Nonduality, Consciousness, and Ending Suffering - Rupert Spira

Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: bit.ly/new-talks5
Rupert is one of the world’s leading teachers on the nondual understanding of consciousness and its application to improving our everyday quality of life. He gives talks internationally and has written several books, including: Being Myself, The Nature of Consciousness, and You Are The Happiness You Seek. In this conversation, you’ll learn:
- What the nondual understanding is and how it’s at the core of almost every religious or every spiritual tradition
- How understanding this simple idea can transform your felt experience of being in the world; helping you to feel more connected both internally and to everyone and everything in the world around you
- The pitfalls of seeking happiness in external things and why this almost always fails
- The practical implications of nonduality for the individual and society
And more.
You can learn more about Rupert’s work by visiting: www.rupertspira.com.
---
From an early age, Rupert Spira was deeply interested in the nature of reality, beginning to meditate at the age of seventeen and studying the teachings of the classical Advaita Vedanta tradition over the next twenty years. In 1997 he met his teacher, Francis Lucille, who introduced him to the Direct Path teachings of Atmananda Krishna Menon and to Jean Klein and the Tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. More importantly, Francis directly indicated to him the true nature of experience. Rupert lives in the UK and holds regular meetings and retreats in Europe and the US. " I have heard about Lin Chi, a Zen master. As he was sitting one day in his hut someone came to see him. The man who came was angry. He may have been fighting with his wife or with his boss or something - but he was angry. He pushed open the door in anger, he threw down his shoes in anger and then he came, very respectfully, and bowed down to Lin Chi. Lin Chi said, “First go and ask forgiveness from the door and from the shoes.” The man must have looked at Lin Chi very strangely. There were other people also sitting there and they started laughing. Lin Chi said, “Stop!” and then said to the man, “If you don’t do it then leave. I will have nothing to do with you.” The man said, “It will look crazy to ask forgiveness from the shoes and from the door.” Lin Chi said, “It was not crazy when you expressed anger. Will it now be crazy? Everything has a consciousness. So you go, and unless the door forgives you, I am not going to allow you in.” The man felt awkward but he had to go. Later on he became a monk himself and became enlightened. When he became enlightened, he related the whole anecdote and he said, “When I stood before the door, asking forgiveness, I felt awkward, foolish. But then I thought that if Lin Chi says so, there must be something in it. I trusted Lin Chi, so I thought that even if it was foolish do it. In the beginning whatsoever I was saying to the door was just superficial, artificial; but by and by I started to get warm. And Lin Chi was waiting and he said that he would watch. If the door forgave me, only then could I come in; otherwise I had to stay there until I had persuaded the door and the shoes to forgive me. By and by I became warm. I forgot that many people were looking. I forgot about Lin Chi - and then the concern became sincere and real. I started to feel the door and the shoes were changing their mood. And the moment I realized that the door and the shoes had changed and that they are feeling happy, Lin Chi immediately said that I could come. I had been forgiven.” This incident became a transforming phenomenon in his life because for the first time he became aware that everything is really a crystallization of consciousness. If you cannot see it, it is because you are blind. If you cannot hear it, it is because you are deaf. There is nothing the matter with the things around you. Everything is condensed consciousness. The problem is with you - you are not open and sensitive. This technique says, this consciousness exists as each being, and nothing else exists. Live with this notion. Be sensitive to this and wherever you move, move with this mind and this heart - that everything is consciousness and nothing else exists. Sooner or later, the world will change its face. Sooner or later, objects disappear and persons start appearing everywhere. Sooner or later, the whole world will be suddenly illumined and you will know that you were living in a world of dead things just because of your insensitivity. Otherwise everything is alive - not only alive, everything is conscious. Everything deep down is nothing but consciousness. But if you leave it as a theory, if you believe in it as a theory, then nothing will happen. You will have to make it a way of life a style of life - behaving as if everything is conscious. In the beginning it will be an ‘as if’, and you will feel foolish, but if you can persist in your foolishness, and if you can dare to be foolish, soon the world will start revealing its mysteries."

Roy Schoeman a Jewish convert to Catholicism, describes his spiritual insight while walking in nature one morning and says he received the most spectacular grace of his life when from one moment to the next the curtain between earth and heaven disappeared .....`and I found myself knowingly in the presence of God. It was as though the physical world was a painted thin veil over the spiritual world. I was surprised that I could ever have not seen the spiritual world before, because it was so much more real and more concrete and substantial than the physical world that I just couldn't understand how I could ever have been blind to it.' Once conscious, one can never return to the unconscious state. Waking up does not equate to becoming conscious. There truly is no comparison. However, one must become aware in order to realize that more is possible. Rupert Spira found consciousness via Eastern Spirituality. The West's version is very different - it's through psychoanalysis. Yes, Rupert understands the Western approach. I had to reconstruct the Psychoanalytic process to suit my needs. If Rupert took 20 years, I would suggest that it took me 10 years after realizing where my psychological issues began. I'd enjoy meeting and comparing notes with him, because he we definitely speak the same language.

One of the best and most clarifying explanations I have heard. With this I finally understand why Christ could say 'forgive them for they know not what they do'. Even when King Lear is so divorced from John Smith, that killing John Smith becomes 'holy to him - John 16:2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God - even behind all that, John Smith is still present in the other - but, on a spectrum, as far divorced from Self/King Lear, that killing John Smith appears Right / to 'lead to life /to lead to some type of righteousness / fulfilment ' for King Lear.

As a young adult, I struggled with the concept of reality. It seemed that there should only be one. I realized that I did not know my personal reality. That's where I decided to begin. If I could understand my own reality, then I could tackle the other worldly reality. Little did I realize that I could accomplish these two distinct realities. I can only intuitively understand nonduality. I know it exists. Maybe it's too profound for most of us. ❤❤❤

Speaking in religious terms, what is understood by enlightenment or achieving that PEACE and HAPPINESS is a GRACE that is given to us not in a mechanical way after practices, meditations, prayers and desires to achieve it, but I would almost say "miraculously" from above (UNIVERSAL CONSCIOUSNESS). That is why only some people, usually mystics and some people from the East, have achieved that GRACE. The rest of us human beings have to continue to desire it and investigate it and be lucky enough to receive that GRACE at some point in our existence.

I suffer from unbearable accesses in my ear canals, leaning into the pain psychologically does help, it does require a lot of focus and attention which is limited. I can do it but maintaining that state for a long period of time is difficult.

How can there be a reality independent of minds, when all is one. That would feed every thought we can’t be one without it. Every idea and plan is doomed,in its path in the midst of all it doubted in the making of the plan. A separation of one, because every path is yours to you. Awareness makes you feel better a in knowing, and doesn’t need your proving in your doubt ,in your mind.

@@user-px4mp6lz3o I'm sorry, I don't quite understand your response. On my laptop, YT's screen was doing some odd changing about in size for a while and at one point the 3 little dots at the top right, under the video, had disappeared. But that seems to have stopped happening now and the 3 dots are back. Click on those, then 'Save' and 'Watch later'. I don't know anything about sharing it., but the 'Share' tab is next along, to the left of the 3 dots. Hope that helps! :-)

Very good, But I would add that "everything we know" is perceived through the functions of consciousness, thinking, feeling, sensing, and intuition, and the modes of perception, which are perception itself and judgement, aka discriminating consciousness. The modes of perception are at first like wearing orange ski goggles. We think what we are perceiving is "what is". The modes of perception are clouded and distorted by the wounds, complexes, and repressed instincts, emotions, and feelings, of the subtle body-mind. This distortion is further obscured by the false identifications of the ego. The ego goes through hell as it develops in life. We are told by a teacher or by abusive parents that we are "worthless" and the young developing ego identifies with being "worthless" and "unlovable". Nature/Being gave us a natural process called "spiritual awakening" and this process first purges and purifies the modes of perception and clears and heals the subtle body of the wounds, repressed energies, complexes, false identities, and etc. This process brings one from being a contracted, wounded, separate self sense ego to a unified Cosmic Soul Being. This is the first realization/actualization. Then the Soul discovers its non dual Oneness with Being itself. This does not negate the unique such-ness and Individuality of the Soul Person but enhances it and integrates it with Being Itself. One cannot bypass the painful Soul work. It is built into the fabric of our psyches and Reality itself. Non-dual does not negate Individuals, it heals them, expands them, and integrates them into the Wholeness of Being Itself. Until one achieves Soul Realization, which takes lifetimes, one cannot even begin to grasp non duality. But this teacher Rupert explains it very well and with clarity. Excellent!

I want to confirm what you are saying here. Unfortunately, for centuries, the egoic self has taken such a bad rap . And too much spirituality is about the "spiritual bypass" or "Peter Pan" spirituality. Thank you for recognizing that the ego goes through hell and that soul healing is a necessary process on the path. Over the years, I have found that being a "horse whisperer" to my own wounded psyche has helped me relax enough to experience non-dual states.

~ Creation Creation demands suffering, Suffering is the cost of creation. Suffering seems to be glorious then eh? Hmm, maybe seen in clear lenses. Would you trade this dream for nothing? I didn't choose to be here! No, but now we all have to deal with you eh? Futility comes to mind, except suffering isn't futile. Life is suffering you say? Who are you? I'm awareness. I'm consciousness. I'm, I'm...... Almost there. Almost nowhere. How am I not here, and yet unfathomable here? What am I? Poor soul. Don't you know? You've always been. If a flower could only speak. What would a flower say? Feel a pedal. Know thyself. Soft isn't it? Light, free and perfection in wholeness.

No what a bouts in one, just another adjustment on accepting you are already one with any differences and just need to retire your defenses.
