup. You can do this even in vanilla using the menu on the left. Setting stop signs for the cars coming into the roundabout and removing them for the cars inside it will increase throughput significantly

One thing recommended doing in this channel is to respond to peoples comments as soon as possible because I saw some people saying one your videos come one I’ve been waiting for you! Otherwise it’s a great channel for cities skylines!!!

This was fun! Don't forget Elektrix's Roundabout Maker mod! It totally rules. Addendum: a "hacker" roundabout is not required in every situation, just those high-volume nightmares where the rest of the road planning hasn't been done properly. ;) Use "highway" roads in the circle so that the average speed is higher and you get fewer pedestrians to start with. After that, use TM:PE to remove lights and institute yields at conflicts. And what's with decorating with those horrid vanilla trees? Yeesh. MrMaison and pdelmo for the win! With a nice statue or monument and Prop Line Tool circles of flowers and a proper fence. 👍 There, I fixed it for ya.

I start with the n00b circles and upgrade as needed. Often, they are fine. I usually prefer to avoid traffic circles if traffic gets bad if possible. I’m not sure I love the slip roads in the hacker one, but maybe it could work a bit smoother.

These isuses could be solved by having better lane management.

The problem isn't with roundabouts, they work well in real life, it's with the coding and implementation of them in the game...

C:S roundabouts works like USA 4-way STOPs. In World where roundabouts are common road constructions: - Simple rule - if you are on roundabout you go first. When you want to go into you wait. - Mid traffic with many possible paths - turbine roundabout - Heavy traffic with many possible paths and - turbine roundabout + traffic lights

noob starts planting trees before the traffic rolls .. nice! :D

Basically what I said is building an intersection in the middle of a roundabout is ridiculous, which is Taiwan government doing... And they banned scooters to enter the intersection due to "danger". If you're interested, check out the plus code of google map(Chinese character should be included) X6X2+22 台南東區 and switch to satellite mode and you'll see

I would have done the hacker roundabout, with extra lanes that went ether underground or overground, to bypass the roundabout so traffic that was just wanting to go straight, would not have to go through the bypass. Even the hacker roundabout has problems and puts needless traffic into the roundabout bottle necking it.

Well using mods can also make the first roundabout have excellent traffic flow. I saw the cars stopping within the circle. Do all these things without using any mod. This would be nice to see if this works. Thank you anyways for sharing this.

you forgot to use TMPE to change prority of roads. I.E making people going on to the roundabout give way and such.

I'd love to see Noob/Pro/Modder builds of a continuous-flow intersection. Those things are total miracle-workers in my city!

Hacker looks pretty but is better served by you know... making a high capacity roundabout.

Lazy roundabout builder uses the roundabout builder mod to build :)

Why would you need hacks for a building game though lol xD

@imperatur which mod are you using to generate and absorb the traffic? (I'm pretty sure he's not using actual residential, commercial & industrial zones...?)

I noticed in the "Hacker" build there were cars that would enter the center roundabout even though they could have used the parkway and avoided it altogether. Probably could have programmed the traffic flow better with TM:PE to make it even more efficient.

0:16 I know someone is gonna r/woosh me but you could build that without any hacks

Your last mistake is not using all of TM:PE's tools. Reduce speed limits going into the junction and keep them reasonably higher going out.

could also increase hacker roundabout by creating a dedicated turning lane in the circle, so cars dont dive from the far left to exit the roundabout. also, let traffic enter the intersection after they exit, as they are stopping at a stop sign or something...

I usually add park fences between round abouts for more decoration and real look

still looks like you could optimize the last one by raising speed limit on the road making them bypass the roundabout. higher speed limit will cause more people to use it.

I wouldnt have trees in the divider for the turn and outbound lanes so cars can see better, people would merge into each other even with two lanes. Id also extend the curb to divide lanes 1 and 2 until after the intersection so all the cars leaving the roundabout and bypassing it can keep moving and forced into the proper lane then have it end after they are filtered into the road and lanes

just realized something about these centralized , what I call "DEAD ZONES" because you can't put anything near the middle or on the side without disrupting the flow. These are honestly perfect places to put fixed amenities such as fire/police/water/power. Im not saying this is ideal in the real world, but in the game, yeah this would make sense. now the question is... how to connect those amenities....

I play and i make Cities Skylines videos on Console. Hm maybe PRO, but i havent mode. This is a challenge for me. (KZread/ Hoxvale City )
